Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have proven efficacy in the treatment of panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. Accumulating data shows that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment can also be efficacious in patients with generalized anxiety disorder. This review summarizes the findings of randomized controlled trials of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, examines the strengths and weaknesses of other therapeutic approaches and considers potential new treatments

Panic disorder: the place of benzodiazepines and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

This article reviews the efficacy of the benzodiazepines and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor class of antidepressant in the treatment of panic disorder. The benzodiazepine alprazolam has been used successfully in the treatment of panic disorder, but its long-term use presents problems with dependence. Since panic may be mediated by a dysfunction of serotonin neuronal pathways, there is a rationale for treatment with antidepressants that modulate serotonergic systems. In clinical trials, members of the SSRI class of antidepressant reduced panic attack frequency to zero in 36-86% of p

Effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on auditory processing: case study.

Auditory sensitivity and processing ability were evaluated in a patient who suffered from hyperacusis, difficulty understanding speech, withdrawn depression, lethargy, and hypersensitivity to touch, pressure, and light. Treatment with fluvoxamine and fluoxetine (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) reversibly alleviated complaints. Testing while medicated and unmedicated (after voluntary withdrawal from medication for several weeks) revealed no difference in pure-tone thresholds, speech thresholds, word recognition scores, tympanograms, or acoustic reflex thresholds. Medicated SCAN-A (a sc

Concomitant use of anxiolytics and hypnotics with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

A retrospective drug utilization analysis was conducted to compare concomitant use of anxiolytics and hypnotics among patients who received selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Data were extracted from an administrative prescription claims database. Patients must have been 18 to 64 years of age, without antidepressant, anxiolytic, or hypnotic use before SSRI therapy initiation, and without the use of antidepressants, other than the original SSRI, after SSRI therapy initiation. The study sample included 117,319 patients. Concomitant anxiolytic use for the total sample was 9.8%. Conc

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors for anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and stress disorders: A 3-level network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and stress-related disorders frequently co-occur, and patients often present symptoms of several domains. Treatment involves the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), but data on comparative efficacy and acceptability are lacking. We aimed to compare the efficacy of SSRIs, SNRIs, and placebo in multiple symptom domains in patients with these diagnoses over the lifespan through a 3-level network meta-analysis. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched for published and unpublished

Distinct Effects of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors on Soluble Biomarkers in Blood and Cerebrospinal Fluid of People With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Persistent inflammation affects people with HIV (PWH) despite antiretroviral therapy (ART). Selective serotonin and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs, SNRIs), HMG-CoA reductase-inhibitors (statins), and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) have immunomodulant properties. We evaluated the potential impact of these drugs on inflammation and neurodegeneration in PWH. METHODS: Cross-sectional single-center (United States) analysis in 184 PWH on ART with plasma HIV RNA < 200 copies/mL. All participants had 10 biomarkers measured in blood and cerebrospinal

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors: New hope in the fight against COVID-19.

The emerging COVID-19 pandemic led to a dramatic increase in global mortality and morbidity rates. As in most infections, fatal complications of coronavirus affliction are triggered by an untrammeled host inflammatory response. Cytokine storms created by high levels of interleukin and other cytokines elucidate the pathology of severe COVID-19. In this respect, repurposing drugs that are already available and might exhibit anti-inflammatory effects have received significant attention. With the in vitro and clinical investigation of several studies on the effect of antidepressants on COVID-19 pr

Can selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have a neuroprotective effect during COVID-19?

The absence of a specific treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection led to an intense global effort in order to find new therapeutic interventions and improve patient outcomes. One important feature of COVID-19 pathophysiology is the activation of immune cells, with consequent massive production and release of inflammatory mediators that may cause impairment of several organ functions, including the brain. In addition to its classical role as a neurotransmitter, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) has immunomodulatory properties, downregulating the inflammatory response by central and peripheral me

Effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on motility of isolated fallopian tube.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) affect the smooth muscle cells acting on voltage-dependent channels for Na+ , K+ and Ca2+ , but their action is tissue and species specific. The aim of our study was to investigate effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on motility of the isolated fallopian tubes. Isolated preparations of isthmus and ampoule were taken from fallopian tubes of 20 women during hysterectomy due to uterine fibroids and then tested for reactivity on increasing concentrations of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors: a review of its effects on intraocular pressure.

The increase in serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission is considered to be one of the most efficacious medical approach to depression and its related disorders. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) represent the most widely antidepressive drugs utilized in the medical treatment of depressed patients. Currently available SSRIs include fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, citalopram and escitalopram. The primary SSRIs pharmacological action's mechanism consists in the presynaptic inhibition on the serotonin reuptake, with an increased availability of this amine into the sy

Chlorpheniramine, selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and over-the-counter (OTC) treatment.

Some old antihistamines were selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and the SSRI effect was discovered by Nobel Laureate Professor Arvid Carlsson as early as 1969. Chlorpheniramine was the most active of the tested drugs, and it compares favourably with amitriptyline and imipramine with respect to actions on both serotonergic and noradrenergic neurons. Chlorpheniramine can be called a SSRI, since the blocking of 5HT is stronger than the effect on noradrenaline neurons; however it might also be called a selective serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI) and be compared wi

The use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in autism and related disorders.

This paper reviews the published literature on the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for the treatment of symptoms associated with autistic disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) in both children and adults. To date, placebocontrolled studies of SSRIs have involved only fluvoxamine (in children and adults) and fluoxetine (in children). Open-label and retrospective studies of all other SSRIs in PDDs have also been published that suggest effectiveness. Despite these positive reports, there continues to be questions about the tolerability and appropriate

Aeromedical regulation of aviators using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for depressive disorders.

This report, prepared at the request of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA), reviews the present status of aeromedical regulation of depressive disorders and antidepressant medications, emphasizing the role of serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Aeromedical certifying authorities (CAs) generally prohibit pilots from flying with a diagnosed depressive disorder, and also prohibit flying while taking antidepressant medications, including SSRIs. Some CAs are reassessing these prohibitions, which are based on long aeromedical practices, in view of changing medical management of dep

Neonatal withdrawal syndrome after in utero exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

UNLABELLED: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a new group of antidepressants used in mild to moderate cases of depression. In studies evaluating the safety of SSRIs during pregnancy, no increase in major anomalies has been reported. This might have led to increasing off-label prescription of SSRIs to pregnant women. Neonatal withdrawal syndrome commonly occurs in infants exposed during the third trimester to drugs known to cause addiction. We report five cases of neonatal withdrawal syndrome after third trimester in utero SSRI exposure. In three cases the mother used paroxeti

Anxiety disorders: a review of tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders. While the older tricylic antidepressants (TCAs) are efficacious in the treatment of many anxiety disorders, recent studies with fluoxetine and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have emphasized the role of serotonin in the aetiology of these conditions. METHOD: We reviewed the efficacy, safety and tolerability of TCAs and SSRIs in the treatment of the most common anxiety disorders, specifically, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia and generalize
