Agency Deficits in a Human Genetic Model of Schizophrenia: Insights From 22q11DS Patients.

Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling mental illness characterized by a disordered sense of self. Current theories suggest that deficiencies in the sense of control over one's actions (Sense of Agency, SoA) may underlie some of the symptoms of schizophrenia. However, it is not clear if agency deficits are a precursor or a result of psychosis. Here, we investigated full body agency using virtual reality in a cohort of 22q11 deletion syndrome participants with a genetic propensity for schizophrenia. In two experiments employing virtual reality, full body motion tracking, and online feedback,

Activity of the inferior parietal cortex is modulated by visual feedback delay in the robot hand illusion.

The robot hand illusion (RoHI) is the perception of self-ownership and self-agency of a virtual (robot) hand that moves consistently with one's own. The phenomenon shows that self-attribution can be established via temporal integration of visual and movement information. Our previous study showed that participants felt significantly greater RoHI (sense of self-ownership and sense of self-agency) when visuomotor temporal discrepancies were less than 200 ms. A weaker RoHI effect (sense of self-agency only) was observed when temporal discrepancies were between 300 and 500 ms. Here, we used functi

Bodily self-perception during voluntary actions: The causal contribution of premotor cortex and cerebellum.

Voluntary actions are accompanied by the experience of controlling one's own movements (sense of agency) and the feeling that the moving body part belongs to one's self (sense of body ownership). So far, agency and body ownership have been investigated separately, leaving the neural underpinnings of the relation between the two largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to explore the causal role of two multisensory brain regions, that is the premotor cortex (PMc) and the cerebellum, in agency and body ownership concurrently on the same behavioral task, i.e., the moving Rubber Hand Illusion

The role of embodied sense of self in the relationship of childhood abuse types to distress and fear.

Theoretical models suggest that childhood abuse erodes embodied sense of self (ESS), a multidimensional entity that encompasses both subjective embodied experience and narrative identity. However, no studies have evaluated the impacts of childhood abuse types on the minimal and narrative selves simultaneously or examined the role of this integrated sense of self in the relationship of childhood abuse to psychopathology. The present cross-sectional study investigated ESS as a mediator from childhood emotional abuse (CEA), childhood sexual abuse (CSA), and childhood physical abuse (CPA) to fear

Co-occurring Threats to Agency Among Female Sex Workers in Baltimore, Maryland.

Driven largely by the unequal distribution of power, female sex workers (FSW) globally bear a disproportionately high burden of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and interpersonal violence. Prior literature has identified a number of multi-level factors that may serve to constrain FSWs' agency, or their ability to define and take action to realize goals. Among these are work-based violence and substance use, which are potentiated by the criminalization of sex work and structural vulnerability. Quantitative research related to U.S.-based FSWs' own sense of agency, as well as the barriers th

Brain activity and the perception of self-agency while viewing a video of hand grasping: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Self-agency is the recognition of one's own movement and plays a vital role in purposeful, voluntary movement. A sense of self-agency can be elicited in individuals who view their own simple finger movements as they are projected onto a screen and aligned with their actual hand position. Here, we examined whether individuals perceived self-agency when they viewed a video of a hand grasping a wooden cylinder and whether the perception of self-agency correlated with simultaneous changes in oxy-hemoglobin in the parietal or the prefrontal cortical areas. All participants reported the perception o

Embodied prosthetic arm stabilizes body posture, while unembodied one perturbs it.

Senses of ownership (this arm belongs to me) and agency (I am controlling this arm) originate from sensorimotor system. External objects can be integrated into the sensorimotor system following long-term use, and recognized as one's own body. We examined how an (un)embodied prosthetic arm modulates whole-body control, and assessed the components of prosthetic embodiment. Nine unilateral upper-limb amputees participated. Four frequently used their prosthetic arm, while the others rarely did. Their postural sway was measured during quiet standing with or without their prosthesis. The frequent us

"Finding my own identity": a qualitative metasynthesis of adult anorexia nervosa treatment experiences.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this metasynthesis was to explore adult anorexia nervosa (AN) treatment experiences, including facilitators and barriers to treatment engagement and ways that questions of identity and personal agency were negotiated in treatment contexts. METHODS: From 14 qualitative studies that met the search criteria, this thematic synthesis analyzed the sensitized concept of identity in the participants' experiences of AN treatments, including their sense of personal agency, and implications for their recovery. The study was registered with Prospero (ID: CRD42018089259) and is repo

Neurology of volition.

Neurological disorders of volition may be characterized by deficits in willing and/or agency. When we move our bodies through space, it is the sense that we intended to move (willing) and that our actions were a consequence of this intention (self-agency) that gives us the sense of voluntariness and a general feeling of being "in control." While it is possible to have movements that share executive machinery ordinarily used for voluntary movement but lack a sense of voluntariness, such as psychogenic movement disorders, it is also possible to claim volition for presumed involuntary movements (

Sensory Attenuation Assessed by Sensory Evoked Potentials in Functional Movement Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Functional (psychogenic) movement disorders (FMD) have features associated with voluntary movement (e.g. distractibility) but patients report movements to be out of their control. One explanation for this phenomenon is that sense of agency for movement is impaired. The phenomenon of reduction in the intensity of sensory experience when movement is self-generated and a reduction in sensory evoked potentials (SEPs) amplitude at the onset of self-paced movement (sensory attenuation) have been linked to sense of agency for movement. METHODS: We compared amplitude of SEPs from median n

Neurology of widely embedded free will.

