Prisoners' experience of health self-management: A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Among the noninstitutionalized population, health care is increasingly shifting from a paternalistic model toward promoting patients' involvement in decision-making and in managing their condition. This paradigm shift toward health self-management is less applicable to individuals in prison whose health management choices are limited. The aim of this study was to explore prisoners' health self-management needs and the strategies used to maintain health self-management in a highly restrictive prison environment. DESIGN: A qualitative phenomenological study design was selected for this

Self-inflicted craniomaxillofacial gunshot wounds: management, reconstruction, and outcomes.

Suicide by firearm remains one of the leading causes of violence-related injury death in the United States each year. The mortality rate from these injuries is high, resulting in a paucity of outcome data in the literature regarding injuries to the maxillofacial region. This has largely been attributed to a lack of funding for research in this area compared to other leading causes of mortality in the United States. The aim of this study was to detail the authors' experience and approach to complex maxillofacial reconstruction using both local reconstructive methods and microvascular free tissu

Empowering patient self-management through tailored compression garment regimens.

Over recent years, compression wraps, also known as adjustable compression wrapping devices (ACWDs), have become an increasingly important part of lymphoedema management. Widely used in lymphoedema clinics, they are also now a popular treatment choice within tissue viability, as well as in practice and community nursing, where their cost- and resource-saving advantages are greatly appreciated. Easywrap from Haddenham Healthcare is a popular choice among both health professionals and patients, due to its low profile, making it a comfortable option for wearing beneath normal clothes, and its unc

Improving self-management in adolescents with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with significant medical challenges that often worsen in adolescence when caregivers are beginning to transfer responsibility for disease management. Behavioral activation (BA) is an important precedent to improvements in self-management and ultimately health outcomes; however, few interventions targeting BA have been developed for the SCD population. The goal of the present study was to evaluate a technology-enhanced self-management intervention for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with SCD targeting BA domains (ie, disease knowledge, self

Epilepsy self-management behaviors among African Americans with epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Although self-management practices are heavily studied in the general population of adults with epilepsy, African American people with epilepsy (PWE) have been understudied. Improving understanding about epilepsy self-management among African Americans is warrantedbecause of the significantly greater mortality rates among this population compared withPWE from other racial/ethnic groups. The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Adult Epilepsy Self-Management Measurement Instrument (AESMMI) for Black/African American adults and describe their self-mana

Critical examination of skin care self-management in lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is a long-term chronic condition that results from lymphatic insufficiency and may cause skin changes, which can cause discomfort and impact patient' quality of life. The four cornerstones of lymphoedema management are exercise, lymphatic massage, compression and skin care. This article critically examines self-management in lymphoedema focusing on skin care. Patients may initially demonstrate enthusiasm to undertake the required skin care independently. However, psychosocial factors, such as financial burden and physical restraints, can affect motivation and behaviours over time.

Optimising management of self-inflicted burns: a retrospective review.

OBJECTIVE: Self-inflicted burns typically result in extensive injuries requiring intensive care and attention in a specialised burn unit. Burn units should be familiar with the optimal management of self-inflicted burns, including the psychological and psychiatric treatment. This paper describes the experiences of managing these challenging injuries in a German burn centre. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with self-inflicted burns admitted to the burn centre between 2000 and 2017. Demographics, details of injury, presence of psychiatric disorder, clinical course, operative managem

Self-management of medical abortion: a qualitative evidence synthesis.

Medical abortion is a method of pregnancy termination that by its nature enables more active involvement of women in the process of managing, and sometimes even administering the medications for, their abortions. This qualitative evidence synthesis reviewed the global evidence on experiences with, preferences for, and concerns about greater self-management of medical abortion with lesser health professional involvement. We focused on qualitative research from multiple perspectives on women's experiences of self-management of first trimester medical abortion (<12weeks gestation). We included re

Wellness and illness self-management skills in community corrections.

Community corrections provide a readjustment venue for re-entry between incarceration and home for inmates in the US corrections system. Our goal was to determine how self-management skills, an important predictor of re-entry success, varied by demographic and risk factors. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed responses of 675 clients from 57 community corrections programs run by the regional division of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. A self-administered survey collected data on self-management skills, demographics, and risk factors; significant associations were applied in four regressi

Self management for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Self management interventions help patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) acquire and practise the skills they need to carry out disease-specific medical regimens, guide changes in health behaviour and provide emotional support to enable patients to control their disease. Since the first update of this review in 2007, several studies have been published. The results of the second update are reported here. OBJECTIVES: 1. To evaluate whether self management interventions in COPD lead to improved health outcomes.2. To evaluate whether self management interventions

BACKGROUND: Advancements in smartphone technology coupled with the proliferation of data connectivity has resulted in increased interest and unprecedented growth in mobile applications for diabetes self-management. The objective of this article is to determine, in a systematic review, whether diabetes applications have been helping patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes self-manage their condition and to identify issues necessary for large-scale adoption of such interventions. METHODS: The review covers commercial applications available on the Apple App Store (as a representative of commerci

Interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed using 'framework' analysis. Ethical approval was obtained. RESULTS: Three themes emerged: patterns and causes, consequences and management of fatigue. While patients' descriptions of fatigue were similar, the pattern
