Antidiarrheal activity of a novel sulfated polysaccharide from the red seaweed Gracilaria cervicornis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The use of marine seaweeds as a source of natural compounds with medicinal purposes is increasing in Western countries in the last decades, becoming an important alternative in the traditional medicine of many developing countries, where diarrhea still remains a severe public health problem, with high rates of mortality and morbidity. Sulfated polysaccharides (PLS) extracted from red seaweeds can exhibit therapeutic effects for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. Thus, the pharmacological properties of the PLS from Gracilaria cervicornis, an endemic sea

[Biologically active agents of potential trade brown seaweed of the Far East Region].

The content of biologically active substances of various classes in potentially trade brown seaweed of the Far East region of Costaria costata and Undaria pinnatifida has been defined. It has been found that the studied brown seaweed of C. costata and U. pinnatifida have lower content of alginic acid, than Laminaria japonica (24.5-27.2% against 38.1%), but rather high to consider them as perspective potential sources for industrial production of alginic acid and alginates. The content of polysaccharides in U. pinnatifida (4.89±0.22%) 8 fold exceeded the level in C. costata that speaks about hi

Socioeconomic potential of seaweed aquaculture in the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam: An integrative review.

Seaweed aquaculture is increasingly promoted within blue economy strategies, but evidence for the Mekong River Delta (MRD), Vietnam, remains fragmented. This PRISMA-informed narrative integrative review screened 460 records after duplicate removal and retained 85 evidence sources. The synthesis compared species suitability, farming systems, value chains, economic evidence, and governance constraints. Gracilaria tenuistipitata had the strongest support for brackish shrimp-pond integration; MRD studies reported standing biomass of 2.13-11.78 t fresh weight ha-1 and associations with higher shrim

Not All Children Are the Same: Differences in the Microbiome Assembly During Early Development of Seaweeds.

Microbial symbionts play key roles in macroalgal development, yet the processes structuring early-life microbiomes remain poorly understood. Using laboratory outgrowth experiments and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing we compared microbiome acquisition and assembly during the early development of three distinct macroalgae: Ulva australis (Chlorophyta), Hormosira banksii (Phaeophyceae) and Delisea pulchra (Rhodophyta). All species established distinct bacterial communities within the first week of outgrowth, with significant shifts in community composition and structure associated with major de

Biocompatibility and structural insights of seaweed-derived cellulose scaffolds in a subcutaneous implantation model.

Sustainable biomaterials are essential for advancing tissue engineering. This study investigates the in vivo biocompatibility and regenerative potential of seaweed cellulose (SC) scaffolds derived from Ulva sp. and Cladophora sp. as connective support matrices. SC scaffolds were fabricated using an optimized decellularization process that preserved their distinct porous (Ulva) and fibrous (Cladophora) architectures. Subcutaneous implantation in Sprague-Dawley rats demonstrated minimal foreign body response and successful integration over an eight-week period. Histological analysis revealed arc

Insights into the in vitro biological properties of Australian beach-cast brown seaweed phenolics.

Five Australian seaweed species, Phyllosphora comosa, Ecklonia radiata, Durvillaea potatorum, Sargassum fallax, and Cystophora siliquosa, thrive along the country's shorelines. Some of these seaweeds have recognized health benefits but have not been fully investigated in terms of their bioactive components and mechanisms of action. We employed ultrasonication with 70% methanol to extract phenolic compounds from these seaweeds and investigated a range of bioactivities for these extracts, including anti-inflammatory activity exploring urease inhibition, nitric oxide scavenging activity, protein

Cytoprotective effect of seaweeds with high antioxidant activity from the Peniche coast (Portugal).

Screening of antioxidant potential of dichloromethane and methanolic extracts of twenty-seven seaweeds from the Peniche coast was performed by: total phenolic contents (TPC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). Seaweeds revealing the highest antioxidant activity were screened for cytoprotective potential in MCF-7 cells, including the mitochondrial membrane potential analysis and the caspase-9 activity. High correlation was found between TPC of seaweed extracts and their scavenging capacity on DPPH and peroxyl radicals.

Effect of fiber-rich brown seaweeds on protein bioavailability of casein in growing rats.

The effect of three subtropical fiber-rich brown seaweeds, Sargassum hemiphyllum (Turn.) C. Ag., Sargassum henslowianum C. Ag. and Sargassum patens Ag., on protein bioavailability of casein were evaluated by growing rats. The effect of the fiber-rich seaweeds was determined by comparing the net protein ratio (NPR), true protein digestibility (TD), nitrogen balance (NB), biological value (BV), net protein utilization (NPU), and fecal and urinary nitrogen loss of seaweed-based diet groups with those of the cellulose-based control group. There were no significant differences on NPR and urinary N

Transient neonatal hypothyroidism due to maternal seaweed soup ingestion: a report of 3 cases.

Seaweed soup (miyeok-guk) is traditionally consumed daily by Korean women during pregnancy and postpartum, often resulting in maternal iodine intake exceeding 2000 µg/day, which can induce neonatal hypothyroidism (NH) in breastfed infants. Neonatal hypothyroidism refers to transient thyroid dysfunction from extrinsic iodine exposure, distinct from congenital hypothyroidism (CH) due to intrinsic thyroid defects. We present 3 infants of Korean descent with NH associated with maternal seaweed soup consumption. Case 1 is a preterm infant with severe hypothyroidism resolving rapidly after maternal

Evaluation of Porcine Gastric Mucin-Based Method for Extraction of Noroviruses from Seaweed Salad.

Human noroviruses (HuNov) are the major cause of foodborne illness globally. Several HuNoV outbreaks have been linked to contaminated ready-to-eat seaweed products. Standard protocols such as the ISO 15216 show limited efficiency in extracting foodborne viruses from seaweed products. Therefore, we evaluated the efficiency of an extraction protocol based on porcine gastric mucin conjugated magnetic beads (PGM-MBs) to recover HuNoVs from Wakame seaweed salad. Compared to other HuNoV extraction methods, the PGM-MB method was more efficient. We then aimed to further improve this protocol by modify

Enhanced porcine gut barrier functioning and reduced inflammation from a combination of seaweed  bioactives.

BACKGROUND: Microbial and toxin-related challenges are well-documented causes of impaired animal performance. The gastro-intestinal tract is the single largest organ that interfaces with numerous challenges including pathogenic organisms, toxins and other immune activating stimuli. The integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier is the first and most critical line of defence. There are a number of reports demonstrating the potential of naturally derived feed additives to mitigate the damage derived from toxin or infectious agents on cell culture barrier integrity models but little information

pH-Dependent Extraction of Antioxidant Peptides from Red Seaweed Palmaria palmata: A Sequential Approach.

This study employed a diverse approach to extract antioxidant peptides from red seaweed Palmaria palmata, recognized for its comparatively high protein content. Initially, an aqueous extraction of the entire seaweed was performed, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of the solid residues prepared from the first step. The effects of three different pH levels (3, 6, and 9) during the aqueous extraction were also examined. Results indicated that the solid fraction from the sequential extraction process contained significantly higher levels of proteins and amino acids than other fractions (p < 0.05).
