BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition caused by repetitive abutment of a morphologically abnormal proximal femur and/or acetabulum that may result in chondral and labral pathology. An understanding of radiographic parameters associated with successful primary surgery has not been well established.
PURPOSE: To determine preoperative radiographic parameters that predict reoperation for FAI and correlate radiographic measurements with outcomes in these patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A prospectively collected institutional regi

Second-look laparotomy is one of the mainstays of surgical treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI). The aim of this study was to analyze its role in the survival of patients with infarcted gangrenous bowel resulting from AMI. A retrospective chart review of all patients admitted over the study period was undertaken. The study population consisted of 41 patients with clinical evidence of peritonitis and gangrenous, perforated bowel on surgical exploration. Outcome was compared among patients who underwent second-look laparotomy and those who did not. Fifteen patients with an American Socie

Early postoperative intestinal obstruction is most successfully treated with intestinal intubation with a long intestinal tube of the Miller-Abbott, Harris or Cantor type, and only when this fails is reoperation indicated. However, late postoperative intestinal obstruction is better treated by operation as soon as the diagnosis is established and the patient is prepared for the procedure. Decompression of the bowel at the time of operation has become a procedure of choice and it is now possible to completely decompress the bowel in the course of the operation using a Foley catheter inserted th

Single-incisional laparoscopic surgery (SILS) has emerged as an attempt to further enhance the cosmetic benefits and reduce the morbidity of minimally invasive surgery. We present an approach of SILS adhesiolysis to adhesive strangulated ileus. A 70-year-old female patient, who had undergone laparoscopic low anterior resection 6 years before, underwent SILS adhesiolysis to a midline surgical incision wound adhesion site. The surgery was performed with only a 2.5-cm left-side transrectus incision using the SILS port. Laparoscopy revealed intestinal torsion and congestion with adhesion of the il

A study was designed to determine the efficacy of second-look laparoscopy adhesiolysis in preventing adhesion recurrence seven days after conservative microsurgical reconstructive surgery on the uterotuboovarian complex. Third-look laparoscopy was used to evaluate the second-look laparoscopy adhesiolysis 6-18 months later. It indicated that second-look laparoscopy adhesiolysis was beneficial in preventing adhesion recurrence.

PURPOSE: We reviewed the natural history of residual fragments after percutaneous nephrostolithotomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 1999 to January 2007 a total of 728 patients underwent percutaneous nephrostolithotomy at our medical center including 527 with a minimum documented radiographic followup of 6 months. Of these patients 42 (8%) with residual fragments on postoperative computerized tomography were observed rather than subjected to second look flexible nephroscopy. Computerized tomography was reviewed to define location, size and number of residual fragments. The primary study e
