Genetic selection for health traits using producer-recorded data. I. Incidence rates, heritability estimates, and sire breeding values.

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of genetic selection for health traits in dairy cattle using data recorded in on-farm herd management software programs. Data regarding displaced abomasum (DA), ketosis (KET), mastitis (MAST), lameness (LAME), cystic ovaries (CYST), and metritis (MET) were collected between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2003 in herds using Dairy Comp 305, DHI-Plus, or PCDART herd management software programs. All herds in this study were either participants in the Alta Genetics (Watertown, WI) Advantage progeny testing program or customers of the

Exploring the nutritional riches of pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.): a multivariate approach for selection of nutritionally superior genotypes for breeding programmes.

Pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.) is an underutilized yet nutritionally rich vegetable with significant potential to address micronutrient deficiencies in India. However, limited information is available on the extent of variability in nutritional and antioxidant traits and their interrelationships among diverse pointed gourd genotypes, restricting the identification of nutritionally superior breeding materials. A total of 46 genotypes were evaluated for 15 fruit quality parameters, including total phenols, ascorbic acid, carbohydrates, protein, essential minerals, moisture content, a

Analysis of Selected Eye Disorders in a Group of Predisposed Breeds of Dogs: Molecular Diagnostics of Collie Eye Anomaly and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Two hereditary eye disorders that are frequently observed in Collies and related breeds are Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). The main symptom of CEA is choroidal hypoplasia. It is associated with a 7.8 kb deletion in intron 4 of the NHEJ1 gene located on chromosome CFA7. Rod-cone dysplasia 3 (RCD3), an early-onset form of PRA, is associated with mutations in the PDE6A gene. METHODS: Molecular diagnostic techniques were used in this study to identify genetic mutations linked to CEA and RCD3-type PRA in a subset of dog breeds. Australian Shepherds (n =

The breed prevalence of dog erythrocyte antigen 1.1 in the Onderstepoort area of South Africa and its significance in selection of canine blood donors.

The blood group antigen Dog Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA) 1.1 is clinically the most important canine blood group as DEA 1.1 antibodies are capable of causing acute haemolytic, potentially life-threatening transfusion reactions. Dogs do not have naturally occurring antibodies to DEA 1.1 but are rapidly sensitised by the first incompatible transfusion. The prevalence of DEA 1.1 in the general dog population is estimated at 42-46%. Canine blood donors registered with the Onderstepoort Animal Blood Bank (n = 93) as well as potential donors (n = 140) were typed for DEA 1.1 using a monoclonal antibody

Genetic potential for changes in breeding systems: Predicted and observed trait changes during artificial selection for male and female allocation in a gynodioecious species.

PREMISE: Evolution of separate sexes from hermaphroditism often proceeds through gynodioecy, but genetic constraints on this process are poorly understood. Genetic (co-)variances and between-sex genetic correlations were used to predict evolutionary responses of multiple reproductive traits in a sexually dimorphic gynodioecious species, and predictions were compared with observed responses to artificial selection. METHODS: Schiedea (Caryophyllaceae) is an endemic Hawaiian lineage with hermaphroditic, gynodioecious, subdioecious, and dioecious species. We measured genetic parameters of Schiede

High-density genotyping reveals signatures of selection related to acclimation and economically important traits in 15 local sheep breeds from Russia.

BACKGROUND: Domestication and centuries of selective breeding have changed genomes of sheep breeds to respond to environmental challenges and human needs. The genomes of local breeds, therefore, are valuable sources of genomic variants to be used to understand mechanisms of response to adaptation and artificial selection. As a step toward this we performed a high-density genotyping and comprehensive scans for signatures of selection in the genomes from 15 local sheep breeds reared across Russia. RESULTS: Results demonstrated that the genomes of Russian sheep breeds contain multiple regions un

Development of sub-tropically adapted diverse provitamin-A rich maize inbreds through marker-assisted pedigree selection, their characterization and utilization in hybrid breeding.

Malnutrition has emerged as one of the major health problems worldwide. Traditional yellow maize has low provitamin-A (proA) content and its genetic base in proA biofortification breeding program of subtropics is extremely narrow. To diversify the proA rich germplasm, 10 elite low proA inbreds were crossed with a proA rich donor (HP702-22) having mutant crtRB1 gene. The F2 populations derived from these crosses were genotyped using InDel marker specific to crtRB1. Severe marker segregation distortion was observed. Seventeen crtRB1 inbreds developed through marker-assisted pedigree breeding and

Genetic Analyses of Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] Breeding Traits for Selecting Superior Genotype(s) Using Multivariate and Multi-Traits Indexing Approaches.

Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] is an important food, feed, and cash crop in rice-based agricultural ecosystems in Southeast Asia and other continents. It has the potential to enhance livelihoods due to its palatability, nutritional content, and digestibility. We evaluated 166 diverse mungbean genotypes in two seasons using multivariate and multi-traits index approaches to identify superior genotypes. The total Shannon diversity index (SDI) for qualitative traits ranged from moderate for terminal leaflet shape (0.592) to high for seed colour (1.279). The analysis of variances (ANOVA) ind

Signatures of selection detected from whole-genome sequencing indicate that the small body size in dwarf rabbit breeds is caused by polygenic effects with a few major loci.

