Active Rejection of Non-Host Plants Across Families in Papilio xuthus Revealed by Tarsal Multi-Feature Spike Sorting.

Herbivorous insects must identify suitable host plants for egg-laying and reliably reject unsuitable ones, but whether non-host plants are actively rejected through deterrent cues, or simply fail to trigger host-recognition signals, remains unclear. We addressed this question in the swallowtail butterfly Papilio xuthus by combining oviposition behavior trials with electrophysiological recordings from taste sensilla on the female forelegs. Females primed with a Citrus (host plant) extract laid eggs on a plain water control 51.5% of the time, providing an operational post-priming baseline for ov

Occupational Exposure of Forest Workers to the Urticating Setae of the Pine Processionary Moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa.

The larvae of the pine processionary moth are a threat to public health because they produce detachable setae that are about 200 µm long and 6 µm wide, reaching a total number of up to 1 million per mature individual. The setae are intended to be released to protect the larvae from predators but become a public health issue when in contact with humans and warm-blooded animals. Symptoms associated with the setae are typically urticaria and local swelling erythema, although edema of the skin, conjunctivitis or respiratory mucosa may occur. Occupational exposure concerns mainly forest workers but

Functional morphology of the mouthparts in the scorpionfly Sinopanorpa tincta (Mecoptera: Panorpidae).

The feeding mechanism of insects can be deduced from the morphology of their mouthparts. The mouthpart morphology of the scorpionfly Sinopanorpa tincta (Navás) was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The mandibulate mouthparts of S. tincta are situated at the distal end of the rostrum, which is formed from the elongation of clypeus and subgenae. The blade-shaped mandible terminates in two inwardly curved sharp teeth. The paired maxillae each consist of a triangular cardo, an elongated stipes, a hirsute galea, a spiny lacinia, and a five-segmented palpus. Rows-arranged cl

Projections of male-specific receptor neurons in the antennal lobe of the Oriental tobacco budworm moth, Helicoverpa assulta: a unique glomerular organization among related species.

The macroglomerular complex in the primary olfactory center of male moths receives information from numerous pheromone-detecting receptor neurons housed in specific sensilla located on the antennae. We investigated the functional organization of the three glomeruli constituting this complex in Helicoverpa assulta, a unique species among heliothine moths as concerns the composition of the pheromone blend. By tip recordings from the male-specific receptor neurons combined with cobalt-lysine stainings, the axon terminals in the brain were traced and subsequently reconstructed by camera lucida dra

A new genus of scutigerid centipede from southern South America with the description of two new species and an updated molecular phylogeny of the myriapod order Scutigeromorpha (Myriapoda: Chilopoda).

Scutigeromorph centipedes are conspicuous, yet often ignored myriapods for which little work has been conducted in southern South America. After examining recent and museum collections from Chile and Argentina, two new species of generic uncertainty were identified. A new genus of scutigerid centipede, Edgethreua , is therefore described with two new species, E. chilensis from Central Chile (type species of the genus) and E. goloboffi from Argentinian Patagonia. The new genus is characterised by the presence of scattered setiform bristles with short paired spines and the absence of simple spin

Synthesis and future challenges: the response of mosquitoes to host odours.

There is ample evidence that host seeking in mosquitoes is mediated by semiochemicals emanating from the host. Olfactory cues (kairomones) are detected through an intricate pathway, beginning with sensilla located on the antennae (odour) and palpi (CO2). Age and physiological state of the mosquito determine whether detection of kairomones results in a behavioural response. Only a few kairomones have been described so far. CO2 is a kairomone for most mosquito species and signifies the presence of a potential host because of its occurrence in the volatile emissions of all vertebrates. Other chem

Microscopic studies on the structure of microornamentation and adhesive setae in normal and regenerating tail scales of some geckos.

The present review summarizes recent information on the formation and fine structure of epidermal microornamentation and adhesive setae in scale pads of the tail in some arboreal geckos. The study utilizes transmission and scanning electron microscopy, in conjunction with immunolabeling, to detect the main proteins of the microornamentation, known as Corneous Beta Proteins. These are special small proteins with a central region containing beta-sheets that form most of the corneous material of scales and pads. These proteins are packed into long cords that form short spinulae or longer setae. I

Setal descriptions, locations, and abundances: Their impacts on decorating behaviors in the spider crab Libinia (Crustacea: Epialtidae).

The setal abundances and distributions of the spider crab Libinia are examined, using two species. These spider crabs decorate their bodies with environmental materials and camouflage from predators. These decorations attach to hooked setae, but other types setae are prevalent in body regions where decorations occur. Adult crabs undergo a terminal molt and lose the ability to regrow setae. Little is known about setal changes over the lifetime in these crabs and if hooked setae abundance decreases with age, resulting in a loss of camouflage strategy in larger individuals. The objective of this

Morphological Study of First Instar Elephant Stomach Bot Fly Larvae (Oestridae: Gasterophilinae: Cobboldia elephantis).

