Implementation Study of "Building Resilience," Including Positive Psychology Interventions and Positive Emotion Regulation Training in Patients With Severe Mental Illness in an Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Mental Health Setting: An Exploratory Clinical Trial.

Deficits in positive emotion regulation skills may be an important factor in the development and maintenance of anxiety and mood disorders. A treatment, which includes strategies to build and strengthen positive emotion regulation skills has been provided to patients primarily diagnosed with an anxiety and or mood disorder in an adult mental health outpatient service setting. To study the effects on positive and negative emotion, emotion regulation skills, emotional disorder symptoms, quality of life, and wellbeing during a new developed treatment. An exploratory clinical trial was used to con

Life events and depression in women: a structural equation model.

A non-recursive structural equation model designed to examine the reciprocal relationship between life event reports and depressive symptoms in women is presented. The model was fitted to data from a 2-year longitudinal study of life events and depression in a sample of women with 5-year-old children. The findings suggest that life event reports may be influenced by mental state; however, even when this tendency is taken into account, there is still a substantial relationship between life events and depressive symptoms in women. This indicates that it is unlikely that the life events/depressio

Automatic activation of self-discrepancies and emotional syndromes: when cognitive structures influence affect.

Different types of self-discrepancies are associated with different negative affects. Two studies were conducted to determine whether automatic activation of specific actual-self: self-guide mismatches, as cognitive structures, would induce distinct emotional states. Subjects possessing significant discrepancies between their actual self and either their ideal self-guide (attributes that someone wishes or hopes the person would possess) or their ought self-guide (attributes that someone believes the person has the duty or obligation to possess) responded verbally to an audiotape while "thinkin

Evaluation of the Pleasure Scale in the assessment of anhedonia in children.

The Pleasure Scale for Children, a measure developed to assess anhedonia in school-age children, was evaluated. Psychometric properties and concurrent validity of the scale were evaluated with 232 child psychiatric inpatient children (ages 6-13) and their parents. Based on prior research with adults, predictions were made that children with a diagnosis of major depression would evince greater anhedonia on the scale and that anhedonic children (low Pleasure Scale scores) would show a negative attributional style in relation to rewarding experiences. The results indicated that the Pleasure Scale

Improving the teaching of "correlation does not equal causation" in Introductory Psychology.

"Correlation does not equal causation" is perhaps the most familiar phrase to any student or instructor in an Introductory Psychology class. While short and pithy, we argue that this phrase and its variants can lead to confusion among students, who may incorrectly interpret it to mean that "correlation cannot mean causation." Unfortunately, this misinterpretation trades one type of reasoning error (incorrectly drawing a causal conclusion from a correlational study) for a separate type of reasoning error (incorrectly concluding there cannot be a causal relationship reflected in a correlational

Personality and psychopathology: a historical perspective.

The possible links between personality psychology and psychopathology are examined with the goal of understanding the constraints that set boundaries to the possible contributions of one to the other. The reciprocal nature of these contributions is described. The historical survey looks at the early concepts of the humors and temperament, at the concept of a general vulnerability to psychosis and deviance--represented by the 19th-century concept of degeneracy--and at later typologies arising from the work of Eysenck, Freud, Kretschmer, Pavlov, and Sheldon. The impact of current developments in

The perseverative cognition hypothesis: a review of worry, prolonged stress-related physiological activation, and health.

Perseverative cognition, as manifested in worry and rumination, is a common response to stress, but biopsychological models of stress and health have largely ignored it. These models have generally focused on physiological activation that occurs during stress and have insufficiently addressed effects that occur in anticipation of, or following, stressful events. We argue that perseverative cognition moderates the health consequences of stressors because it can prolong stress-related affective and physiological activation, both in advance of and following stressors. We review evidence that worr

Visual feedback and anticipatory hand orientation during infants' reaching.

Infants 5, 7, and 9 mo. of age were videorecorded while reaching for a dowel that either was stationary or changed orientation after initiation of a reach. Visual fixation and hand orientation were monitored throughout each reach, as was the efficiency with which infants contacted the stimulus. In reaching for the stationary stimulus, the 5-mo.-olds showed significantly poorer hand orientation adjustment throughout their reach than 9-mo.-olds. The 7-mo.-olds began a reach with the hand poorly oriented as did 5-mo.-olds, but just before object contact their performance matched that of the 9-mo.

An evaluation of length and end-phrase of visual analogue scales in dental pain.

