Epidemiology of Escherichia coli bacteraemia in England: results of an enhanced sentinel surveillance programme.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli causes more than one-third of the bacteraemia cases in England each year, and the incidence of these infections is increasing. AIM: To determine the underlying risk factors associated with E. coli bacteraemia. METHODS: A three-month enhanced sentinel surveillance study involving 35 National Health Service hospitals was undertaken in the winter of 2012/13 to collect risk factor information and further details on the underlying source of infection to augment data already collected by the English national surveillance programme. Antimicrobial susceptibility results

Performance of Syphilis Sentinel Surveillance in the context of endemic Treponematoses: experience from Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Use of treponemal tests to screen for syphilis (caused by Treponema pallidum pallidum) poses challenges with infection status classification, especially in settings where other treponemal infections are endemic. This study aimed to determine the validity of the syphilis surveillance testing strategy implemented since 2004 using two treponemal tests, and estimate the seroprevalence of active syphilis infection in Ghana where yaws (caused by Treponema pallidum pertenue) is endemic. METHODS: We retested sera from the 2007 HIV sentinel survey (HSS) using a traditional algorithm, quant

Resource-efficient surveillance of invasive plants using Sentinel-2 phenology and street view validation.

Invasive plants can undermine the ecological integrity and long-term benefits of urban greening. Yet municipal agencies often lack scalable tools for targeted surveillance. We evaluated a resource-efficient workflow in Lucknow, India, combining Sentinel-2 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series, MaxEnt modelling, field checks and Google Street View (GSV). Three invasive plants representing contrasting growth forms were selected: Neltuma juliflora (Sw.) Raf. (syn. Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC.; tree), Lantana camara L. (shrub) and Parthenium hysterophorus L. (herb). Monthly pre

Sentinel chicken surveillance reveals previously undetected circulation of West Nile virus in the Netherlands.

West Nile virus (WNV) was first detected in the Netherlands in 2020, with circulation observed in birds, mosquitoes, and humans in two geographical areas. Usutu virus (USUV) has been circulating in the Netherlands since 2016. Following the detection of WNV in the Netherlands, we investigated the possible use of petting zoos as urban sentinel sites to examine the extent of WNV and USUV circulation around the two WNV outbreak locations. Chickens at petting zoos and in backyards were sampled within a 15-kilometer radius of the confirmed WNV circulation areas at three timepoints over one year (202

Enhanced sentinel surveillance for hepatitis B infection in 200 counties in China, 2013-2016.

Hepatitis B infection is a major public health challenge in China. Clinicians report hepatitis B cases to the National Notifiable Disease Reporting System. A 2007 study found that only 35% of hepatitis B cases that had been reported as acute infections met a rigorous case definition of acute hepatitis B, implying overreporting of new-onset infections. To increase the accuracy of reported acute hepatitis B infections, in 2013, we initiated enhanced hepatitis B surveillance in 200 sentinel counties. We compared incidences and proportions of different stages of hepatitis B infection before and af

Sentinel Surveillance Detects Low Circulation of Vibrio cholerae Serotype Inaba in Haiti, 2011-2012.

Over 700,000 cases of cholera were reported in Haiti between October 2010 and February 2015. In November 2011, the Cuban Medical Team serving in Haiti established a laboratory-supported sentinel surveillance system for cholera in 10 public hospitals (one in each of Haiti's 10 departments), to estimate the proportion of hospitalized patients with cholera and detect emergence of new Vibrio cholerae serotypes. Each month, the first ten stool samples collected from patients admitted with acute watery diarrhea were studied in all hospitals involved. Surveillance system findings from November 1, 201

Sentinel Surveillance Contributes to Tracking Lyme Disease Spatiotemporal Risk Trends in Southern Quebec, Canada.

Lyme disease (LD) is a tick-borne disease which has been emerging in temperate areas in North America, Europe, and Asia. In Quebec, Canada, the number of human LD cases is increasing rapidly and thus surveillance of LD risk is a public health priority. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the ability of active sentinel surveillance to track spatiotemporal trends in LD risk. Using drag flannel data from 2015-2019, we calculated density of nymphal ticks (DON), an index of enzootic hazard, across the study region (southern Quebec). A Poisson regression model was used to explore the association bet