Cobboldia elephantis (Oestridae: Gasterophilinae) is an obligate parasite of the alimentary tract of the Asian elephant, causing gastric myiasis. Current knowledge of its first instar larval morphology has been limited to observations under light microscopy, significantly constraining our understanding of morphological evolution within the genus Cobboldia and the broader subfamily Gasterophilinae. In this study, we provided ultrastructural and three-dimensional characterizations of C. elephantis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) based on new

Scanning Electron Microscopy of Sand Flies of the Chagasi Series, Psychodopygus (Diptera: Psychodidae) Genus, Focusing on the Genitalia.

Males of cryptic or closely related species present great morphological variation in their genitalia, whereas females, such as those of the Chagasi Series of the Psychodopygus Mangabeira, 1941 genus, are more similar. Therefore, our aim was to study the fine structure of the male genitalia of five species of the Chagasi Series to better understand the variation in their morphology and its influence on the copulatory process. The sand fly species were captured in the following Brazilian states: Psychodopygus chagasi (Costa Lima, 1941) (Rondônia), Psychodopygus complexus (Mangabeira, 1941) (Toca

Developmental changes of the antenna and its neurons in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, with special regard to larval-pupal transformation.

The larval antenna of Bombyx mori has 13 sensilla and about 52 sensory neurons in its distal portion. The axons form two nerve cords which unite in the cranial hemocoel to supply the brain as the olfactory nerve. The antennal imaginal disc, which is a thick pseudostratified epithelium continuous with the antennal epidermis, thickens markedly during the 5th instar by rapid cell proliferation. At the prepupal stage cell proliferation ceases and the disc everts to form a large pupal antenna. Simultaneously, an extensive cell rearrangement occurs in the antennal epidermis and the disc tissue becom

Reverse and conventional chemical ecology approaches for the development of oviposition attractants for Culex mosquitoes.

Synthetic mosquito oviposition attractants are sorely needed for surveillance and control programs for Culex species, which are major vectors of pathogens causing various human diseases, including filariasis, encephalitis, and West Nile encephalomyelitis. We employed novel and conventional chemical ecology approaches to identify potential attractants, which were demonstrated in field tests to be effective for monitoring populations of Cx. p. quinquefasciatus in human dwellings. Immunohistochemistry studies showed that an odorant-binding protein from this species, CquiOBP1, is expressed in tric

Localization and Functional Analysis of the Smoothened Gene in Apis cerana cerana.

Smoothened (Smo) is a core component of the Hedgehog signaling pathway and plays an important role in insect tissue growth, but its function in honey bees remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the expression localization of AcerSmo in the antennae of Apis cerana cerana (A. c. cerana) and its impact on olfactory behavior using in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, RNA interference, transcriptome sequencing, and behavioral and electrophysiological techniques. The results showed that AcerSmo mRNA is expressed in the sensory neurons beneath trichoid and placoid sensilla, while the

Structure and position of receptors within scales bordering the toes of gekkonids.

In gekkonids, the scales bordering the toes or the adjacent tissue possess suberpidermal and intraepithelial receptors in addition to setae-bearing organs. The position of subepidermal lamellated corpuscles seems to be correlated with the size of the species. The larger the adult animal the more frequently is this type of receptor found laterally in the toe. This can be explained in connection with the vibration-sensitive function of lamellated receptors. Intraepithelial axon terminals were found close to the setae-bearing sensilla in one species only. They are surrounded by numerous tonofibri

Description of the male and the larva of Ixodes collaris Hornok, 2016 with drawings of all stages.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes collaris Hornok, 2016 is a recently discovered tick species associated with bats in Asia. This study provides the description of the male and the larva, as well as high quality drawings of all stages. METHODS: Ticks were collected from cave walls and bats in Phia Oac (Vietnam). DNA was extracted from one individual of each stage/sex, while another was morphometrically analysed. Based on two genetic markers, all ticks were identified as I. collaris. RESULTS: The male of I. collaris has long legs (i.e. the length of Haller's organ exceeds the maximum diameter of tarsus I), u

Evidence for a sexually selected function of the attachment system in bedbugs Cimex lectularius (Heteroptera, Cimicidae).

Attachment to surfaces is a major aspect of an animal's interaction with the environment. Consequently, shaping of the attachment system in relation to weight load and substrate is considered to have occurred mainly by natural selection. However, sexual selection may also be important because many animals attach to their partner during mating. The two hypotheses generate opposing predictions in species where males are smaller than females. Natural selection predicts that attachment ability will scale positively with load, and hence body size, and so will be larger in females than males. Sexual
