Gender differences in brain development and in the prevalence of neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression have been reported. Gender differences in human brain might be related to patterns of gene expression. Microarray technology is one useful method for investigation of gene expression in brain. We investigated gene expression, cell types, and regional expression patterns of differentially expressed sex chromosome genes in brain. We profiled gene expression in male and female dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and cerebellum using the Affymetrix oligonucleotide m

Human male infertility is often related to chromosome abnormalities. In chromosomally normal infertile males, the rates of chromosome 21 and sex chromosome disomy in spermatozoa are increased. Higher incidences of trisomy 21 (seldom of paternal origin) and sex chromosome aneuploidy are also found. XXY and XYY patients produce increased numbers of XY, XX and YY spermatozoa, indicating an increased risk of production of XXY, XYY and XXX individuals. Since XXYs can reproduce using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), this could explain the slight increase of sex chromosome anomalies in ICSI s

OBJECTIVE: We present a case of X-Y translocation with male phenotype (46,XX testicular disorder of sex development) and review the literature.
METHODS: Disorders of sex development with mismatch of genetic, gonadal and phenotypic sex are quite rare, and some are due to genetic or chromosomal abnormalities. The karyotype was investigated by a cytogenetic study of peripheral blood (phytohemagglutinin-timulated lymphocyte culture over 72 hours). G-banding analysis of 25 metaphases showed a 46,XX chromosome constitution (46 chromosomes with XX sexual composition). Fluorescence in situ hybridizat

There are well-documented gender differences in the risk and severity of sleep disorders and associated comorbidities. While fundamental sex differences in sleep regulatory mechanisms may contribute to gender disparities, biological responses to sleep loss and stress may underlie many of the risks for sleep disorders in women and men. Some of these sex differences appear to be dependent on sex chromosome complement (XX or XY) and the organizational effects of reproductive hormones. Reproductive development plays a critical role in the ability of sex chromosomes and reproductive hormones to pro

Sex chromosome trisomies (SCT), including Klinefelter syndrome/XXY, Trisomy X, and XYY syndrome, occur in 1 of every 500 births. The past decades of research have resulted in a broadening of known associated medical comorbidities as well as advances in psychological research. This review summarizes what is known about early neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and medical manifestations in young children with SCT. We focus on recent research and unanswered questions related to the risk for neurodevelopmental disorders that commonly present in the first years of life and discuss the medical and endo

The 46,XX testicular disorder of sex development (46,XX testicular DSD) is a rare phenotype associated with disorder of the sex chromosomes. We describe the clinical, molecular, and cytogenetic findings of a 16- and a 30-year-old male patient with sex-determining region Y (SRY)-positive 46,XX testicular DSD. Chromosomal analysis revealed 46,XX karyotype. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) showed the SRY region translocated to the short arm of the X chromosome. The presence of the SRY gene was also confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The X chromosome inactivation (XCI) assay sh

PURPOSE: Multicolour FISH has been used for the preimplantation diagnosis of sex for X-linked disorders and to examine the chromosome constitution of early human embryos.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single blastomeres and whole embryos were spread using HCI and Tween 20. Multicolour FISH was performed using directly-labelled human DNA probes for chromosomes X, Y, and 1 in a two hour FISH procedure.
RESULTS: Four groups of chromosome arrangements have been found in human preimplantation embryos (i) normal, all nuclei uniformly diploid, (ii) diploid mosaics, majority of the nuclei diploid, with a s

Trisomy X is the most frequent sex chromosome anomaly in women, but it is often underdiagnosed postnatally because most patients do not show any clinical manifestation. It is estimated that only 10% of patients with trisomy X are diagnosed by clinical findings. Thus, it has been proposed that the clinical spectrum is not yet fully delimited, and additional uncommon or atypical clinical manifestations could be related to this entity. The present report describes a female carrying trisomy X but presenting atypical manifestations, including severe intellectual disability, short stature, thymus hy

The basal angle was measured on skull films in 252 patients with hormonal disorders and sex chromosome aberrations. In cases of hormonal disturbance the basal angle was normal. In patients with Turner's syndrome (45,X chromosomes) the basal angle was enlarged while in patients with Klinefelter's syndrome (47,XXY chromosomes) and in those with extra X or Y chromosomes it was definitely reduced. A close relationship exists between the sex chromosome number and the size of the basal angle.

INTRODUCTION: Male factor infertility concerns 7-10% of men and among these 40-60% remain unexplained.
SOURCES OF DATA: This review is based on recent published literature regarding the genetic causes of male infertility.
AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Screening for karyotype abnormalities, biallelic pathogenic variants in the CFTR gene and Y-chromosomal microdeletions have been routine in andrology practice for >20 years, explaining ~10% of infertility cases. Rare specific conditions, such as congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, disorders of sex development and defects of sperm morphology and mot

BACKGROUND: Early and intermediate serological screening cannot detect sex chromosome abnormalities. Currently, noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is the only procedure available for screening such disorders; however, its use is controversial.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 47,855 pregnant women underwent NIPT at our referral center from January 2014 to December 2020. Of the 314 patients with a positive NIPT indicating sex chromosome abnormalities, 260 were screened via karyotype analysis and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array after amniotic fluid extraction; 96 cases were confirmed

PREMISE: One evolutionary path from hermaphroditism to dioecy is via a gynodioecious intermediate. The evolution of dioecy may also coincide with the formation of sex chromosomes that possess sex-determining loci that are physically linked in a region of suppressed recombination. Dioecious papaya (Carica papaya) has an XY chromosome system, where the presence of a Y chromosome determines maleness. However, in cultivation, papaya is gynodioecious, due to the conversion of the male Y chromosome to a hermaphroditic Yh chromosome during its domestication.
METHODS: We investigated gene expression

Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs), including Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY), Turner syndrome (45,X), XYY syndrome, trisomy X (47,XXX), and rarer tetrasomies and pentasomies, affect approximately 1 in 400 births and are associated with a wide range of developmental, cognitive, and physical health outcomes. While clinical research on SCAs has expanded over the past two decades, it is unclear whether the populations included in these studies reflect the demographic diversity of those affected. Assessing representation is critical to ensuring research findings are generalizable and applicable to d

Sex differences in neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, and neurodegenerative disease susceptibility may arise from sex chromosome and hormonal influences on cell type-specific gene expression. We present a single-cell transcriptomic analysis of adult human cortex performed using 169 samples from 15 females and 15 males (age 26 to 78 years) across six regions selected according to their sex-biased volumes. Sex-based analysis identified the strongest differences in the fusiform cortex, glia, and excitatory neurons and among sex-chromosome genes. More than 3000 genes showed sex-biased expression, in

Infertility affects about 15% of couples of childbearing age. About half of these cases can be attributed predominantly to a male factor, such as a quantitative or qualitative impairment in spermatogenesis. The first-line genetic screening for non-obstructive azoospermia is limited to karyotyping (to identify chromosome abnormalities) and Y chromosome microdeletions screening, with a view to explaining the spermatogenetic failure and evaluating the likelihood of sperm retrieval in a testicular biopsy. For patients with de la Chapelle syndrome (a 46,XX karyotype with the presence of SRY (Sex de
