Self-mutilation is the deliberate direct injuring of body tissue, often done without suicidal intention. Genital self-mutilation is a very rare event and self-harm of the penis, especially in the genital system is exceedingly rare. Generally, this kind of behavior is related to psychotic disorders but can sometimes be seen in non-psychotic people due to bizarre autoerotic acts, a desire for to change sex or religious beliefs that view sexual intercourse as a sin. Our case was the reported genital self-mutilation as a result of the bizarre sexual arousal of a young man who is employed as an arc

In summary, both self-mutilators and eating-disordered individuals come from dysfunctional homes with a very controlling mother and usually absent father. They often have a history of trauma. They are depressed and obsessive, attached to their mothers, who discourage attempts at emancipation. The symptoms serve the purpose of keeping them as little girls with negative feelings toward menstruation, sexual maturity, development, and femininity in general. These symptoms comprise self-destructive behavior in the service of removing sexual thoughts, temptation, and activities. Favazza (1987) inclu

In a prospective study, the incidence and clinical presentation of self-mutilation was documented in 127 consecutive cases of obstetric brachial plexus injury. Six out of the 127 cases (4.7%) had clinical evidence of self-mutilation. The incidence of self-mutilation was much higher among children with total palsy (4/37) than Erb's palsy (2/90). All affected children were able to bring the mutilated hand or forearm to the mouth without assistance from the contralateral normal limb. Mutilation in patients with total palsy was generally severe and usually involved biting the tips of the digits. H

Nonlethal forms of self-injury are often discussed together with suicide attempts as though they belonged on a continuum of self-harm. Both types of self-injury are common in prisons, which have a predominantly male population; however, most studies of nonlethal self-injury have been done with female subjects. This exploratory study tested the hypothesis that prisoners who injured themselves without intending to die would differ clinically from prisoners who had attempted suicide. Inmates admitted to the prison unit of a public hospital for treatment of self-inflicted wounds or who had a histo

Automutilation is a voluntary autoprovoked lesion, which determines infirmities of different degrees. The paper presents the case of a 25-year-old patient, who, being in detention, pricked his both eyes using a needle. This action provoked endophthalmitis and bilateral traumatic cataract. The particularity of the case consists of the bilaterality of the autoagression, with serious evolution at the both eyes.

Three mentally retarded children with severe self-inflicted ocular injuries are presented. All three suffered from severe ocular injuries including retinal detachment resulting in progressive visual loss and even blindness. Self-inflicted injuries to the eyes, including self enucleation, is an extremely uncommon form of behavior, rarely encountered by pediatricians. The risk of ocular morbidity is high if the diagnosis is overlooked. Technical advances in ophthalmology permit much improvement in some formerly hopeless cases of ocular self-mutilation, but there is still no accurate method to re

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine whether self-mutilators with personality disorders differ from nonmutilators with personality disorders in impulsivity, aggression, and other psychopathology and whether serotonergic dysfunction contributes to self-mutilation.
METHOD: Twenty-six self-mutilators with personality disorders were matched to 26 control subjects with personality disorders for gender, age, education, axis I diagnosis of affective disorder, and axis II diagnosis of personality disorder. Numerous indexes of psychopathology as well as CSF 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS), a rare inborn error of metabolism, is characterized by self-injurious behavior, which results in partial or total destruction of oral and perioral tissues and/ or fingers. Persistent self-injurious behavior (biting the fingers, hands, lips, and cheeks; banging the head or limbs) is a hallmark of the disease. Prevention of self-mutilation raises significant difficulties. A case of a 10-month-old boy with aggressive behavior and severe lower lip injuries is presented. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Literature findings mainly support the notion that suicide attempts (SA) and self-mutilating behavior (SMB) are distinct behaviors, although they may share common psychopathological features. In the present paper we aimed to identify behavioral phenotypes in patients with SA, SMB, or both (SAM) and to analyze the association with candidate genes.
METHODS: One hundred forty-two inpatients with a history of SA (n = 86), SMB (n = 22), and SAM (n = 39) were included in this study. Subjects were evaluated using the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and the Buss-Du

Self-mutilation in the context of factitious disorder can lead to prolonged and complicated treatment in every medical field. Because of a prevalence of 1-5% in hospitalised patients, it is important to be aware of this disorder to protect patients from self- and foreign-induced harm. Often the patient history gives important hints. The different manifestations of this disorder, the specific doctor-patient relationship, several techniques of confrontation and current treatment are presented. Clinical cases from the fields of hand and plastic surgery are presented.

