Semantic memory in object use.

We studied five patients with semantic memory disorders, four with semantic dementia and one with herpes simplex virus encephalitis, to investigate the involvement of semantic conceptual knowledge in object use. Comparisons between patients who had semantic deficits of different severity, as well as the follow-up, showed that the ability to use objects was largely preserved when the deficit was mild but progressively decayed as the deficit became more severe. Naming was generally more impaired than object use. Production tasks (pantomime execution and actual object use) and comprehension tasks

Semantic memory and the human hippocampus.

It has been unclear whether the hippocampus is uniquely important for episodic memory (memory for events that are specific to time and place) or whether the hippocampus is also important for learning and remembering facts (semantic memory). In two studies, we assessed the capacity for semantic memory in patients with bilateral damage thought to be restricted primarily to the hippocampal region who developed memory impairment at a known time. Since the onset of their memory impairment, the patients have acquired less factual knowledge than controls. The patients also exhibit temporally limited

[Dysphonetic dyslexia and semantic path].

The author formulates the core question of the research in some severe forms reading disturbances in children. The aim is to develop a model at the interface between the cognitive approach and the affective approach so as to analyze the different elements of the global strategy adopted by some children diagnosed as "dysphonetic dyslexics" when confronted with written material. The author defines the theoretical and methodological prerequisites that are necessary for such a clinical investigation focused on a symptom.

Semantic errors in a deep dyslexic.

A case of a Swedish-speaking deep dyslexic is reported whose semantic paralexias appeared to result mainly from a lexical retrieval failure in oral reading. He was able to draw correct pictures of the written words for which he had simultaneously produced a semantically erroneous oral reading response. Repeated attempts to correct paralexic responses were common, indicating that the patient was often aware of the errors. His lexical retrieval problems and semantic errors extended to naming as well, and the results support Nolan and Caramazza's (1982, Brain and Language, 16, 237-264), dual-defi

Implicit access to semantic information.

Three experiments investigating the patient M.S.'s semantic memory are reported. Experiments 1 and 2 involved a category-membership decision task, in which M.S. was asked to determine whether a noun was a member of a specified semantic category. His performance in Experiment 1 was impaired for nouns from living categories in comparison with nouns from nonliving categories, and this impairment was especially marked for nouns of low typicality. Experiment 2 demonstrated an equivalent pattern of very poor performance to nouns of low familiarity from living categories. In Experiment 3 the effect o

The Neural Consequences of Semantic Composition.

Humans can create completely new concepts through semantic composition. These "conceptual combinations" can be created by attributing the features of one concept to another (e.g., a "lemon flamingo" might be a yellow flamingo) or drawing on a relationship between concepts (e.g., a "lemon flamingo" might consume lemons). We ask how semantic composition modulates the neural representations of underlying concepts. Combining fMRI with multivariate pattern analysis, we interrogate neural patterns for concepts before and after they were subjected to semantic composition. We observe a postcomposition

Cerebellar hyperperfusion in semantic dementia.

Despite evidence of a cerebellar contribution to language, possible functional changes of the cerebellum in patients with language impairment secondary to cerebral neurodegeneration has not been investigated so far. We examined with resting perfusion single photon emission tomography one patient with semantic dementia and the data were compared with a normal subject database. Region of interest and Statistical Parametric Mapping 2 analysis showed in the patient hypoperfusion of the left temporal and parietal lobe and hyperperfusion in the superior vermis and cerebellar hemispheres (lobules IV,

Cotard syndrome in semantic dementia.

BACKGROUND: Semantic dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of meaning of words or concepts. semantic dementia can offer potential insights into the mechanisms of content-specific delusions. OBJECTIVE: The authors present a rare case of semantic dementia with Cotard syndrome, a delusion characterized by nihilism or self-negation. METHOD: The semantic deficits and other features of semantic dementia were evaluated in relation to the patient's Cotard syndrome. RESULTS: Mrs. A developed the delusional belief that she was wasting and dying. This occurred after she lo

Flavour processing in semantic dementia.

