The self-reinforcing cycle of financial toxicity in Epilepsy: an evolutionary concept analysis.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the entire household through its chronic course, lifelong medication requirements, and intensive caregiving demands. Financial toxicity, a concept originating in oncology, describes the harm that arises when the costs of care extend beyond the depletion of household resources to affect patients' and families' quality of life, psychological wellbeing, and treatment decisions. Despite these characteristics, financial toxicity in epilepsy has not yet been conceptualized as a unified clinical phenomenon; instead, research has remained fragmented ac

Self-concept and Narrative Identity in Youth at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Disturbances of the narrative self and personal identity accompany the onset of psychotic disorders in late adolescence and early adulthood (a formative developmental stage for self-concept and personal narratives). However, these issues have primarily been studied retrospectively after illness onset, limiting any inferences about their developmental course. STUDY DESIGN: Youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) (n = 49) and matched healthy comparison youth (n = 52) completed a life story interview (including self-defining memory, turning point, life challeng

Self-Assembled Peptide Nanostructures for Photoelectrochemical Bioanalysis Application: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Currently, one of important research directions of photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis is to exploit innovative photoactive species and their elegant implementations for selective detection and signal transduction. Different from existing candidates for photoelectrode development, this study, exemplified by the cationic dipeptide nanoparticles (CDNPs), reports the first demonstration of self-assembled peptide nanostructures (SAPNs) for the PEC bioanalysis. Specifically, the CDNPs were prepared as representative materials and then immobilized onto the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode for the

Clinical Correlates and Mediators of Self-Concept in Youth with Chronic Tic Disorders.

This study investigated the clinical correlates and mediators of self-concept in youth with Chronic Tic Disorders (CTD). Ninety-seven youth aged 6-17 (M = 11.1 ± 2.89; 79.4 % male) with CTD were administered the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale, the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale-Second Edition, and self-report and clinician-administered measures assessing behavioral and psychological difficulties and comorbid conditions. Youth with CTD had a slightly below average level of self-concept, with 20 % (n = 19) exhibiting low self-concept. Youth with CTD-only had greater self-concept rela

Impact of functional severity on self concept in young people with spina bifida.

This study examines the relationship between medical and functional severity of disability and levels of self esteem and self concept in 79 young people with spina bifida. Greater feelings of global self worth and of self esteem in physical appearance were associated with greater severity of disability. This was only in part an effect of lower IQ among the most disabled young people. Many of the least disabled had marked impairment of self esteem. Analysis of the impact of individual aspects of disability confirmed the association between increased self esteem in physical appearance and global

The self-concept of young people with spina bifida: a population-based study.

Seventy-nine young people with spina bifida were given a psychological, medical, carer and occupational therapy assessment. 79 matched able-bodied young people received the psychosocial interview. The disabled group felt themselves to be less competent in academic, athletic and social aspects of self-concept, less supported by classmates, equally supported by parents and friends and more supported by teachers than the able-bodied group. Disabled subjects did not discount the importance of any area of personal-social functioning, and experienced greater discrepancies between competence and impo

Out of synchrony with the imagined self: A scoping review of self-concept in premature ovarian insufficiency and early menopause.

OBJECTIVE: Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and early menopause (EM) can have life-altering physical and psychological impacts, with potential consequences for an individual's sense of self. However, understanding of these potential consequences is limited, with much of the literature generalizing such experiences from naturally occurring menopause. This scoping review aimed to increase understanding around the alteration of self-concept in adults, presumed female at birth, diagnosed with POI or EM. METHODS: In line with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) protocol for scoping reviews, dat

The moderating role of microsystem factors in the relationship between self-concept and self-determination in the Romanian context of disabilities.

Background: Research and theoretical models of self-determination and self-concept claim that microsystem ecological factors have an influence and manifest a predictive role in the relationship between self-concept and self-determination. Knowing the mechanisms through which personal and contextual factors influence or predict the self-determined behavior of students with disabilities, they will become benchmarks in the development of educational and therapeutic intervention programs that aim to promote and enhance the actions and skills associated with self-determination. Methods: The purpose

Teacher and Classmate Support on Self-Concept: A Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Study.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the predictive capacity of teacher and classmate support on self-concept at two time points. The sample was composed of 484 adolescents, 226 males, and 258 females. Results showed that teacher support predicted self-concept dimensions (five out of eight at Time 1 and four out of eight at Time 2) at both time points. Classmate support predicted self-concept dimensions (six out of eight at Time 1 and three out of eight at Time 2). Classmate support at Time 1 showed significant effects on opposite-sex relationships, same-sex relationships, and self-esteem

Neural processes related to negative self-concept in adult and adolescent anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Negative self-concept is characteristic of anorexia nervosa (AN), but the neural processes mediating this component of AN is unknown. These studies investigated how valence and social perspectives impact neural processing in both adults and adolescents with AN. METHOD: In an fMRI task, participants evaluated positive and negative adjectives from three social perspectives. Two studies were completed, one in 59 women (healthy, with AN, recovered from AN) and one in 42 adolescents (healthy, with AN). Neural regions of interest (ROIs) related to valence were identified and activations

Maternal self concept as a provider and cessation of substance use during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal substance use during pregnancy is a common modifiable risk factor for poor birth outcomes, and is associated with long term psychological risks to offspring. As self concept is known to affect substance use behaviors in non-pregnant women, we hypothesized that self concept as a provider may be particularly salient to cessation of use during pregnancy. To isolate psychological processes specific to pregnancy from those associated with the transition to parenthood, we examined birth mothers who made adoption placements participating in the Early Growth and Development Study.

Self-concept, academic performance and behavioral evaluation of the children of alcoholic parents.

OBJECTIVE: It has been shown that being the child of an alcoholic is a risk factor for the development of alcoholism in adulthood. Due to the suffering caused by living with alcoholic parents, other vulnerabilities appear in such children. Among these are low self-esteem, poor academic performance and behavioral problems. This work aims to comparatively evaluate children of alcoholic parents and children of nonalcoholic parents. METHODS: The study design was quasi-experimental, involving two comparison groups. Two groups of 20 children were selected. The groups consisted of 10- to 12-year-old
