Sexual interest in animals (zoophilia) is a scant investigated topic owing partially to difficulties in assessing the behavior outside of a clinical setting. While there have been previous attempts to categorize individuals with a sexual interest in animals into classification systems, this requires extensive clinical interviews and psychometric testing. Previous classifications also lack clarity on the adjacent concept of furryism (i.e., interest in anthropomorphized animals) and how it may be related to zoophilia. As there are currently no validated psychometric measures of zoophilia, indivi

The acute administration of estradiol benzoate (EB) to the ovariectomized (OVX) rat induces low levels of lordosis while sexually appetitive behaviors (e.g., hops, darts, solicitations) are absent, yet the repeated administration of EB results in a behavioral sensitization in which lordosis is potentiated and sexually appetitive behaviors are induced. We have shown that repeated copulation attenuates the sensitization of appetitive sexual behaviors. Here, we assessed which component of male stimulation during copulation is involved in the attenuation. On 8 occasions, sexually experienced OVX L

Hyposexuality is a common problem in stroke patients. Some stroke patients, however, may present with hypersexuality. We report three stroke patients who demonstrated hypersexuality and deviant sexual behavior after stroke. Abnormal sexual behavior was noted by members of the stroke rehabilitation team while the patients were in hospital. Details of pre- and poststroke sexual activity were obtained from patients and their spouses. All three patients had temporal lobe lesions on computerized tomography, and all had a history of poststroke seizure activity. The 53-year-old man reported poststrok

Procreation was an important moral and religious issue and aphrodisiacs were sought to ensure both male and female potency. Sexual dysfunction is an inability to achieve a normal sexual intercourse, including premature ejaculation, retrograded, retarded or inhibited ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, arousal difficulties (reduced libido), compulsive sexual behavior, orgasmic disorder, and failure of detumescence. The introduction of the first pharmacologically approved remedy for impotence, Viagra (sildenafil) in 1990s caused a wave of public attention, propelled in part by heavy advertising.

It has long been known that the estrogen, 17β-estradiol (17β-E), plays a central role for female reproductive physiology and behavior. Numerous studies have established the neurochemical and molecular basis of estrogenic induction of female sexual behavior, i.e., lordosis, in animal models. In addition, 17β-E also regulates male-type sexual and aggressive behavior. In males, testosterone secreted from the testes is irreversibly aromatized to 17β-E in the brain. We discuss the contribution of two nuclear receptor isoforms, estrogen receptor (ER)α and ERβ to the estrogenic regulation of sexually

Several conditions that inhibit female sexual behavior are thought to be associated with altered corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) activity in the brain. The present experiments examined the hypothesis that endogenous CRH receptor signaling mediates the inhibition of estrous behavior by undernutrition and in other instances of sexual dysfunction. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of CRH or urocortin inhibited estrous behavior in ovariectomized steroid-primed hamsters. Conversely, ICV infusion of the CRH receptor antagonist astressin prevented the suppression of estrous behavior by foo

The prenatal and postnatal testosterone surges in the male rat are associated with neurobehavioral sexual differentiation of the brain. Both surges can be attenuated by maternal stress or other environmental factors that activate the maternal and/or fetal hypothalamic/pituitary/adrenal (HPA) axis during the last week of gestation. Since hypoxia is known to activate the HPA axis, we studied its effect during gestation on sexual differentiation in the male rat. We examined the influence of intermittent hypoxic exposure during gestation with respect to the postnatal testosterone surge and cortico

Environmental conditions such as temperature, light and food availability are known to influence the physiological status of animals. The male dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) is considered as a seasonal breeder with maximal sexual activity during certain period of the year followed by a decrease in activity during the remaining period. On the other hand, the male camel is also shown as an atypical seasonal breeder because this does not undergo sexual quiescence with complete cessation of spermatogenesis. This animal, however, shows remarkable physiological and behavioral changes during i

All behaviors' that satisfy a person's biological needs and desires are considered sexual behaviors. Despite the fact that sexual behavior and expression are universal to all animals, especially humans, the context in which the behaviors are expressed may make it risky or even dangerous. High risk sexual behaviors' and substance use disorders are frequently been linked. This study's main goal is to investigate the relationship between substance use by Men and their participation in high risk sexual behaviors. In the current study data were taken from NFHS 5 (2019-2021) and methods like Pearson

Pregnane neurosteroids may initiate sexual receptivity not only via actions at intracellular receptors, but by affecting gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor complexes (GBRs). To investigate whether GBR-mediated actions of an androgenic neurosteroid 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol (3 alpha-androstanediol; 3 alpha-Diol) may influence the expression of sexual behavior, ovariectomized (ovx) rats received daily injections of 3 alpha-Diol (0.6, 3.0, 6.0 and 7.5 mg/kg) or vehicle (10% (v/v) ethanol in propylene glycol) at 10.00 h, and s.c. injections of estradiol-17 beta (E2: 1 microgram

