BACKGROUND: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) may extend beyond the individual patient, affecting spouses and the couple's psychological adjustment and dyadic coping. Therefore, interventions that address both patients and their spouses and promote effective communication and dyadic coping may offer a promising approach to alleviating FCR and improving psychological well-being.
OBJECTIVE: This research seeks to evaluate how a marital self-disclosure intervention influences FCR and enhances dyadic coping in gastric cancer patients and their partners.
METHODS: We undertook a quasi-experimental s

Availability of HIV self-testing may increase HIV testing frequency among men who have sex with men (MSM). It is unclear, however, if self-testing may impact HIV-related sexual behaviors among MSM, including HIV status disclosure and condom use. We conducted a mixed methods analysis of changes in HIV-related behaviors after HIV self-testing introduction, using data from 110 MSM participating in a feasibility and acceptability study of HIV self-testing in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. We found increased HIV status disclosure from study participants to sexual partners after HIV self-testing

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses have confirmed an association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and non-suicidal and suicidal self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITB), yet the mechanisms linking these factors are, to date, poorly understood. The goal of the current study is to explore one potential influencing factor acting in the association between CSA and SITB, which is the disclosure experience. Disclosure has been identified as a prominent factor in the healing process of survivors, with a lack of support following disclosures heightening negative outcomes. Exploring the impact of CSA disclo

Context: The rate of HIV status disclosure to partners is low in Mali, a West African country with a national HIV prevalence of 1.2%. HIV self-testing (HIVST) could increase testing coverage among partners of people living with HIV (PLHIV). The AutoTest-VIH, Libre d'accéder à la connaissance de son Statut (ATLAS) program was launched in West Africa with the objective of distributing nearly half a million HIV self-tests from 2019 to 2021 in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal. The ATLAS program integrates several research activities. This article presents the preliminary results of the qualitative

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Disclosure of human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) sero-status is a difficult process that involves communication of information about a potentially stigmatizing and transmissible illness. Despite this, it is important for preventing HIV infection and mitigating its impacts. This study aimed to assess the rate and determinants of self-disclosure of HIV sero-status among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) attending an Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Clinic in North Central Nigeria with a view to promoting self- disclosure as an intervention for secondary prevention of HIV

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between mental health literacy (MHL), self-disclosure and psychological distress among HIV-positive young and middle-aged men who have sex with men (MSM). We hypothesised that self-disclosure would mediate the relationship between MHL and psychological distress.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Participants were recruited from the outpatient clinic of the Department of Infection at a tertiary hospital in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 209 HIV-positive young and middle-aged MSM.

BACKGROUND: Persons with aphasia (PWA) often have increased difficulty interacting with unfamiliar communicative partners, which can result in negative perceptions among listeners. However, self-disclosure of the disorder can allow for the empowerment of the individual and increased understanding of the situation for the listener.
AIMS: Towards that end, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the impact of self-disclosure, other-mediated disclosure, and no disclosure on the listeners' perceptions of the PWA's speech skills and personality characteristics.

Individuals with invisible disabilities continually undergo decision-making processes regarding whether or not, and if so, how to disclose their disability to others. While a great deal of theorization exists regarding disclosure processes, less work has considered how and why individuals with invisible disabilities forgo the disclosure process by making the invisible visible. This study examines motivations for using tattoos as a mechanism for invisible disability disclosure among the single-sided deaf (SSD) community. Interviews with 41 individuals with SSD across the U.S. reveal a complex s

OBJECTIVES: Concussion non-disclosure research has focused almost exclusively on athletes. The focus on athletic populations has been sensible considering athletes' demonstrated susceptibility to sustaining and concealing concussions. Nevertheless, the habitual use of athletic populations has allowed researchers and practitioners to omit the development of generalized perceived costs and perceived rewards as critical determinants of concussion self-disclosure. We hypothesized that perceiving concussion disclosure as generally more costly than rewarding would predict negative attitudes towards

BACKGROUND: Black women in the Southern U.S. account for 67% of all new HIV diagnoses across women of all races and ethnicities. In comparison to women of other racial and ethnic identities, Black women disproportionately experience internalized stigma, lower levels of disclosure self-efficacy, and lower rates of medical adherence. The disclosure processes model hypothesizes that persons living with HIV can be disclosure avoidance oriented or disclosure approach oriented. Disclosure avoidance is facilitated by various forms of stigma and negative outcome expectations. While disclosure approach

