Intelligibility in Context Scale: Sensitivity and specificity in the Jamaican context.

The present study investigated the sensitivity and specificity of the English Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) and the ICS-Jamaican Creole (ICS-JC) translation with bilingual preschool-aged Jamaican children. Participants in this study were 262 English-Jamaican Creole simultaneous bilingual children (aged 3;3 to 6;3, M = 4;11, SD = 7.8). The ICS and ICS-JC were administered to parents in auditory form, rather than written form. Although recent evidence has demonstrated the validity and reliability of the ICS as an assessment tool in various languages, further data are needed to determine

Sensitivity and specificity of multichannel surface electromyography in diagnosing fecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of the neurocontrol of the external anal sphincter has long been restricted to investigating patients by invasive tools. Less invasive techniques have been regarded less suitable for diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to develop a surface electromyography-based algorithm to facilitate fecal incontinence diagnosis, and to assess its sensitivity and specificity. DESIGN: Data analysis from a single center prospective study. PATIENTS: All patients from colorectal surgery office were considered. They underwent a structured interview, a general physical and proctologic exami

Questioning the specificity and sensitivity of ELISA for bullous pemphigoid diagnosis.

The reported sensitivity and specificity of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for bullous pemphigoid (BP) diagnosis is approximately 87% and 98%, respectively. These statistics suggest that ELISA is a reliable diagnostic test; therefore, the use of ELISA for BP diagnosis has increased. We report the case of a man who was diagnosed with BP and was treated for 3 years based on a positive ELISA for IgG against BP180. After reevaluation, his revised diagnosis was not consistent with BP based on clinical presentation, histopathology, and direct immunofluorescence (DIF). Reviewing reports of

Sensitivity and Specificity of a Nurse Dysphagia Screen in Stroke Patients.

PURPOSE: To determine how well an institutionally developed nurse dysphagia screening tool correctly identified the presence (sensitivity) or absence (specificity) of dysphagia in patients following acute stroke. METHODS: A method-comparison design was used to compare results of the Nurse Dysphagia Screen to the dysphagia evaluation by a speech and language pathologist (SLP). Each newly diagnosed participant served as his or her control, with both dysphagia evaluations (nurse, SLP) occurring within 2 hours of each other. Sensitivity and specificity of the Nurse Dysphagia Screen was calculated

Sensitivity and specificity of BCG scar reading among HIV-infected children.

BCG scar has been used as an indicator of vaccination with BCG in the past, but the validity of scar among HIV-positive children is still unknown. The validity of BCG scar reading among such children was estimated, using three different gold standards. The sensitivity ranged from 81.3% (95%-CI: 78.0-84.2) to 91.6% (95%-CI: 88.4-94.0), when the gold standards were, respectively, information from the adult responsible for the child and the vaccination card. The specificity ranged from 90.5% (95% CI: 81.6-95.5) to 94.1% (95% CI: 87.7-97.4), when the gold standards were, respectively, the vaccinat

Increased sensitivity and specificity of Borrelia burgdorferi 16S ribosomal DNA detection.

The DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes extracted by ammonium hydroxide was used as the template for nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the species-specific 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA). The primers were those well known to be specific for signature sequence amplification of the B burgdorferi sensu lato 16S ribosomal RNA gene. The positive 293-base-pair nested PCR amplicon was subjected to routine direct automated Sanger sequencing. A 50-base sequence excised randomly from the sequencing electrophoretogram between the 2 nested PCR primer binding sites was sufficient for th

Sensitivity and specificity of recalled vasomotor symptoms in a multiethnic cohort.

Many epidemiologic studies include symptom checklists assessing recall of symptoms over a specified time period. Little research exists regarding the congruence of short-term symptom recall with daily self-reporting. The authors assessed the sensitivity and specificity of retrospective reporting of vasomotor symptoms using data from 567 participants in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (1997-2002). Daily assessments were considered the "gold standard" for comparison with retrospective vasomotor symptom reporting. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of sensitivity an

Sensitivity, specificity and other diagnostic measures with multiple sites per unit.

Medical researchers often study the performance of diagnostic tools. The performance of the diagnostic tool is evaluated by calculating sensitivity, specificity and similar measures. Sensitivity is defined as the probability of a positive diagnostic test in a patient with the illness or injury for which the test serves as a diagnostic tool. Specificity is the probability of a negative diagnostic test in a patient free of the disease or injury. For some conditions, the test is applied to several anatomic locations or at different times in a patient and each test can be positive or negative. The

Reticulin and endomysial antibodies in bullous diseases. Comparison of specificity and sensitivity.

Reticulin antibodies of IgG- and IgA-class and endomysial antibodies, which are of the IgA class, were studied by indirect immunofluorescence in 30 normal subjects, and in 45 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), 31 with pemphigoid, and 30 with pemphigus. Endomysial antibodies were present in 65% of patients with DH maintained on a normal diet and were absent in those on a gluten-free diet and in those with other diseases and in normal controls. Reticulin antibodies of the IgA class were disease specific for DH and occurred in only 25% of such patients. IgG-class reticulin antibodies, o

Sensitivity and specificity of hypoactivations and failure of de-activation in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Brain functional changes reported in schizophrenia include reduced prefrontal cortex activation (hypofrontality), increased frontal activation (hyperfrontality) and failure of de-activation in the medial frontal cortex. The relative importance of these changes is unestablished. METHODS: A 'discovery' sample of 32 schizophrenic patients and 32 controls was used to establish regions of altered activation and de-activation in the patients. The discriminatory power of these regions was examined using receiver-operator characteristics (ROC) analysis in two 'test' samples, one of 83 pat
