Quantity Matters: Children With Dyslexia Are Impaired in a Small, but Not Large, Number of Exposures During Implicit Repeated Sequence Learning.

PURPOSE: The present study investigated the onset of statistical learning and examined whether the number of exposures to a repeated sequence influences the learning performance of children with dyslexia on a serial reaction time task. METHOD: Three groups of children (29 with dyslexia, 29 age-matched controls, and 30 reading level-matched controls) were administered a serial reaction time task, and their statistical learning performances after a small and a large number of exposures (40 vs. 180 exposures) were recorded and compared. RESULTS: Children with dyslexia showed impaired statistica

What determines the impact of context on sequential action?

In the current study we build on earlier observations that memory-based sequential action is better in the original learning context than in other contexts. We examined whether changes in the perceptual context have differential impact across distinct processing phases (preparation versus execution of a motor chunk) within an ongoing movement sequence. Participants were trained on two discrete keying sequences, each of which was systematically presented in its own unique color during a practice session with either limited or extended practice. In a subsequent test session, sequences were perfo

Phonological similarity neighborhoods and children's short-term memory: typical development and dyslexia.

In this article, we explore whether structural characteristics of the phonological lexicon affect serial recall in typically developing and dyslexic children. Recent work has emphasized the importance of long-term phonological representations in supporting short-term memory performance. This occurs via redintegration (reconstruction) processes, which show significant neighborhood density effects in adults. We assessed whether serial recall in children was affected by neighborhood density in word and nonword tasks. Furthermore, we compared dyslexic children with typically developing children of

Procedural learning in Tourette syndrome, ADHD, and comorbid Tourette-ADHD: Evidence from a probabilistic sequence learning task.

Procedural memory, which is rooted in the basal ganglia, plays an important role in the implicit learning of motor and cognitive skills. Few studies have examined procedural learning in either Tourette syndrome (TS) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), despite basal ganglia abnormalities in both of these neurodevelopmental disorders. We aimed to assess procedural learning in children with TS (n=13), ADHD (n=22), and comorbid TS-ADHD (n=20), as well as in typically developing children (n=21). Procedural learning was measured with a well-studied implicit probabilistic sequence lea

Resistance to change within heterogeneous response sequences.

Three experiments investigated how instrumental and Pavlovian contingencies contribute to resistance to change (RTC) in different ordinal response positions within heterogeneous response sequences in pigeons. RTC in the initial and terminal response positions of a three-response sequence were compared in Experiment 1, which presented three colored key lights in succession in each trial; and in Experiment 2, which severely degraded Pavlovian contingencies by presenting the lights simultaneously at each ordinal position. Experiment 3 eliminated the instrumental contingency in a high-order sign-t

Evidence for a specific impairment of serial order short-term memory in dyslexic children.

In order to better understand the nature of verbal short-term memory (STM) deficits in dyslexic children, the present study used the distinction between item and serial order retention capacities in STM tasks. According to recent STM models, storage of verbal item information depends very directly upon the richness of underlying phonological and semantic representations. On the other hand, storage of serial order information appears to reflect a language-independent system. Hence, if there is a fundamental STM deficit in dyslexia that is not to be explained only by the poor phonological proces

Response Time Modulates the Relationship Between Implicit Learning and Motor Ability in Children With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Preliminary Study.

Difficulty with implicit learning plays an important role in the symptomology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, findings in motor learning are inconsistent. This study evaluated implicit sequence learning and its relationship with motor ability in children with and without ASD. We adopted a classic serial reaction time task with a retention task and three awareness tests. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children was administered to assess children's motor ability. Significant learning differences between children with and without ASD were only found in retention but not immediate

Serial and semantic encoding of lists of words in schizophrenia patients with visual hallucinations.

Previous research has suggested that visual hallucinations in schizophrenia are associated with abnormal salience of visual mental images. Since visual imagery is used as a mnemonic strategy to learn lists of words, increased visual imagery might impede the other commonly used strategies of serial and semantic encoding. We had previously published data on the serial and semantic strategies implemented by patients when learning lists of concrete words with different levels of semantic organisation (Brébion et al., 2004). In this paper we present a re-analysis of these data, aiming at investigat

Media consumption and self-perceived multilingual identity in short-video vlog-assisted informal digital language learning.

BACKGROUND: Short video vlogs have become a prominent site of informal digital language learning, yet most research has emphasized skills, motivation, and willingness to communicate, with comparatively little attention to social affective and identity related self-perceptions. This study examined how short video vlog assisted informal digital language learning is associated with self-perceived multilingual identity, whether social presence and learning engagement are modeled as serial intermediate variables, and whether digital literacy conditions these associations. METHODS: A cross sectiona

Do children with developmental dyslexia have an implicit learning deficit?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of specific types of tasks on the efficiency of implicit procedural learning in the presence of developmental dyslexia (DD). METHODS: Sixteen children with DD (mean (SD) age 11.6 (1.4) years) and 16 matched normal reader controls (mean age 11.4 (1.9) years) were administered two tests (the Serial Reaction Time test and the Mirror Drawing test) in which implicit knowledge was gradually acquired across multiple trials. Although both tests analyse implicit learning abilities, they tap different competencies. The Serial Reaction

Serial position effects are sensitive predictors of conversion from MCI to Alzheimer's disease dementia.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the predictive strength of established cognitive variables for progression to Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) varies depending on time to conversion. We investigated which cognitive variables were best predictors, and which of these variables remained predictive for patients with longer times to conversion. METHODS: Seventy-five participants with MCI were assessed on measures of learning, memory, language, and executive function. Relative predictive strengths of these measures were analyzed using Cox regression models.

