An updated review of the sebaceous gland and its role in health and diseases Part 2: Pathophysiological clinical disorders of sebaceous glands.

Sebaceous glands are sebum-secreting components of pilosebaceous units. In the second of this two-part series, we review the pathologies in which sebaceous glands are primarily and secondarily implicated. They are primarily involved in steatocystoma simplex and multiplex, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, sebaceoma, sebaceous adenoma, sebaceous carcinoma, nevus sebaceus, and folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma. Sebaceous glands are secondarily involved in acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, and androgenic alopecia. Steatocystoma multiplex is a benign congenital anomaly presenting as yellow cysts

ETV6::NTRK3-associated papillary adenocarcinoma: let us play it by ear.

Ceruminous glands are modified apocrine glands, situated in the external auditory canal (EAC) that, together with sebaceous glands, produce cerumen. The neoplastic transformation of these structures is exceedingly rare. We encounter two cases of EAC adenocarcinoma with ETV6::NTRK3 fusion. Despite this genetic overlap, the morphology and immunophenotype delineate its clear separation from secretory carcinoma. These cases demonstrate novel primary EAC adenocarcinoma with papillary morphology, which expands the ever-increasing list of ETV6::NTRK3-positive malignancies and which we would like to t

Benign cutaneous adnexal tumors with combined folliculosebaceous, apocrine, and eccrine differentiation. Clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of eight cases.

Benign cutaneous adnexal tumors displaying divergent differentiation are rare, with very few well-documented cases reported in the literature. We describe eight cases of benign adnexal tumors showing a variable combination of eccrine, apocrine, and folliculosebaceous differentiation. Clinically, all tumors presented as solitary, slowly enlarging dermal or subcutaneous nodules located in the head and neck and the extremities. Histologically, they were characterized by well-circumscribed, unencapsulated nodules composed of a lobular proliferation of epithelial cells displaying a spectrum of tric

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of submandibular gland.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare primary tumour of the salivary gland, benign in nature arising from differentiated Sebaceous glands and cells in the salivary gland. Most of the tumours are seen in the parotid gland and very rarely in the submandibular gland. Herein a case of sebaceous lymphadenoma is reported in a 45 years old female with a swelling in the submandibular region. Histopathological study after surgical excision showed islands of sebaceous epithelial cells with dense collections of lymphoid cells in stroma and a diagnosis of sebaceous lymphadenoma of submandibular gland was made.

Novel labial adnexal sebaceous basaloid proliferation associated with sebaceous epitheliomas and adenocarcinomas in Labrador retrievers.

A distinctive peritumoral epithelial proliferation was identified exclusively in the labial region of Labrador retrievers in association with sebaceous neoplasms. To characterize this lesion, 515 sebaceous neoplasms diagnosed in dogs of different breeds between 2017 and 2025 were retrospectively reviewed. Among these, 2 of 255 epitheliomas (0.7%) and 22 of 41 adenocarcinomas (54%) arising in the lips exhibited a distinctive peripheral basaloid epithelial proliferation. The lesion was observed only in the lower lip of Labrador retrievers, occurring in association with either solitary or multifo

Molecular pathology of skin adnexal tumours.

AIMS: Tumours of the cutaneous adnexa arise from, or differentiate towards, structures in normal skin such as hair follicles, sweat ducts/glands, sebaceous glands or a combination of these elements. This class of neoplasms includes benign tumours and highly aggressive carcinomas. Adnexal tumours often present as solitary sporadic lesions, but can herald the presence of an inherited tumour syndrome such as Muir-Torre syndrome, Cowden syndrome or CYLD cutaneous syndrome. In contrast to squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, molecular changes in adnexal neoplasia have been poorly chara

Chemotherapy of rare skin adnexal tumors: a review of literature.

Malignant skin adnexal tumors are rare neoplasms which are derived from adnexal epithelial structures of the skin: hair follicle, or sebaceous, apocrine or eccrine glands. Among them, eccrine porocarcinoma is the most frequent, with an aggressive behavior compared to other more common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. Only few reports describe the treatment of metastatic adnexal tumors, and there is no consensus about the better strategy of chemotherapy. Given the few cases and the absence of randomized clinical trials, it is important to collect clinical experiences on these tumors. Most of

Immunohistochemical demonstration of carcinoembryonic antigen and related antigens in various cutaneous keratinous neoplasms and verruca vulgaris.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), which is a well-known marker for the normal sweat gland apparatus and its neoplasms in the skin, was recently demonstrated in sebaceous neoplasms. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of CEA and related antigens in the other cutaneous keratinous neoplasms and verruca vulgaris. Normal adult skin, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), senile keratosis, Bowen's disease, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), seborrhoeic keratosis and verruca vulgaris were stained immunohistochemically with a panel of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies that recognize different epitop

Establishment and Characterization of a Novel Human Ocular Adnexal Sebaceous Carcinoma Cell Line.

PURPOSE: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a malignant eyelid tumor of the ocular adnexa that is primarily treated via surgical excision. Few therapies exist in advanced cases, and medical therapy is limited because of our incomplete understanding of SC biology. Herein, we describe a technique to culture human ocular adnexal SC for use as an in vitro model. METHODS: Human ocular adnexal SC tumor cells were isolated from a patient undergoing orbital exenteration surgery and named Bascom Palmer 50 (BP50). They were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium/nutrient mixture F-12 supplemented with 1

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of eyelid: A usual tumor at an unusual site.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm comprising mucous, intermediate and epidermoid cells, arising mainly in salivary gland. It is extremely uncommon in ocular region, where it can arise in conjunctiva, lacrimal gland or lacrimal sac. The index case is being presented for its rarity and for highlighting the importance of meticulous sampling for correct diagnosis. A 68-year-old female presented with complaints of ulceration over right lower eyelid for 3 years. She underwent a local surgical excision 2 years ago after which she was asymptomatic for the following 1 year. Hi

Case report: A rare case of oral sebaceous carcinoma in the upper lip.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare aggressive malignant tumor that originates in the adnexal epithelium of the sebaceous gland. While occurrences on the lips are extremely uncommon, there have been a few reported cases in the literature. Our case involves a 47-year-old smoker male who presented with a painless, non-mobile lesion on his upper lip that had been present for 12 months. Upon clinical examination, an ulcerated, exophytic, and irregularly shaped mass was observed on the upper lip. No other intraoral lesions were found. An incisional biopsy was performed, revealing a malignant tumor w