The cognitive mechanisms for the analysis of flavour information remain poorly understood. Patients with semantic dementia (SD) could potentially provide a window on these mechanisms; however, while abnormal eating behaviour and altered food preferences are common in SD, flavour processing has been little studied in this disorder. Here we undertook a detailed investigation of flavour processing in three patients at different stages of SD. One patient with a clinical syndrome of logopenic aphasia (LPA) was studied as a disease control, and six healthy control subjects also participated. Olfacti

Semantic processing of neglected numbers.

While neglected stimuli can still be processed, few studies have directly addressed the issue of the unconscious access to semantics. In order to clarify this issue, we engaged four patients with unilateral left spatial neglect in a number comparison task. Each target number was preceded by a lateralized number prime, either in the intact or neglected hemifield (HF). Both group analyses and the intensive study of a single patient show that left (neglected) as well as right (consciously perceived) number primes affect performance: primes representing quantities that fall on the same side of the

The pathological basis of semantic dementia.

Semantic dementia is a syndrome of progressive deterioration in semantic memory (knowledge of objects, people, concepts and words). It falls within the clinical spectrum of frontotemporal dementia but its pathology is yet to be studied systematically. This study included 18 consecutive post mortem cases meeting clinical criteria for semantic dementia. Clinic records and diagnostic histopathology were available for all cases; structural neuroimaging, neuropsychology and semi-quantitative histopathology/immunohistochemistry data were analysed where possible. The pathological diagnosis in a clear

[Osteoporosis and demineralization: a semantic confusion].

Osteoporosis is the most frequent demineralizing disease. However, when a demineralized vertebra is identified, other diseases must be ruled out in the course of diagnosis. Through three clinical cases, we analyze pitfalls that have delayed the diagnosis of one rare, but unfortunately lethal, aetiology: multiple myeloma.

Designing vocabulary multiple-choice tests for exploring word frequency effects in distributional semantics.

The representation of word meanings by positions in a vector space is now widely used across a range of psychological models and technological applications. There exist many different approaches for creating such vectors, with distributional semantic vectors (DSVs) often produced directly or indirectly from word co-occurrence statistics derived from large corpora of natural language. One of the most widely used methods for testing and comparing their performance is the vocabulary multiple-choice question (VMCQ) test, in which the best synonym of each tested word has to be identified from among

The semantics of "Doctor": A case of confused identity between nurses and physicians?

The growing number of Doctor of Nursing Practice graduates providing direct clinical care has reignited public and professional debate about the use of the title "Doctor." Although based on academic achievement, the title can unintentionally create confusion among patients and team members regarding provider roles and responsibilities. This commentary reexamines this issue in the context of doctorally prepared health care professionals who, through their education, training, and licensure, provide direct patient care. Recognizing that it truly "takes a village" to deliver the highest quality h

The Efficacy of Semantics-Preserving Transformations in Self-Supervised Learning for Medical Ultrasound.

Data augmentation is a central component of joint embedding self-supervised learning (SSL). Approaches that work for natural images may not always be effective in medical imaging tasks. This study systematically investigated the impact of data augmentation and preprocessing strategies in SSL for lung ultrasound. Three data augmentation pipelines were assessed: (1) a baseline pipeline commonly used across imaging domains, (2) a novel semantic-preserving pipeline designed for ultrasound, and (3) a distilled set of the most effective transformations from both pipelines. Pretrained models were eva

Differentiating hemispheric contributions to syntax and semantics in patients with left-hemisphere lesions.

Understanding the relationship between brain and cognition critically depends on data from brain-damaged patients since these provide major constraints on identifying the essential components of brain-behavior systems. Here we relate structural and functional fMRI data with behavioral data in 21 human patients with chronic left hemisphere (LH) lesions and a range of language impairments to investigate the controversial issue of the role of the hemispheres in different language functions. We address this issue within a dual neurocognitive model of spoken language comprehension in which core lin