Free will is classically attributed to the prefrontal cortex. In clinical neurology, prefrontal lesions have consistently been shown to cause impairment of internally driven action and increased reflex-like behaviour. Recently, parietal contributions to both free selection at early stages of sensorimotor transformations and perception of specifically self-intended movements were demonstrated in the healthy brain. Such findings generated the concept that 'free will' is not a function restricted to the prefrontal cortex but is more widely embedded in the brain, indeed including the parietal cort

The effect of experimenter identification on (dis)obedience and its mechanisms.

Recent studies following Milgram's seminal experiment have provided insights into what neural, psychological, and contextual factors influence disobedience to immoral orders. According to the engaged followership model, greater identification with the experimenter leads to greater obedience. However, such results were not always replicated. It remains unclear how identifying with the person giving orders modulates (dis)obedience and related mechanisms. Therefore, the current study focussed on neurocognitive mechanisms and cultural factors related to identification with the experimenter to expl

AI-driven adaptive feedback and EFL writing performance: The roles of engagement, metacognition, and epistemic agency in a cross-linguistic context.

This study investigates the role of AI-driven adaptive feedback systems in enhancing feedback engagement, metacognitive strategies, epistemic agency, and writing performance among Saudi EFL learners. Adopting a cross-linguistic perspective, this study examined the impact of feedback provided in both Arabic (L1) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. A quantitative predictive research design was employed utilising Structural Equation Modelling to test the hypothesised relationships among the study variables. The sample comprised 1049 Saudi university EFL learners from various institu

Politicising Recovery: Why Early Intervention Must Move Beyond the Imperative of Functioning.

AIM: To articulate the politicisation of recovery as a conceptual and clinical framework for early intervention in psychosis and to argue why the field must move beyond the imperative of functioning. OBSERVATION: Early intervention for ultra-high-risk states and first-episode psychosis has improved symptomatic outcomes, yet a persistent gap remains between remission and functional recovery, while social and environmental determinants shape both onset and course. This gap partly reflects an implicitly autoplastic model of recovery, helping young people adjust to social conditions that remain u

Agency in avoidant personality disorder: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is a highly prevalent personality disorder, especially in clinical settings, yet scarcely researched. People diagnosed with AvPD have severe impairments in functioning and suffer greatly, yet we still lack meta-analytic evidence for therapy and only a few RCTs are conducted. Patient factors are the most important for outcome in therapy, in general. Lack of agency might be a core deficit in people diagnosed with AvPD. Their conditions might be improved if we understand their agency better. We review previous research regarding psychological mecha

Movement speed of an autonomous prosthetic limb shapes embodiment, usability and robotic social attributes in virtual reality.

Autonomous robotic prostheses can aid individuals with limb loss regain functionality and near-normal appearance. However, to psychologically integrate such limbs into one's body image, it is necessary to understand how movement characteristics, such as movement speed, affect the sense of embodiment. Using a VR simulation, we investigated how the speed of autonomous lower-arm movements affects embodiment and user-perception. Nineteen healthy participants embodied an amputated virtual avatar with a prosthetic lower left-arm moving autonomously at six different speeds following minimum-jerk traj

Loss of the sense of self-ownership for perceptions of objects in a case of right inferior temporal, parieto-occipital and precentral hypometabolism.

Philosophers define the 'minimal self' as the immediate awareness of being the agent and owner of one's actions and perceptions. Here, we describe a patient with a selective loss of one part of this 'minimal self', namely the immediate sense of self-ownership for perceptions of objects. In contrast, his sense of self-ownership for body perceptions and for self-agency during actions remained intact. 18-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography revealed predominantly right inferior temporal hypometabolism in comparison with healthy controls (parahippocampal and fusiform gyri). In addition,

A systematic review of personality-related factors associated with autonomy-connectedness in functional neurological disorder.

UNLABELLED: Preliminary evidence suggests that individuals with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) may exhibit reduced autonomy-connectedness, a psychological construct referring to the capacity to remain connected with one's own needs and emotions while maintaining meaningful relationships with others. Autonomy-connectedness consists of three interrelated dimensions: self-awareness, sensitivity to others, and the capacity to manage new situations. Although autonomy-connectedness itself has not yet been directly investigated in FND populations, several psychological characteristics associa

The Self and alien self in psyche and soma.

This paper compares presentations of disorders of the sense of body ownership and agency from psychoanalytic and neurological perspectives to demonstrate similarities in symptomatology proposing these similarities arise from adjustments in Friston's generative model of self-organization and selfhood. The implications for the analytic model of the Self, for clinical practice and for neuroscience research are considered. Patients with narcissistic disorders use projective defences resulting in a disordered sense of what belongs to whom. This applies to mind and body of self and other and is cent

Giving AI agents a sense of control facilitates reinforcement learning in multitasking scenarios.

Having to control multiple tasks in parallel poses challenges for humans and artificial agents alike. In artificial intelligence, specific forms of reinforcement learning (RL), most notably hierarchical and model-based RL, have shown promising results in scenarios where tasks or skills need to be switched adaptively. However, RL agents still encounter difficulties when faced with serial multitasking that involves switching control between continuously running subtasks, such as changing the radio station while driving in traffic. Inspired by human cognitive processes, we hypothesize that mainta