Neural Correlates of Visuomotor Learning in Autism.

Motor impairments are prevalent in children with autism spectrum disorder. The Serial Reaction Time Task, a well-established visuomotor sequence learning probe, has produced inconsistent behavioral findings in individuals with autism. Moreover, it remains unclear how underlying neural processes for visuomotor learning in children with autism compare to processes for typically developing children. Neural activity differences were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging during a modified version of the Serial Reaction Time Task in children with and without autism. Though there was n

Implicit sequence learning in young people with Tourette syndrome with and without co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Impaired habit-learning has been proposed to underlie the tic symptoms of Tourette syndrome (TS). However, accounts differ in terms of how habit-learning is altered in TS, with some authors proposing habit formation is impaired due to a deficient 'chunking' mechanism, and others proposing habit-learning is overactive and tics reflect hyperlearned behaviours. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently co-occurs with TS and is known to affect cognitive function in young people with co-occurring TS and ADHD (TS + ADHD). It is unclear, however, how co-occurring ADHD symptoms affect

Memory for what it is and memory for what it means: a single case of Korsakoff's amnesia.

A single case of Korsakoff's syndrome, showing classic circumscribed amnesia on traditional neuropsychological tests, performed a number of learning tasks previously used in primates to demonstrate the different anatomical basis of memory systems used to learn about the properties of objects or to learn about rules of responding. The patient (CJ) performed in a manner very similar to lesioned monkeys in that he could learn evaluative tasks (e.g. a red object is nice), but not rule based tasks (e.g. a red object means go left). In consequence CJ learned an object discrimination task in a manner

Order short-term memory is not impaired in dyslexia and does not affect orthographic learning.

This article reports two studies that investigate short-term memory (STM) deficits in dyslexic children and explores the relationship between STM and reading acquisition. In the first experiment, 36 dyslexic children and 61 control children performed an item STM task and a serial order STM task. The results of this experiment show that dyslexic children do not suffer from a specific serial order STM deficit. In addition, the results demonstrate that phonological processing skills are as closely related to both item STM and serial order STM. However, non-verbal intelligence was more strongly in

Rapid sequential processing in dyslexic and ordinary readers.

42 dyslexic and 42 ordinary readers were given a rapid sequential short-term memory task using materials adapted from the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities Visual Sequential Memory subset. Dyslexic readers performed at a similar level to ordinary readers. In Study 2, the same readers were given a 10-piece form board to complete as quickly as possible. Dyslexic readers were significantly slower on this task. Since short-term memory was not a feature of the second task, it was reasoned that short-term memory problems were unlikely to be a feature of dyslexic's performances on rapid seq

Visual Statistical Learning With Stimuli Presented Sequentially Across Space and Time in Deaf and Hearing Adults.

This study investigated visual statistical learning (VSL) in 24 deaf signers and 24 hearing non-signers. Previous research with hearing individuals suggests that SL mechanisms support literacy. Our first goal was to assess whether VSL was associated with reading ability in deaf individuals, and whether this relation was sustained by a link between VSL and sign language skill. Our second goal was to test the Auditory Scaffolding Hypothesis, which makes the prediction that deaf people should be impaired in sequential processing tasks. For the VSL task, we adopted a modified version of the triple

Memory performance of children with dyslexia: a comparative analysis of theoretical perspectives.

This study examined the memory performance of children with reading disabilities (RD) using methodology representative of three theoretical perspectives on RD subtypes: the phonological deficit, dual route, and phonological-core variable-difference models. Analyses compared the serial memory, verbal learning, and abstract visual-spatial memory performance of 45 children with RD to that of chronological-age (CA)- and reading-level (RL)-matched controls, using subtype identification methods from each of the theoretical models to classify children with RD. Phonological deficit and dual route comp

Effects of target probability and memory demands on the vigilance of adults with and without mental retardation.

The vigilance of young adults with mild mental retardation and without mental retardation was compared in two experiments in which observers performed two memory demanding, cognitively based, 60-minute tests. In Experiment 1, target probability was 5% or 30% with a 1.5-second event rate. Detection by observers with mental retardation declined more rapidly than did that of observers without mental retardation in both target probability conditions; further, their response criterion became increasingly more conservative. In Experiment 2, target probability was 10% or 30% with an 8-second event ra

Naming speed deficits in reading disability: multiple measures of a singular process.

Speed of word identification is important in the theories of reading proposed by La Berge and Samuels (1974) and Perfetti (1985), and is substantially correlated with reading skill. However, there is controversy about whether disabled readers have a speed deficit that is restricted to the identification of printed words, or if instead, they have a more general speed deficit in retrieving names of even single digits. To investigate this issue, poor and average readers (N = 43) in grade 2 were assessed on several indices of speed of digit and letter naming, using both continuous-list and discret
