Sex-specific risk factors for childhood wheeze and longitudinal phenotypes of wheeze.

BACKGROUND: Although sexual dimorphism in wheeze and asthma prevalence are well documented, sex-specific risk factors for wheeze and longitudinal wheeze phenotypes have not been well elucidated. OBJECTIVE: By using a large prebirth cohort, this study aimed to identify sex-specific risk factors for wheeze from birth through midchildhood and identify distinct longitudinal wheeze phenotypes and the sex-specific risk factors associated with these phenotypes. METHODS: Mothers reported child wheeze symptoms over the past year approximately yearly on 9 occasions starting at age 1 year. We identifie

Symptomatic human neurocysticercosis--age, sex and exposure factors relating with disease heterogeneity.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relevance of exposure and host biological factors in the heterogeneity of the clinical, radiological and inflammatory picture of neurocysticercosis (NCC). METHODS: 105 Mexican symptomatic NCC patients confirmed by imaging were studied before they received any specific treatment. The relationships studied were those between a) the patients' characteristics (gender, age and level of exposure), b) the type of clinical picture and c) the radiological and inflammatory characteristics of the disease (number, aspect, localization of the parasites, and CSF leukocyte counts)

Cervical human papillomavirus infections in commercial sex workers-risk factors and behaviours.

We have investigated the prevalence of, and risk factors for, cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in commercial sex workers (CSWs) and controls attending the same sexual health clinics in Sydney. A self-administered 'risk factor' questionnaire was completed and a Pap smear and a specimen for HPV detection and typing were taken. Results from the 288 CSWs and 266 controls were assessed by univariate and multivariate analyses. No significant difference in the rates of cervical HPV infection in CSWs (31.6%) and controls (24.4%) was found but HPV related cytological abnormalities were mor

Factors Associated With Early Resumption of Condomless Anal Sex Among Men Who Have Sex With Men After Rectal Chlamydia Treatment.

BACKGROUND: The resumption of sexual activity shortly after commencing treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is poorly described despite contributing to onward transmission. With azithromycin remaining an option for rectal Chlamydia trachomatis, resuming sex too early after treatment may contribute to antimicrobial resistance because of exposure of newly acquired STIs to subinhibitory concentrations. METHODS: Clinical and sexual behavioral data were collected from men participating in a trial assessing treatment efficacy for rectal chlamydia. Data were collected at recruitment

Transgender female youth and sex work: HIV risk and a comparison of life factors related to engagement in sex work.

This study examined the HIV risk behaviors and life experiences of 151 transgender female youth, ages 15-24, in Los Angeles and Chicago. Descriptive analyses and logistic regression modeling were used to identify life factors associated with ever having engaged in sex work. Sixty-seven percent of participants had ever engaged in sex work and 19% self-reported being HIV positive. Many factors were significantly associated with sex work for this sample population. A final multivariate logistic regression model found that lower education status, homelessness, use of street drugs, and perceived so

Scientific Symposium: Biological Sex as a Factor in Epilepsy Research and Treatment.

Epilepsy disorders differ depending on sex, gender and hormonal status. This can change treatment efficacy and remains an understudied topic in epilepsy, despite several public health initiatives promoting the inclusion of female subjects in clinical and preclinical research over the last 40 years. Here, we summarize research presented at the 2025 American Epilepsy Meeting Scientific Symposium that described current knowledge in sex differences in epilepsy, including X chromosome-dependent and -independent genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, and discussed how these advances may impact epilepsy

Sex differences in modifiable risk factors of dementia and their associations with cognition.

BACKGROUND: Women have a greater lifetime risk of developing dementia. Despite clear sex differences, studies investigating modifiable dementia risk factors often overlook differences between sexes and age. This study examined sex and age differences in the prevalence of modifiable dementia risk factors and their associations with cognition. METHODS: Participants were from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative cohort study. Thirteen risk factors were examined, including education, hearing loss, cholesterol, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, smoking, hypertensio

Monkeypox and sex: Sexual orientations and encounters are key factors to consider.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The monkeypox (mpox) virus was endemic to some African countries that have recently spread worldwide creating multicountry outbreaks outside of Africa. This most current mpox outbreak is caused by a variety of factors. However, there are some conflicting ideas and pejorative claims about this. Therefore, we conducted this narrative review to highlight the associations of mpox infection with sexual orientations and encounters and to break the misconception about mpox. METHODS: To find pertinent information and data, we searched Google, Google Scholar, and PubMed. The resul

Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor and Sex Hormone-Responsive Cancers.

Oestrogens and androgens play important roles in normal and cancerous tissue and have been shown to negatively regulate pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) expression in sex hormone-responsive tumours. PEDF suppresses tumour growth and its downregulation by oestrogen is implicated in tumorigenesis, metastasis, and progression. PEDF expression is reduced in cancerous tissue of the prostate, breast, ovary, and endometrium compared to their normal tissue counterparts, with a link between PEDF downregulation and sex hormone signalling observed in pre-clinical studies. PEDF reduces growth and

Sex differences in risk factors for stroke in patients with hypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia.