Visual analogue scales (VAS) of different lengths (5, 10, 15 and 20 cm) and with different end-phrases (troublesome, miserable, intense, unbearable and worst pain imaginable) were used to record pain in 50 male and 50 female patients with pulpitis or pericoronitis. All 100 patients successfully completed the questionnaire. High correlation was found between the scores on all the scales. Scales of length 10 or 15 cm had the smallest measurement error. The scale with the end-phrase 'worst pain imaginable' was found to be the best choice for comparing present pain or worst pain between different

Expectations of improvement and attitudes to treatment processes in relation to outcome with four treatment methods for phobic disorders.

One hundred and three agora- or sociophobic women who were not suitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy filled in an inventory with questions pertaining to expectations as to improvement, and attitudes towards goal of treatment and function of the therapist. The patients received one of four randomly assigned types of outpatient treatment for 3 months. All patients received basal therapy in the form of medication, standardized information and self-exposure instructions. One group received this treatment only once a month (B). The others received in addition either therapist-directed prolong

Premature cognitive commitment.

Two experiments examined the effect that the conditions of initial exposure to information have on the "mindless" processing of that information and its subsequent use. It was hypothesized that the context of initial exposure to information limits its subsequent use. Information initially perceived as irrelevant may be uncritically accepted. If that information later becomes relevant, persons become victims of their premature cognitive commitments. In the first experiment, all subjects received information about perceptual deficits while the perceived relevance of that information was manipula

Phobic anxiety and irrational belief systems.

In a test of the hypothesis that irrational thinking is associated with phobic anxiety, the Rational Behavior Inventory and the Fear Survey Schedule were administered to 128 undergraduates. Although a statistically significant correlation between irrationality and phobic anxiety was found, the result appears to have little clinical meaning. Other evidence is cited which suggests that rational emotive therapy is best suited for the treatment of generalized anxiety, whereas deconditioning treatments are appropriate for most cases of phobic anxiety.

Carving stories at their natural joints.

Over the past three decades, psychology has documented the recurrence of specific themes in stories across cultures (e.g., love, alliances, monsters, and imaginary worlds) and linked them to identifiable motivational mechanisms (e.g., mate choice, cooperation, threat detection, and exploration). Yet this body of work has remained fragmented, organized around individual themes rather than integrated into a unified account of what makes narrative content psychologically engaging. Here, we propose the Motivational-Ingredient Framework. We identify a set of motivational ingredients: core narrative

Differences between experienced and anticipatory distress.

Differences between distress ratings of anticipated and experienced life events were examined (N = 168). Results showed significant differences between perceived and experienced aversion across events predicting symptoms of stress, depression, anxiety, and somatic discomfort in occupational, social, and familial situations. Gender differences were also found. Women reported significantly greater ratings of distress than men. Results reinforce the use of experienced events in overall distress assessment for individual clients, bring to question the existence of anticipated or perceived stress,

Explanatory style and gambling: how pessimists respond to losing wagers.

Fifty-three patrons of a harness racing track completed two measures of explanatory style prior to an afternoon's races. One measure assessed general explanatory style, using bad events taken from the Attributional Style Questionnaire, and the other measure assessed betting-specific explanatory style, using bad events specific to harness race betting. Subjects then kept a diary during the first eight races. After each race, they reported how much they had bet, whether they had won or lost, the major cause of the outcome, their confidence about winning future bets, and whether they were ruminat

Interference of expectancy and attention demanding tasks on alcohol intoxication.

Seventy-nine undergraduate social drinkers were the subjects in two studies. Both studies had two experimental sessions and followed a blind design. The subjects in experiment I (expectancy manipulation) were informed they would certainly receive an alcoholic beverage in one session, while in the other one they were told the beverage possibly contained alcohol. Thus, the different expectancy on the beverage content was evaluated. The volunteers in experiment II (attention demanding tasks) were submitted to attention tests in one session and in another one they were not. Thus, the assumption th

[Uniqueness of certain structural personality prerequisites in schizophrenia].

The authors mark the following peculiarities of the fixated set in schizophrenia: inertness (in a continuous course); a lability (in acute manifestations of psychoses and in a recurrent course); a variability (in cases of child and adolescent schizophrenia). In terminal cases and in cases of apathic-aboulic syndrome the excitibility level is considerably lowered. The results of a study with the aid of TAT (Murray's Thematic Apperception Test and Rorschach's tests) also depend upon the age of the patients, the form and type of development and the stage of the disease.

Toward a decent learning theory: a structural-psychological framework for understanding students' appraisals of learning.

Research on learning has often focused on ability, motivation, self-regulation, and performance, but these approaches do not fully explain why students within the same educational system may appraise learning in markedly different ways. To address this gap, this article proposes Decent Learning Theory (DLT) to explain adolescents' perceived decent learning from a structural-psychological perspective. DLT draws on educational psychology, developmental psychology, the sociology of education, intersectionality theory, and the Psychology of Working Theory. It proposes that structural educational c
