Daily steps offset risks of sedentary behavior in the All of Us research program.

Sedentary behavior is associated with increased mortality and chronic diseases, yet it remains unclear whether higher daily step counts can mitigate these risks. In this study, we analyzed longitudinal sedentary and step data from Fitbit devices in the All of Us Research Program to examine incident diagnoses of chronic conditions. We show that greater sedentary time was associated with higher risk of obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary di

Sedentary behavior and risk of chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior has been considered a particular risk factor for adverse health outcomes independent of exercise, becoming a widespread public health issue globally. Many studies have analyzed the effect of sedentary behavior levels on the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), however, previous findings have been inconsistent. This study aims to evaluate the association between sedentary behavior and the risk of CKD. METHODS: Eleven databases were searched for relevant cohort studies that were published between September 2024 and the databases' inception. To assess the associat

Relationship between sedentary behavior and endothelial dysfunction in a cross-sectional study in China.

UNLABELLED: Sedentary behavior is a risk factor for several diseases, and previous studies have mostly reported the effects of acute sedentary behavior on vascular endothelial function. Data on the relationship between sedentary lifestyle habits and vascular function in large sample populations are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the correlation between self-reported sedentary behavior and peripheral vascular function in a check-up population from real-world data. METHODS: We recruited 13,220 participants from two health management centers of general tertiary hospitals

A Machine Learning Approach for Prediction of Sedentary Behavior Based on Daily Step Counts.

Sedentary behavior is considered as a major public health challenge, linked with many chronic diseases and premature mortality. In this paper, we propose a steps counting -based machine learning approach for the prediction of sedentary behavior. Our work focuses on analyzing historical data from multiple users of wearable physical activity trackers and exploring the performance of four machine learning algorithms, i.e., Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, Convolutional Neural Networks, as well as a Majority Vote Ensemble of the algorithms. To train and test our models we employed a cr

Physical activity, obesity and sedentary behavior in cancer etiology: epidemiologic evidence and biologic mechanisms.

An estimated 30-40% of cancers can be prevented through changes in modifiable lifestyle and environmental risk factors known to be associated with cancer incidence. Despite this knowledge, there remains limited awareness that these associations exist. The purpose of this review article was to summarize the epidemiologic evidence concerning the contribution of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and obesity to cancer etiology and to provide an overview of the biologic mechanisms that may be operative between these factors and cancer incidence. Strong and consistent evidence exists that highe

Exercise-induced epigenetic remodeling in COPD skeletal muscle dysfunction: From sedentary behavior to molecular rehabilitation.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder in which extrapulmonary manifestations substantially contribute to disease burden. Among these, skeletal muscle dysfunction (SMD) represents a major determinant of exercise intolerance, reduced physical activity, impaired quality of life, and mortality. Growing evidence suggests that physical inactivity is not merely a consequence of advanced COPD but may act as an early and potentially modifiable driver of skeletal muscle deterioration, being detectable even in patients with mild disease and pote

Sedentary behavior and physical activity in survivors of childhood hodgkin lymphoma: a cross-cectional study.

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is one of the most common cancers during adolescence. Advances in treatment have achieved survival rates exceeding 90%. However, long-term treatment-related sequelae, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, significantly affect the quality of life of survivors. Physical activity (PA) is considered a key strategy to mitigate these risks. Current studies predominantly rely on subjective assessments of movement behavior, which may lack accuracy. This cross-sectional study aims to use device-based monitoring to characterize levels of sedentary behavior and ph

Associations of objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behavior with sleep quality in college students.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are prevalent in college students and are often exacerbated by academic pressures. Accumulating evidence indicates that physical activity and sedentary behaviors exert divergent effects on sleep quality. This study aimed to investigate the associations of objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behavior with sleep quality in college students. The potential effects of substituting sedentary behavior with physical activity on sleep quality were also examined. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 349 college students (age range: 17-25 years; 57.6

Association of Objectively Measured Sedentary Behavior With Arterial Stiffness: Findings From the Nijmegen Exercise Study.

Sedentary behavior (SB) may affect arterial stiffness, preceding the development of cardiovascular disease. We investigated the association of objectively measured SB with arterial stiffness. We also investigated factors that affected this association. We recruited adult volunteers and measured SB with thigh-worn accelerometery for 24 hrs/day for eight consecutive days. Central (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, cfPWV, gold standard) and local carotid arterial stiffness (stiffness index Beta and pressure-strain elasticity EP) were measured with ultrasound. Sedentary behavior does not predict low BMD nor fracture-population-based Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study.

Sedentary behavior (SB) or sitting is associated with multiple unfavorable health outcomes. Bone tissue responds to imposed gravitational and muscular strain with there being some evidence suggesting a causal link between SB and poor bone health. However, there are no population-based data on the longitudinal relationship between SB, bone change, and incidence of fragility fractures. This study aimed to examine the associations of sitting/SB (defined as daily sitting time), areal BMD (by DXA), and incident low trauma (fragility) osteoporotic fractures (excluding hands, feet, face, and head).