Early genetic studies have suggested that body size in rabbits can be considered a quantitative trait. Several rabbit breeds can be distinguished based on body size, including a few dwarf breeds differentiated by other morphological characteristics. While a large deletion in the HMGA2 gene is a major locus associated with dwarfism in Netherland Dwarf rabbits, it may not fully explain the reduced body size in this breed or other dwarf breeds. In this study, we compared the genomes of two dwarf rabbit breeds (Dwarf Lop and Netherland Dwarf) with those of non-dwarf rabbits by analysing whole-geno

Selection signature analyses and genome-wide association reveal genomic hotspot regions that reflect differences between breeds of horse with contrasting risk of degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis.

Degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis is a progressive idiopathic condition that leads to scarring and rupture of suspensory ligament fibers in multiple limbs in horses. The prevalence of degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis is breed related. Risk is high in the Peruvian Horse, whereas pony and draft breeds have low breed risk. Degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis occurs in families of Peruvian Horses, but its genetic architecture has not been definitively determined. We investigated contrasts between breeds with differing risk of degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis and ide

Selection of experimental strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) hybrids based on selection indices.

The strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Dutch.), is the only vegetable belonging to the rosacea family. All strawberry species have now emerged from wild species and belong to the genus Fragaria, being that this genus presents more than 45 described species, and only 11 are considered natural species. Due to the octoploid nature of strawberry and its variability after hybridization, selecting one or more characters may result in unfavorable genotypes and even the exclusion of promising ones, because negative genetic correlations have been observed among them that cause inefficient selection. There

Influence of swine leukocyte antigen haplotype on serum antibody titers against swine erysipelas vaccine and reproductive and meat production traits of SLA-defined selectively bred Duroc pigs.

We investigated possible associations of SLA class II haplotypes with serum antibody titers against a swine erysipelas vaccine, reproductive and meat production traits using a population of selective breeding Duroc pigs. In the selective breeding Duroc pigs, four SLA class II-DRB1 and -DQB1 alleles were assigned by using PCR-sequence specific primer technique. Low-resolution haplotype (Lr)-0.30 and/or Lr-0.13 were deduced from the SLA class II alleles in the population of SLA-defined Duroc pigs. SLA-homozygous piglets with the Lr-0.30 haplotype had relatively lower serum antibody titers agains

Changes in animal performance and profitability of Holstein dairy operations after introduction of crossbreeding with Montbéliarde, Normande, and Scandinavian Red.

An individual-based mechanistic, stochastic, and dynamic simulation model was developed to assess economic effects resulting from changes in performance for milk yield and solid contents, reproduction, health, and replacement, induced by the introduction of crossbreeding in Holstein dairy operations. Three crossbreeding schemes, Holstein × Montbéliarde, Holstein × Montbéliarde × Normande, and Holstein × Montbéliarde × Scandinavian Red, were implemented in Holstein dairy operations and compared with Holstein pure breeding. Sires were selected based on their estimated breeding value for milk. Tw

Balancing gain and diversity: Optimal contribution selection for sustainable genetic improvement in sugarcane.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids), the source of ∼80% of the worlds sugar, has experienced a plateau in genetic improvement over recent decades. This stagnation is largely due to the crop's complex polyploid genome and long breeding cycles, which limit the efficiency of traditional selection methods. Genomic selection (GS) has been proposed to accelerate breeding progress in sugarcane by enabling faster improvement of key commercial traits such as cane yield, sugar content, and disease resistance. However, especially in clonally propagated outbred crops like sugarcane, intensive GS can reduce

Spermatogonial Stem Cell Transplantation: Insights and Outlook for Domestic Animals.

The demand for food will increase to an unprecedented level over the next 30 years owing to human population expansion, thus necessitating an evolution that improves the efficiency of livestock production. Genetic gain to improve production traits of domestic animal populations is most effectively achieved via selective use of gametes from animals deemed to be elite, and this principle has been the basis of selective breeding strategies employed by humans for thousands of years. In modern-day animal agriculture, artificial insemination (AI) has been the staple of selective breeding programs, b

Changes in shape and cross-sectional geometry in the tibia of mice selectively bred for increases in relative bone length.

Limb bone size and shape in terrestrial mammals scales predictably with body mass. Weight-bearing limb bones in these species have geometries that enable them to withstand deformations due to loading, both within and between species. Departures from the expected scaling of bone size and shape to body mass occur in mammals that have become specialized for different types of locomotion. For example, mammals adapted for frequent running and jumping behaviors have hind limb bones that are long in relation to body mass, but with narrower cross-sections than predicted for their length. The Longshank

Should prenatal screening be seen as 'selective reproduction'? Four reasons to reframe the ethical debate.

There are a number of problems with the classification of prenatal screening as a form of 'selective reproduction' that has become an increasingly dominant classification scheme in the last decade. (1) Since the term 'selection' implies choosing one out of several (at least two), it misdescribes the decision to terminate a pregnancy. (2) Deciding whether to have this child is a decision taken within the relationships that constitute the pregnancy. (3) 'Selection' is a loaded term, connecting prenatal diagnosis to negative eugenics or to population genetics. (4) Deciding against the birth of a
