A Comparison of Item Acquisition and Response Generalization for Semantic Versus Phonological Treatment of Aphasia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to examine whether therapy-related improvements in trained versus untrained items (acquisition and response generalization, respectively) are differentially affected by phonological versus semantic language treatments and to investigate individual variables associated with treatment response. METHOD: Sixty-three participants with chronic poststroke aphasia were included in this retrospective analysis of data from a large, multisite clinical trial with an unblinded cross-over design in which all participants underwent 3 weeks of semantic treatment and 3 wee

Abnormalities of lexical and semantic processing in left temporal lobe epilepsy: an fMRI study.

PURPOSE: We examined the efficiency of lexical and semantic processing and associated brain activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: Twenty patients with left TLE (10 with hippocampal sclerosis, the HS group; and 10 with nonlesional MR scans, the NL group) and 12 healthy controls underwent an event-related fMRI analysis during a lexical decision task (LDT). Lexical and semantic processing were examined by comparing behavioral and imaging data associated with words and nonwords (lexicality) or with concrete and a

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Language Information Representation within the Left Inferior Parietal Lobule Network: An Intracranial SEEG Study.

The left inferior parietal lobe (IPL) supports diverse cognitive functions through the finely differentiated yet coordinated interactions of its subregions, including the supramarginal gyrus (SMG), angular gyrus (AG), and lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus (lbIPS). However, how these subregions dynamically represent and exchange information during cognitive processing remains unclear. Language processing, integrating visual form, phonology, and semantics provide an ideal model for investigating the IPL's functional capabilities and dynamics. To overcome the limitations of traditional neu

A case series comparison of semantically focused vs. phonologically focused cued naming treatment in aphasia.

There is a lack of clarity in the field regarding how to best predict which naming treatment will be most beneficial for a particular individual with aphasia. The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether or not semantic or phonological therapy differentially impacts on outcomes for people with a range of different aphasic profiles when given both therapies. A single-participant design, with multiple repeated baselines for naming, replicated across four participants, was used. Participants were provided with a counterbalanced order of Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA) and Phonological Compo

Neural patterns differentiate traumatic from sad autobiographical memories in PTSD.

For people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), recall of traumatic memories often displays as intrusions that differ profoundly from processing of 'regular' negative memories. These mnemonic features fueled theories speculating a unique cognitive state linked with traumatic memories. Yet, to date, little empirical evidence supports this view. Here we examined neural activity of patients with PTSD who were listening to narratives depicting their own memories. An intersubject representational similarity analysis of cross-subject semantic content and neural patterns revealed a differentia

Category specific semantic loss in dementia of Alzheimer's type. Functional-anatomical correlations from cross-sectional analyses.

In the context of focal brain injury, selective loss of semantic knowledge in the domain of either natural kinds or artefacts is usually considered to reflect the differential importance of temporal and frontoparietal regions to the representations of perceptual and functional attributes, respectively. It is harder to account far as a feature of a more diffuse process, and previous cross-sectional analyses of patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) have differed over whether category effects occur. In our series of 58 patients with probable DAT, we demonstrated a significant group adv

Material specific lateralization of medial temporal lobe function: An fMRI investigation.

The theory of material specific lateralization of memory function posits that left and right MTL regions are asymmetrically involved in mnemonic processing of verbal and nonverbal material respectively. Lesion and functional imaging (fMRI) studies provide robust evidence for a left MTL asymmetry in the verbal memory domain. Evidence for a right MTL/nonverbal asymmetry is not as robust. A handful of fMRI studies have investigated this issue but have generally utilised nonverbal stimuli which are amenable to semantic elaboration. This fMRI study aimed to investigate the neural correlates of reco

Decoding semantic categories: insights from an fMRI ALE meta analysis.

Objective. The human brain organizes conceptual knowledge into semantic categories; however, the extent to which these categories share common or distinct neural representations remains unclear. This study aims to clarify this organizational structure by identifying consistent, modality-controlled activation patterns across several widely used and frequently investigated semantic domains in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) research. By quantifying the distinctiveness and overlap among these patterns, we provide a more precise foundation for understanding the brain's semantic archite

Q-GrAM: Fine-Grained Image-Text Retrieval via Grouped Query Routing and Conditional Query Modulation.

Existing image-text retrieval methods often compute cross-modal similarity using global single-vector representations. Although efficient for coarse semantic alignment, such compressed representations are limited when textual queries involve fine-grained semantics, including objects, attributes, relations, and their compositional structures. This paper focuses on fine-grained text-to-image retrieval and proposes Q-GrAM, a retrieval-oriented adaptation of the BLIP-2 Q-Former. Instead of treating Q-Former queries as a homogeneous set, Q-GrAM partitions a fixed query budget into semantically diff

Fractal analysis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) semantic features to identify intracranial solitary fibrous tumours and atypical meningiomas.

AIM: Atypical meningioma (ATM) and solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) are two prevalent meningeal tumours that pose significant challenges in preoperative differentiation. This study aims to distinguish between them using fractal analysis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) semantic features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 81 patients, comprising 30 SFTs and 51 ATMs, diagnosed between January 2019 and December 2023. At the maximal tumour cross-section, fractal dimension (FD) and lacunarity were computed for the tumour region using the open-source software Imag

The processing of semantic relatedness in the brain: Evidence from associative and categorical false recognition effects following transcranial direct current stimulation of the left anterior temporal lobe.