Data on the sex-specific differences in risk of stroke among patients with H-type hypertension are limited. We aimed to analyze interactions between sex and other risk factors on stroke, including the sex-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) interaction. A retrospective analysis of baseline data from 2040 patients with hypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) included demographic characteristics, biomarkers, history of chronic diseases and lifestyle factors. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used to investigate the C677T polymorphism of MT

Sleep apnea as a possible factor contributing to aggression in sex offenders.

Sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), are often unrecognized and undertreated. A disruption in normal sleep may be associated with increased irritability and aggression. To elucidate further the impact of OSA on hostility of forensic patients, we performed a retrospective chart review of 10 consecutive outpatient sex offenders who were diagnosed with OSA and treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire was compared pre- and posttreatment. Following treatment, the total Buss-Perry score was significantly lower, with lower sco

Sex as a factor in conversion from laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Although laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the standard treatment for symptomatic gallbladder diseases, conversion to open surgery is required in a substantial proportion of patients. In this study, we attempted to clarify whether male sex carries an increased risk for conversion to open surgery during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: This study comprised 80 patients (41 females, 39 males) with symptomatic gallbladder stones. Average age was 39.2 years, and all female patients were of reproductive age. Patients were excluded from the study if they had acute cholecystit

[Factors contributing to the difference of hair mercury concentrations between the sexes].

Scalp hair samples were collected by mail from 97 married couples who were living in several places in Okinawa-prefecture and supposedly had no specific exposure to mercury compounds. They were selectively analysed for organic and inorganic mercury content and the difference of hair mercury concentration between the sexes was discussed in relation to the frequency of fish intake, fish species, drinking habits and permanent-wave hair treatment. Results obtained were as follows: 1) The increase in hair levels of organic and inorganic mercury concentrations was roughly proportional to the dietary

The effect of nutritional factors on sex hormone levels in male twins.

Dietary intake has been hypothesized as being associated with several hormonally related cancers including prostate, breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancer. Because diet may affect hormones directly, it is logical to examine the effects of dietary factors on hormone production and levels. Therefore, a set of 72 male MZ and 83 male DZ twin pairs was ascertained from the Utah birth certificates. A quantitative food frequency questionnaire was administered and blood samples were drawn for hormonal assays. Heritability estimates for hormonal levels were calculated indicating a range from no herit

Mosaic character of spermatogenesis in carriers of the sex reversed factor in the mouse.

The "sex reversed" factor leads to development of XX male mice. It is inherited on one of the autosomes and transmitted through XY-Sxr carrier males. In the latter, spermatogenesis is studied under the aspect of gene dosis effects produced by the presence of the Sxr factor in addition to the Y chromosome. A mosaic pattern of normal and defective spermatogenesis is described. The defective areas are characterized by failure in late pachytene and metaphase I, and by appearance of spermatids with very large nuclei which degenerate in cap phase. The defects correspond to those observed in X0-Sxr s

Underreporting of Sex-Specific Findings in Risk Factors for Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Women are overrepresented in the unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA) population, with an overall two-thirds of patients being female. The reasons behind this female preponderance are still unclear. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of clinical risk factors for UIA, with a specific aim of assessing whether these risk factor associations are sex-dependent. METHODS: We systematically searched 5 electronic medical databases for all relevant literature up to March 2024. Cohort and case-control studies reporting on the lifestyle factors smoking, alcohol use

Sex-specific factors and APOEε4 genotype alter functional connectivity at middle age.

Cognitive aging is influenced by sex and sex-specific factors. Indeed, research has shown that parity (pregnancy and parenthood) uniquely alters biomarkers of brain health in middle age depending on Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. This study investigated functional connectivity changes and network dynamics at middle age based on parity and APOEε4 genotype, the top genetic risk factor for late-onset sporadic AD risk. Neural activation was assessed in middle-aged wildtype and hAPOEε4 rats that were either nulliparous (0 litters) or primiparous (1 litter), by quantifying expression of the immediat

Evaluating prognostic factors for falls in Parkinson's disease: A sex-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Falls are a common and debilitating complication in Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous studies have primarily focused on cohorts with prevalent falls or advanced disease stages. This study assessed risk factors for falls in early-stage falls-naïve cohort stratified by sex. METHODS: A total of 172 PD patients (<5 years disease duration) were selected from a registry-based study that reported no falls at baseline. All patients were assessed with a standardized data extraction form and falls were defined according to UPDRS Item 13. Hazard Ratios were calculated with univariable and

Sex-based electroclinical differences and prognostic factors in epilepsy with eyelid myoclonia.

Although a striking female preponderance has been consistently reported in epilepsy with eyelid myoclonia (EEM), no study has specifically explored the variability of clinical presentation according to sex in this syndrome. Here, we aimed to investigate sex-specific electroclinical differences and prognostic determinants in EEM. Data from 267 EEM patients were retrospectively analyzed by the EEM Study Group, and a dedicated multivariable logistic regression analysis was developed separately for each sex. We found that females with EEM showed a significantly higher rate of persistence of photos
