Behavioral Markers in Older Adults During COVID-19 Confinement: Secondary Analysis of In-Home Sensor Data.

BACKGROUND: Older adults were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a high number of deaths occurring in this age group. The impact of social isolation and home confinement continues to impact the mental and emotional health of older adults, despite the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, including physical and social inactivity, and poor sleep quality, have been reported. Recommendations for healthy lifestyle changes have primarily targeted the general population, highlighting the need for personalized recommendations for vulnerable older adults.

Quality of Life of People Living With Dementia Residing in Nursing Homes: Secondary Analysis of Observational Data.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) plays a crucial role in dementia care; however, QoL and its dynamic, context-dependent nature can be difficult to capture among people living with dementia due to challenges in memory and communication, and limitations of self-reported QoL instruments. Observational tools such as the Maastricht Electronic Daily Life Observation (MEDLO) provide narrative descriptions of the daily life of people living with dementia in nursing homes. However, the MEDLO tool was not developed to assess QoL specifically, and it remains unclear to what extent its narrative descript

[Comparison of the nutritional status of residents in shared-housing arrangements and nursing homes: a secondary data analysis].

Malnutrition and weight loss are special challenges in the care of older people particularly with dementia. In Germany, shared-housing arrangements (SHA) for older care-dependent people evolved in the last years. SHA are an alternative to traditional nursing homes. Despite of the increase of SHA in number it remains unclear if this setting is especially beneficial in terms of (mal-)nutrition. Therefore the nutritional status of older people with and without dementia living in SHA and traditional nursing homes will be compared. From 2010 to 2011 data was collected in various SHA in Berlin and i

[Use of cinacalcet in clinical practice for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism: analysis of the Italian data of the ECHO study].

Several studies have shown that, compared with standard therapy, cinacalcet reduces parathyroid hormone (PTH) as well as calcium and phosphorus levels in dialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). The ECHO study evaluated cinacalcet use in actual clinical practice. ECHO enrolled 1865 patients treated with cinacalcet at 187 sites in 12 European countries. In Italy 263 patients were enrolled at 20 sites. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate K/DOQI target achievement in SHPT dialysis patients after the introduction of cinacalcet. Patients on cinacalcet treatment be

Neighbourhood socioeconomic context and self reported health and smoking: a secondary analysis of data on seven cities.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies have shown that poor health status and harmful health behaviour occur more frequently in deprived neighbourhoods. Most studies show modest associations between area level socioeconomic factors, the neighbourhood context, and health outcomes. However, estimates for the contextual effects vary. It is unclear if this variation is attributable to differences in methodology. This study examines whether contextual neighbourhood differences in health outcomes really vary between cities or that differences in methodology may account for these differences. DESIGN: Secondary ana

Life-space mobility trajectory patterns and associated characteristics in older cancer survivors: a secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Life-space mobility (LSM) measures the size of the real-world geographic area an individual purposely transverses in their daily life. While older cancer survivors often have declines in LSM that negatively affects their quality of life, independence, and social engagement the factors that predispose to adverse outcomes are unknown. Understanding different patterns of LSM and its decline can help identify those needing support. The purpose of this study was to identify: (1) LSM trajectory patterns and (2) factors associated with those patterns in older cancer survivors. METHODS: T

Acute myocardial injury secondary to severe acute liver failure: A retrospective analysis supported by animal data.

To investigate whether acute liver failure (ALF) leads to secondary acute myocardial injury, 100 ALF patients that were retrospectively identified in a single center based on ICD 10 codes and 8 rats from an experimental study that died early after bile duct ligation (BDL) were examined. Creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase-MB isoenzyme (CKMB) and cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) were analyzed as markers of myocardial injury. For histological analysis, hematoxylin-eosin (HE), elastic Van Gieson (EVG), CD41 and myeloperoxidase were used to stain rat hearts. Major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) were a

Gut microbiome dynamics and cardiometabolic disease progression: evidence from a secondary data analysis of pooled clinical datasets.

PURPOSE: Individuals with cardiometabolic disease (CMD) often exhibit decreased microbial alpha diversity and/or differences in beta diversity indices than those without CMD. However, it is unclear if these compositional changes in the gut microbiome are a cause or a consequence of CMD. Research suggests individual bacterial species act as drivers of disease, inducing shifts in microbial community and host metabolism. During this process, large-scale compositional changes can develop secondarily, obscuring the original microbial drivers. This study aimed to characterize the gut microbiota of h