A dominant view of the role of the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) in semantic memory is that it serves as an integration hub, specialized in the processing of semantic relatedness by way of mechanisms that bind together information from different brain areas to form coherent amodal representations of concepts. Two recent experiments, using brain stimulation techniques along with the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm, have found a consistent false memory reduction effect following stimulation of the ATL, pointing to the importance of the ATL in semantic/conceptual processing. Cued fluency protocol reveals dynamic symptomatic-dependent processes of goal-directed behaviours in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Differential impairments of willed actions and routine behaviours are the subject of many studies into schizophrenia. These impairments in generating and controlling goal-directed behaviours are reported in studies showing the effect of cueing in cognitive or motor tasks in people with schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of people with schizophrenia in a cued fluency protocol reworked to fit the concept of goal-directed behaviour. The extent to which results could be better explained by goal-directed generation issues, according to a symptomatic fra

Amnesia and the organization of the hippocampal system.

Early hippocampal injury in humans has been found to result in a limited form of global anterograde amnesia. At issue is whether the limitation is qualitative, with the amnesia reflecting substantially greater impairment in episodic than in semantic memory, or only quantitative, with both episodic and semantic memory being partially and equivalently impaired. Evidence from neuroanatomical and lesion studies in animals suggests that the hippocampus and subhippocampal cortices form a hierarchically organized system, such that the greatest convergence of information (and, by implication, the rich

Primary progressive aphasia: linguistic patterns and clinical variants.

We investigated whether primary progressive aphasias (PPA) reflect non-random degradation of linguistic dimensions that might be supported by different neural subsystems and to what extent this degradation contributes to the emergence of clinical entities: semantic (S), logopenic (L) and nonfluent (NF) aphasia; apraxia of speech was also considered if associated with language disorders (AOS/aph). Forty-two aphasic patients are reported. Two main definable patterns of linguistic deficits tended to emerge that corresponded with identifiable patterns of brain atrophy, and probably diseases: the S

The use of semantic- and phonological-based feature approaches to treat naming deficits in aphasia.

The aim of the study was to compare approaches highlighting either semantic or phonological features to treat naming deficits in aphasia. Treatment focused on improving picture naming. An alternating treatments design was used with a multiple baseline design across stimuli to examine effects of both approaches in two participants with varying degrees of anomia. The features approaches were modified in that three, rather than six, features were used. Significant differential effects were found across participants; this appeared to be a function of each participant's strengths or preferences ove

Knowledge of New English vocabulary in amnesia: an examination of premorbidly acquired semantic memory.

To assess if amnesics have intact remote memory for general semantic information, we examined memory for vocabulary words with known dates of entry into the language between 1955 and 1989. Amnesics of mixed etiology with acute onset performed normally on both a recall and a recognition task. Korsakoff patients, in contrast, were impaired on both tasks and demonstrated a gradient such that their knowledge of words acquired during more recent time periods was worse than that of words acquired during more remote time periods. The improvement in performance associated with recognition testing was

Multimodal Feature Integration in the Angular Gyrus during Episodic and Semantic Retrieval.

UNLABELLED: Much evidence from distinct lines of investigation indicates the involvement of angular gyrus (AnG) in the retrieval of both episodic and semantic information, but the region's precise function and whether that function differs across episodic and semantic retrieval have yet to be determined. We used univariate and multivariate fMRI analysis methods to examine the role of AnG in multimodal feature integration during episodic and semantic retrieval. Human participants completed episodic and semantic memory tasks involving unimodal (auditory or visual) and multimodal (audio-visual) s

Uncertainty weighted multi task learning for robust traffic scene semantic understanding.

This paper addresses perception degradation caused by adverse weather, occlusion, and asynchronous sampling by proposing an uncertainty-weighted multi-task learning framework for robust semantic understanding of traffic scenes (UW-MTL). The method performs differentiable multi-source spatiotemporal alignment to unify camera, LiDAR, radar, and IMU into a BEV sequence, and adopts a hybrid backbone that combines a Mixture of Experts Transformer with a spatiotemporal graph neural network to balance global semantics and local topology. Each task employs evidential prediction heads that explicitly o

The Effect of Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury on Verbal Fluency Performance: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Verbal fluency is a neuropsychological measure commonly used to examine cognitive-linguistic performance as reported in pediatric TBI literature. We synthesized the scholarly literature of verbal fluency performance in pediatric TBI and estimated the effects of TBI according to: (i) type of verbal fluency task (phonemic or semantic), (ii) severity of TBI, and (iii) time post-injury. Meta-analysis revealed that childhood TBI negatively impacted phonemic fluency and semantic fluency and that effect sizes were larger for children with more severe TBI. The negative effect of TBI was evident across

Reading difficulties in primary progressive aphasia in a regular language-speaking cohort of patients.

Reading impairment is an important feature in Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). The Spanish orthography entails completely regular spelling to sound correspondences, so reading disorders may be different to English. In the current study, reading, phonological and semantic abilities of 35 patients with the three variants of PPA, and 13 healthy volunteers were assessed. Brain metabolism was concomitantly obtained from each participant using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography imaging. Two main patterns of impairment were identified: difficulties in nonwords reading with preserva
