Factors influencing women's sex work in a Lebanese sample: results of a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Many constituents contribute to the rise of sex work in Lebanon such as the socio-economic situation in the country (poverty, increased unemployment rates, and religious divisions), as well as the political and social instability. Several emotional and psychological factors such as depression, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional abuse, may force some people to rely on trading sex as a coping strategy for persevering. Therefore, it was deemed interesting to explore and understand factors that are correlated with sex work in Lebanon where no study, to our knowledge, has been

Factors associated with sex work involvement among transgender women in Jamaica: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender women are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Transgender women involved in sex work may experience exacerbated violence, social exclusion, and HIV vulnerabilities, in comparison with non-sex work-involved transgender women. Scant research has investigated sex work among transgender women in the Caribbean, including Jamaica, where transgender women report pervasive violence. The study objective was to examine factors associated with sex work involvement among transgender women in Jamaica. METHODS: In 2015, we implemented a cross-sectional survey using modified peer-d

Work environments and HIV prevention: a qualitative review and meta-synthesis of sex worker narratives.

BACKGROUND: Sex workers (SWs) experience a disproportionately high burden of HIV, with evidence indicating that complex and dynamic factors within work environments play a critical role in mitigating or producing HIV risks in sex work. In light of sweeping policy efforts to further criminalize sex work globally, coupled with emerging calls for structural responses situated in labour and human-rights frameworks, this meta-synthesis of the qualitative and ethnographic literature sought to examine SWs' narratives to elucidate the ways in which physical, social and policy features of diverse work

Region of birth, sex, and agricultural work of immigrant Latino farm workers: the MICASA study.

Agricultural work is hazardous, and immigrant workers perform the majority of production tasks, yet there are few data describing agricultural work and use of protective measures by demographic characteristics. We examined cross-sectionally the influence of region of birth (Mexico vs. Central America) and sex on agricultural work and use of protective measures in the MICASA cohort of immigrant Latino farm workers in Mendota, California. Of 445 participants, 293 (65.8%) were born in Mexico (163 men, 130 women) and 152 (34.2%) were born in Central America (80 men, 72 women). Men worked on averag

A sapphic love story as a window into sex work and rebellion at the turn of the Twentieth Century.

Through newly discovered archival sources, including love letters, police records, hospital files and censuses, this article tracks the love story of two young women, Flora and Agnes, a same-sex couple at the turn of the nineteenth century, working in the sex trade. Their story takes us through police arrest, forced hospitalisation and leisure spaces such as dance halls. Historically, Flora and Agnes represent the many sex workers, who engaged in same-sex relations. It has been estimated that as many as 25% of women selling sex in European metropoles were in sapphic relationships, at the turn

Mapping of sex work hotspots to guide targeted HIV prevention: Evidence from eight Ukrainian cities.

BACKGROUND: Ukraine's HIV epidemic remains concentrated among key populations, with sex workers (SWs) facing overlapping vulnerabilities, including a history of injection drug use. Although overall HIV prevalence has declined, prevention coverage remains below national and global targets. Accurate mapping of sex work hotspots is essential for effective outreach, yet existing data are fragmented and incomplete, especially in privatized and digitally mediated environments. This study aimed to systematically identify and characterize sex work venues across eight Ukrainian cities and assess their

Persona-mediated dissociation: a new framework for understanding the work/self-split in sex workers.

Research on dissociation in sex workers is sparse, dated, and frequently framed through trauma-exclusive or symptom-focused models, leaving the occupational functions of dissociative processes underexamined. In contrast, qualitative and ethnographic scholarship consistently describes intentional work persona construction as routine in sex work and often articulated in dissociative-like terms. This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes persona-mediated dissociation, a framework describing context-specific, identity-mediated psychological distancing in which a deliberately constructed work pers

Special Communication: The Global Phenomenon of Sex Work, Intimate Partner Violence, and Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND/STUDY MOTIVATION: Sex work, an occupation or trade involving exchange of sexual services for economic compensation, is a highly gendered profession, with 60% to 80% of sex workers identifying as women. The rate of traumatic brain injury (TBI) among persons who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in the sex worker population is significantly high. According to global estimates, 80% of female sex workers have experienced IPV, with an estimated 95% reporting TBIs, sustained either by being hit in the head with objects and/or having their heads slammed into objects while on the j

Correlates of Intimate Partner Violence Among Young Women Engaged in Sex Work in Southern Uganda.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant global public health problem that results in high social and economic costs to individuals and communities. Compared to women in the general population, women engaged in sex work (WESW) are more likely to experience physical, emotional, and sexual IPV. This study examines the correlates of IPV among young WESW with their intimate partners in Southern Uganda. We used baseline data from the Kyaterekera project, a 5 year NIH-funded longitudinal study aimed at reducing HIV risks among 542 WESW in Southern Uganda. To examine the factors associated wi

