In order to establish the in vivo specificity of the mineralocorticoid recognition system of the rat brain, we investigated the potencies of aldosterone (ALDO) and corticosterone (CORT) in suppressing salt intake in adrenalectomized (ADX) rats. Increasing doses of ALDO (25, 50 and 100 ng/h), administered by Alzet minipump, suppress salt intake in a two-bottle preference test. CORT in doses up to 50 micrograms/h failed to mimic this effect of ALDO or to block it. A 1-month-old girl child, who was found to have hydrocephalus on prenatal ultrasound, was postnatally evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain, which showed two classical findings of septo-optic dysplasia (SOD), namely optic nerve hypoplasia and absent septum pellucidum. Computerized tomographic scanning of the brain was performed in 26 infants with Infantile spasms. Majority of the patients, 18 (69%) had some abnormality. Little is known about the neuropathology of Cornelia de Lange syndrome. We report a unique type of cerebral malformation combined with Cornelia de Lange syndrome in a 5-year-old female child. At autopsy, the optic systems, hypothalamic nuclei, corpus callosum and cerebellar vermis were hypoplastic, and the septum pellucidum, fornix and anterior commissure were rudimentary.