This review examines the current trends in understanding the impact of individuals' decisions to either disclose information or continue to conceal it. As a whole, the evidence points to a relative benefit of disclosure over secret-keeping, but with clear cases, in which disclosure may be harmful. Advances in knowledge about factors that shape that impact, new research on the role verbal rumination with a partner following disclosure, and attention to the role of communal coping as an outcome of traumatic disclosures are addressed. In addition, recent re-conceptualization of secret-keeping, an

INTRODUCTION: Research reveals the clinical efficacy of both verbal and written stuttering disclosure statements provided by a child who stutters (CWS) and his advocates (i.e., mother or teacher) [Lang Speech Hear Serv Sch. 2020 Jul;51(3):745-60 and Lang Speech Hear Serv Sch. 2021 Aug;52(4):1031-1048]. Although existing data reveal that both the source (i.e., self- vs. advocate disclosure) and modality (i.e., verbal or written) of stuttering disclosure yields significant improvements in the perceptions of speech skills and personality characteristics of CWS, there is a paucity of research dire

BACKGROUND: Self-disclosure, sharing of personal information, is crucial for initiating and deepening interpersonal relationships. Although it has been consistently shown that mutual self-disclosure fosters closeness between strangers, the underlying dual brain neural mechanism remains unexplored. This study aims to uncover these gender-modulated differences and their underlying neural mechanisms.
METHOD: We investigated the interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) among zero-history, same-gender strangers. We applied the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning technique

The purpose of this study was to describe behavioural and emotional symptoms and to examine the effect of abuse-related factors, family responses to disclosure, and child self-blame on these symptoms in children presenting for medical evaluations after disclosure of sexual abuse. A retrospective review was conducted of 501 children ages 8-17. Trauma symptoms were determined by two sets of qualitative measures. Abstracted data included gender, ethnicity, and age; severity of abuse and abuser relationship to child; child responses regarding difficulty with sleep, school, appetite/weight, sadness

BACKGROUND: Recantation after child sexual abuse (CSA) disclosure refers to the complete denial of prior reports by a victim. In substantiated cases of CSA, recantation has negative effects on criminal proceedings and the protection of current and future victims. Past studies have identified the socio-family factors and CSA characteristics that are associated with recantation. However, the systematization of these risk factors remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the predictors of recantation using a sample of criminal cases of CSA.

BackgroundFew studies have explored the potential for family dynamics to hinder or promote help-seeking and disclosure behaviours among adolescents who self-harm or experience suicidality. We sought to examine whether family dynamics may influence self-harm-related disclosure to parents or other family members and online help-seeking.MethodsWe identified youths, 14-17 years, in the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS) who self-reported past-year suicidal ideation (with or without a suicide plan or past suicide attempt[s]) and/or non-suicidal self-harm. The OCHS is a provincially representati

OBJECTIVE: Children who experience sexual abuse (CSA) often delay disclosure, thus impeding early interventions. This study explores predictors of disclosure latency in a sample of forensically substantiated cases.
METHODS: Court files were analyzed for a total of 124 cases of CSA. The ground truth of the alleged victims' statements had been substantiated by at least one inclusion criterion-an evaluation of the alleged victims' statement as credible by psychological experts applying Statement Validity Assessment (SVA), or the conviction of the suspected offender by the court. The present study examined personal disclosures about mental illness and the responses of online community members on the social media platform, Tumblr. We sampled public blog posts of 14,626 Tumblr users disclosing ten different mental health diagnoses using hashtags (e.g., #depression, #anxiety, and #anorexia). We examined the content of users' disclosures, predictors of disclosure frequency, and predictors of online community response. The content of most disclosures was related to users' emotions and cognitions about their mental health and their feelings of interpersonal loss and change o

OBJECTIVE: Most research concerning the implications of self-disclosure on trauma's aftermath has focused on the salubrious effects disclosure may foster for the primary victim. However, the manner in which recipients of disclosure are symptomatically affected by it remains unexamined. Of particular interest are spouses who are often the primary support providers and are therefore susceptible to secondary traumatization. Assessing posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and self-disclosure among traumatized veterans and their wives, the current longitudinal study begins to fill this gap in the li