Disruption of the sexual differentiation process during critical periods in male rodents produces changes in partner preference and sexual behavior. In this study we used prenatal (gestation days 10-22) letrozole (0.31 and 0.56 μg/kg) to inhibit aromatase and alter normal sexual differentiation of males. These animals and control rats (injected with vehicle) were used when adults to study: a) sexual preference (where the experimental male could choose to interact with a receptive female or a sexually experienced male); b) masculine and feminine sexual behaviors (tested in cylindrical arenas);

BACKGROUND: Why do males and females behave differently? Sexually dimorphic behaviors could arise from sex-specific neurons or by the modification of circuits present in both sexes. C. elegans males exhibit different behaviors than hermaphrodites. Although there is a single class of sex-specific sensory neurons in the head of males, most of their neurons are part of a core nervous system also present in hermaphrodites. Are the behavioral differences due to sex-specific or core neurons?
RESULTS: We demonstrate that C. elegans males chemotax to a source of hermaphrodite pheromones. This sexual-

The social behavior of animals, which is partially controlled by genetics, is one of the factors involved in their adaptation to large breeding groups. To understand better the relationships between different social behaviors, fear behaviors and production traits, we analyzed the phenotypic and genetic correlations of these traits in Japanese quail by a second generation crossing of two lines divergently selected for their social reinstatement behavior. Analyses of results for 900 individuals showed that the phenotypic correlations between behavioral traits were low with the exception of signi

There has been an extensive search for efficient pharmacological treatment of female sexual interest/arousal disorder and other sexual dysfunctions. However, available treatments have met limited success, except for the drugs used for treating erectile deficiency. A possible reason for this may be that both the preclinical and clinical evaluation of treatment effects have been inadequate. The present literature review shows that the intensity of sexual approach behaviors in non-human animals appears to be predictive of clinical effect whereas the traditional studies of copulatory behaviors and

Sexually dimorphic differentiation of sex-shared behaviors is observed across the animal world, but the underlying neurobiological mechanisms are not fully understood. Here we report sexual dimorphism in neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) of adult Caenorhabditis elegans. Studying worm locomotion confirms sex differences in spontaneous locomotion of adult animals, and quantitative fluorescence analysis shows that excitatory cholinergic synapses, but not inhibitory GABAergic synapses exhibit the adult-specific difference in synaptic vesicles between males and hermaphr

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction affects approximately 40% of women in the United States, yet few therapeutic options exist for these patients. The melanocortin system is a new treatment target for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), but the neuronal pathways involved are unclear.
METHODS: In this study, the sexual behavior of female MC4R knockout mice lacking melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4Rs) was examined. The mice were then bred to express MC4Rs exclusively on Sim1 neurons (tbMC4RSim1 mice) or on oxytocin neurons (tbMC4ROxt mice) to examine the effect on sexual responsiveness.

The behavioral effects of drugs stimulating prolactin (PRL) secretion have been studied in male rats. Acquisition of active avoidance behavior was facilitated by short- (SHPRL) and long-term hyperprolactinaemia (LHPRL) induced by pituitary homografts under the kidney capsule. Dopamine antagonists, such as haloperidol and bromperidol, though causing hyperprolactinaemia, suppressed the acquisition of active avoidance behavior. Sulpiride was not effective in this respect. SHPRL facilitated and LHPRL inhibited sexual behavior of male rats. Haloperidol, but not sulpiride, suppressed sexual capacity

The medial preoptic (MPN) and the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei (VMN) modulate the estrogen receptor (ER)-dependent female sexual behavior, a response that is inhibited by tamoxifen (TAM), a modulator of the steroid receptor activation. With the objective to assess TAM action in the brain areas involved in the modulation sexual cues, an animal model on long-term TAM therapy to intact female rats, was used to mimic the 5-year prophylactic TAM therapy offered to women at higher risk of breast cancer. After three months treatment, female sexual behavior with a stud male rat was evaluated. Upon

An increasing number of observers are claiming that a biological model is more appropriate to an understanding of human sexuality than the conventional social-learning one. Such claims have prompted a perusal of the biological literature to ascertain whether the relevant evidence is convincing. The results of this review suggest that claims for the biological model are questionable since the evidence for that model either derives from animal studies (and is thus not generally applicable to human behavior) or is inconclusive, contradictory, or methodologically deficient. It is concluded, theref

We review recent research in one of the oldest and most important applications of ethology: evaluating animal health. Traditionally, such evaluations have been based on subjective assessments of debilitative signs; animals are judged ill when they appear depressed or off feed. Such assessments are prone to error but can be dramatically improved with training using well-defined clinical criteria. The availability of new technology to automatically record behaviors allows for increased use of objective measures; automated measures of feeding behavior and intake are increasingly available in comm
