Necrotizing fasciitis is a devastating inflammatory infection requiring emergent medical treatment and surgical intervention. Even with timely management, the mortality rate of necrotizing fasciitis approaches 25%. The causative bacteria invade fascial planes and express toxins that advance rapidly. Here, we document a rare case of necrotizing fasciitis from Serratia marcescens infection. Serratia marcescens is capable of inducing a necrotizing inflammatory cascade mediated by extracellular cytotoxin and lipase. In this case report, a 90-year-old man presented to our emergency department from

Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic organism that can commonly cause respiratory tract infections in immunocompromised individuals. It has also been shown to cause urinary tract infections and soft tissue infections. It has several virulence factors including fimbriae-like adhesions that allow for surface attachment and biofilm formation to increase the likelihood of infections in humans. However, it has rarely been shown to cause infective endocarditis but has an increased mortality compared to the usual microbial agents associated with it (Staphylococcus and Streptococcus). Therefore, a

The cases of human infections caused by Serratia fonticola are relatively rare. The few cases that have been reported primarily describe skin and soft tissue, urinary, and biliary tract infections. We describe a case of a 59-year-old man with infected bilateral lower extremity wounds who developed endocarditis due to S fonticola confirmed with transesophageal echocardiogram. The patient was treated with 6 weeks of antibiotic therapy and had an uneventful recovery. After a thorough review of the literature using PubMed and Google Scholar, we concluded that this is the first reported case of end

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a progressive inflammatory infection of the fascia that is often aggressive and advances insidiously. NF can be preceded by traumatic injury or surgical intervention or may occur spontaneously. Here, we describe a patient who presented with monomicrobial subacute necrotizing fasciitis due to Serratia marcescens. Dermatology was consulted at the local hospital for suspected cellulitis with no resolution using appropriate antibiotics. Our patient failed to show improvement with antibiotic treatment and experienced an above-the-knee amputation. We have also included

In this article, we present the first case of necrotizing fasciitis affecting the abdominal wall caused by Serratia marcescens and share results of a focused review of S. marcescens induced necrotizing fasciitis. Our patient underwent aorto-femoral bypass grafting for advanced peripheral vascular disease and presented 3 weeks postoperatively with pain, erythema and discharge from the incision site in the left lower abdominal wall and underwent multiple debridement of the affected area. Pathology of debrided tissue indicated extensive necrosis involving the adipose tissue, fascia and skeletal m

Efficacy of Serratia marcescens for pigment production and biological activity was investigated. Natural substrates like sweet potato, mahua flower extract (Madhuca latifolia L.), and sesam at different concentrations were taken. As a carbon source microorganism favored potato powder was followed by sesam and mannitol, and as nitrogen source casein hydrolysate was followed by yeast and malt extract. The effect of inorganic salts on pigment production was also studied. At final optimized composition of suitable carbon, nitrogen source, and trace materials and at suitable physiological condition

BACKGROUND: Cerebral abscesses are extremely rare in neonates. Serratia marcescens is an unusual cause of sepsis and neurological spread is especially ominous.
PURPOSE: To report the case of a 34-week neonate who developed this rare condition and to discuss diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
CASE REPORT: A 34-week male neonate sequentially developed respiratory distress syndrome, early sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis; later cultures revealed S. marcescens. After deterioration, a cerebral abscess became evident, which revealed S. marcescens. Clinical improvement ensued after high-dose

A 26 year old pregnant woman with antithrombin III deficiency developed recurrent septicaemia with Serratia marcescens. In spite of the administration of antibiotics, high grade fever persisted. She subsequently manifested lower abdominal pain, and spontaneous abortion occurred. After the abortion, she became completely afebrile. The amnion was turbid, and microscopic examination of the placenta showed haemorrhage and massive infiltration of neutrophils, suggestive of infectious chorioamnionitis. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis showed that isolates from the blood, urine, and vaginal discharge

The influence of salicylic acid on the permeability and susceptibility of Serratia marcescens to both nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin was studied, as well as the effect of salicylate on outer membrane proteins and lipopolysaccharide. As salicylic acid concentration increased, ciprofloxacin accumulation decreased with a concomitant, previously observed, reduction in the porin content of the outer membrane. Resistance to ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid was enhanced when bacteria grew in the presence of salicylic acid.

Serratia ficaria was first described in 1979 as part of the fig tree ecosystem (P.A.D. Grimont, F. Grimont, and M. P. Starr, Curr. Microbiol. 2:277-282, 1979). Since then, it has been isolated from clinical specimens from a few human patients (C. Bollet, J. Freney, P. de Micco, F. Grimont, and P.A.D. Grimont, Méd. Mal. Infect. 20:97-100, 1990; J.A. A 2-year-old female Bengal cat was referred for acute right forelimb lameness one month after ovariectomy. Physical examination revealed multifocal pain on bone palpation and fever. Radiographs showed mixed lytic-proliferative polyostotic diaphyseal osteopathy of multiple bone segments. Histopathologic evaluation of bone biopsies showed severe chronic pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis and multidrug-resistant Serratia marcescens was cultured. Antibiotic therapy with piperacillin-tazobactam was administered for 60 days, based on susceptibility testing. Lameness and bone pain resolved within 15 days

Several Serratia species are widely distributed in nature, but Serratia marcescens is the only species frequently isolated in hospitals. This pathogen is mainly responsible for nosocomial infection, mostly in immunocompromised hosts. A 26-year-old woman with a twin pregnancy, regularly controlled, was hospitalized at 24 + 5 weeks of gestation due to scant vaginal bleeding, lower abdominal pain, and body temperature up to 37.5°C. Gynecological examination revealed bleeding accompanied by dilatation of the cervix. The laboratory analyses revealed leukocytosis with elevated C-reactive protein (CR

OBJECTIVE: Establishment of a male BALB/c mouse model to study the role of sperm impairing S. marcescens on mouse reproductive potential. The current study can add to use of reliable animal models to provide a noteworthy evidence for the microbial cause of infertility.
METHODS: The mice in the test groups II, III, IV were intraperitoneally administered with different doses (104, 106 or 108 cfu) of S. marcescens whereas, group I serving as control, received PBS, for 10 consecutive days. The groups were evaluated for any change in body weight, tissue somatic index (%), seminal parameters and hi

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are better documented in developed than in developing countries. There are emerging reports regarding the high frequency of HAIs in developing countries. We aimed to report an outbreak of an HAI caused by Serratia liquefaciens at a rural health center in The Gambia.
METHODOLOGY: Following an abrupt increase in the isolation of S. liquefaciens in clinical samples, laboratory and clinical consumables, as well as staff, were screened for contamination with S. liquefaciens. Conventional microbiological techniques and biochemical identification

INTRODUCTION: There are various pathogens reported for osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is bone infection which produces pain and fever, also threatens bone instability. It can lead to nonunion. The purpose of this report was to describe a case with union delay of the tibia due to serratia marcescens osteomyelitis. Serratia marcescens is an unexpected pathogen for subacute osteomyelitis in adolescence. Because of difficulty of diagnosis, treatment can be delayed or the situation can cause complications like nonunion or loss of function.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: Serratia marcescens is an unexpected p