Self-inflicted lesions that cause mutilation are observed in schizophrenic patients. This case report describes the diagnosis and treatment of simple schizophrenia in a 31-year-old male patient who bit his own tongue and lower lip. The dental treatment proposed included the construction of a splint to prevent new lesions and to allow healing of existing ones. The treatment afforded to avoid tooth extraction before the patient responded to psychiatric drug treatment. The importance of a transdisciplinary approach to self-mutilation due to psychiatric disorders is stressed. The interaction betwe

BACKGROUND: Research on self-mutilating behaviour and incarcerated adults has found that nearly 50% of people in prison participated in it (Holley and Alborleda-Florez, 1988). This is an enormous liability for the criminal justice system as well as a human concern.
AIMS/HYPOTHESES: The research question for this study was to explore whether a history of childhood abuse in a sample of incarcerated women would increase their likelihood of self-mutilation.
METHODS: Participants were 256 female inmates from five prisons in a large southern state who volunteered to attend a 12-week trauma and abu

OBJECTIVE: Individuals who mutilate themselves are at greater risk for suicidal behavior. Clinically, however, there is a perception that the suicide attempts of self-mutilators are motivated by the desire for attention rather than by a genuine wish to die. The purpose of this study was to determine differences between suicide attempters with and without a history of self-mutilation.
METHOD: The authors examined demographic characteristics, psychopathology, objective and perceived lethality of suicide attempts, and perceptions of their suicidal behavior in 30 suicide attempters with cluster B

During the last few years an increasing number of cases of extensive automutilation has been observed in a rabbit breeding colony of Checkered crosses. Digits and pads of the front feet were traumatized. No other behavioural abnormalities or signs of disease were evident. Self-mutillation was seen both in stock, breeding and experimental animals, in rabbits kept singly in cages and in those housed in groups on the ground, in rabbits kept in different buildings and under the care of different staff members. This behavioural abnormality of Checkered crosses has also been observed in animals afte

This paper describes a man who mutilated his genitals while psychotic. His personal case history is analyzed and compared to the findings earlier described in similar patients. The present article attempts to make a psychotic process understandable both in light of the individual patient's history and in light of shared common unconscious themes.

A case report of a young female teenager with a long history of self-destruction of her hands by chewing, scratching, and gnawing is presented. This habit was related to her successfully repaired cervical meningomyelocele in infancy. Not only did she first present with ulcerations and osteomyelitis, but also with distal autoamputation and severe iron deficiency anemia. A team approach with a pediatrician, neurologist, psychiatrist, and plastic surgeon was employed for her treatment. Behavior modification was moderately successful. Her hands and forearms were reconstructed with arthrodesis, loc

Correlation of self-mutilation and sleep stage in the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome was studied by a polygraphic method. Five patients and three control boys were monitored with EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG and respiration throughout the night. The results were as follows: 1. The sleep-time of the patients was much disturbed during the night. 2. Decreased REM density was noticed with low DQ of the patients. 3. Self-mutilation during sleep-time was observed a lot in stages 1, 2, and REM in two cases. 4. No correlation was observed between body movement and self-mutilation in the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. These data s

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is an inherited recessive X-related disorder caused by a deficiency of the purine salvage enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase. It is characterized by dystonia and compulsive self-mutilation, in particular, biting behavior on the oral mucosa, tongue, lips, fingers, and shoulders, typically before one year of age. The majority of these patients require several procedures, including dental extractions, to prevent significant secondary lesions. This article aims to report a clinical case of a 12-year-old boy with an LNS diagnosis who was referred to the