Effects of sex and age on work-related upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Effective targeting of workplace upper extremity musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) prevention strategies requires the identification of demographic groups most at risk. Workers' compensation data provides an effective means of surveillance of MSDs at the population level. OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of this study was to identify the effects of age and sex on rates of tendon injuries of the wrist and hand, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), epicondylitis, and soft tissue shoulder injuries in Ontario, Canada between 2000-2019 using workers' compensation data from the Association of Worke

Sex Work Is Associated With Increased Vaginal Microbiome Diversity in Young Women From Mombasa, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Although nonoptimal vaginal bacteria and inflammation have been associated with increased HIV risk, the upstream drivers of these phenotypes are poorly defined in young African women. SETTING: Mombasa, Kenya. METHODS: We characterized vaginal microbiome and cytokine profiles of sexually active young women aged 14-24 years (n = 168) in 3 study groups: those engaging in formal sex work, in transactional sex, and nonsex workers. Vaginal secretions were collected using self-inserted SoftCup, and assayed for cytokines and vaginal microbiome through multiplex ELISA and 16S rRNA sequenc

Risk Environments and Substance Use Among Mexican Female Sex Work on the U.S.-Mexico Border.

We use a risk environment framework to qualitatively examine pathways into substance use and abuse among Mexican female sex workers on the U.S.-Mexico border. Life history interviews and ethnographic observations were conducted with female sex workers to uncover how the border context shapes patterns of substance use. The findings illustrate that, for many women, initiation into sex work is contextualized within immigration, the global economy, and demands and desire for financial autonomy. Paradoxically, many find autonomy within sex work as they increase their ability to support their famili

Issues concerning the informality and outdoor sex work performed by travestis in São Paulo, Brazil.

The objective of this article was to discuss a series of issues pertaining to outdoor sex work practiced by low-income travestis in São Paulo, Brazil. Qualitative methods conducted among this segment of the population revealed sex work as almost inseparable from the existence of travestis as a social group. Among them, the outdoor modality was the most prominent and social stigma was a predisposing factor for their entrance (and permanence) in sex work. The results showed that some of the difficulties they faced regarding work must be understood as a consequence of them being self-employed, in

Survival sex work involvement among street-involved youth who use drugs in a Canadian setting.

BACKGROUND: Drug users engaged in survival sex work are at heightened risk for drug- and sexual-related harms. We examined factors associated with survival sex work among street-involved youth in Vancouver, Canada. METHODS: From September 2005 to November 2007, baseline data were collected for the At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS), a prospective cohort of street-recruited youth aged 14-26 who use illicit drugs. Using multiple logistic regression, we compared youth who reported exchanging sex for money, drugs etc. with those who did not. RESULTS: The sample included 560 youth: median age 22; 179 (32

Sex Work and Motherhood: Social and Structural Barriers to Health and Social Services for Pregnant and Parenting Street and Off-Street Sex Workers.

Our study documents the correlates of barriers to pregnancy and mothering among sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. We used baseline data from An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA), a prospective cohort of sex workers. Among the 399 sex workers who had ever been pregnant or had a child, 35% reported having ever experienced a barrier, with lower education, homelessness, and history of injecting drugs significantly correlated with pregnancy and mothering barriers. Our findings highlight a critical need for tailored and nonjudgmental services and supports, including improved programs

Childhood and adolescent factors shaping vulnerability to underage entry into sex work: a quantitative hierarchical analysis of female sex workers in Nairobi, Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: To explore factors associated with early age at entry into sex work, among a cohort of female sex workers (FSWs) in Nairobi, Kenya. BACKGROUND: Younger age at sex work initiation increases the risk of HIV acquisition, condom non-use, violence victimisation and alcohol and/or substance use problems. This study aimed to understand factors in childhood and adolescence that shape the vulnerability to underage sex work initiation. DESIGN: Building on previous qualitative research with this cohort, analysis of behavioural-biological cross-sectional data using hierarchical logistic regre

Syndemic Health Disparities and Sexually Transmitted Infection Burden Among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men Engaged in Sex Work in the U.S.

Black men who have sex with men (MSM) engaged in sex work (BMSM-SW) experience elevated HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence. Further, BMSM-SW have been shown to have higher rates of syndemic psychosocial health conditions which contribute to HIV risk behavior and incidence, and poorer care outcomes than other groups of men who have sex with men. However, syndemic perspectives have not been applied to understanding past-year STI burden among BMSM-SW in the U.S. Sexually active Black MSM ≥ 18 years old were recruited from Black Pride events in six U.S. cities (n = 4421) betwe

Association Between Vaginal Gram Stain Categories and Cervicitis in Kenyan Women Who Engage in Sex Work.

BACKGROUND: Cervicitis is often caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, but remains unexplained in approximately half of cases. Studies examining associations between the vaginal microbiota and cervicitis have produced conflicting results. METHODS: This study analyzed data from a cohort of women who engage in sex work in Mombasa, Kenya (2004-2023). Vaginal microbiota was categorized by Nugent criteria as normal (0-3), intermediate (4-6), or bacterial vaginosis (BV, 7-10). Lactobacillus status by culture was classified as none detected, non-H2O2-producing, or H2O2-producing.
