Sex, lies, and gastrointestinal tract biopsies: a review of selected sexually transmitted proctocolitides.

There are many insults that result in gastrointestinal tract inflammation. Infections can be particularly challenging because (1) only a limited number of organisms provoke a specific endoscopic and/or histologic appearance; and (2) although some organisms may be present on biopsies, the findings may be so subtle or organisms so few that they are easily missed if the reviewer is not performing a specific search for the offender. Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are rarely a consideration at the time of GI biopsy examination and clinicians rarely inquire about sexual behavior at the time o

Sexonomics: a commentary and review of selected sexually transmitted disease studies in the economics literature.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this review is to highlight selected studies in the economics literature that address sexually transmitted disease (STD)-related topics that are typically not examined in the STD literature. METHODS: Two databases (EconLit and Web of Science) were searched to locate STD-related articles in the economics journals. Relevant articles were also identified in other ways, such as informal discussions with colleagues familiar with the literature. To maintain a focus on unique STD-related topics, studies with topics common in the STD literature (e.g., cost-effectiveness, tr

Genetic linkage between a sexually selected trait and X chromosome meiotic drive.

Previous studies on the stalk-eyed fly, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni, have shown that males with long eye-stalks win contests and are preferred by females, and artificial selection on male relative eye span alters brood sex-ratios. Subsequent theory proposes that X-linked meiotic drive can catalyse the evolution of mate preferences when drive is linked to ornament genes. Here we test this prediction by mapping meiotic drive and quantitative trait loci (QTL) for eye span. To map QTL we genotyped 24 microsatellite loci using 1228 F2 flies from two crosses between lines selected for long or short eye sp

Chemosensory selectivity of output neurons innervating an identified, sexually isomorphic olfactory glomerulus.

The antennal lobe (AL) of insects, like the olfactory bulb of vertebrates, is characterized by discrete modules of synaptic neuropil called glomeruli. In some insects (e.g., moths and cockroaches), a few glomeruli are sexually dimorphic and function in labeled lines for processing of sensory information about sex pheromones. Controversy still exists, however, about whether projection (output) neurons (PNs) of glomeruli in the main AL are also narrowly tuned. We examined this critical issue in the AL of the moth Manduca sexta. We used intracellular recording and staining techniques to investiga

Update on pregnancy, condom use, and prevalence of selected sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents.

Adolescent pregnancy and its consequences continue as major sources of morbidity in the United States. A teenager who becomes a parent is at a significant disadvantage in becoming a contributing adult, both psychosocially and economically. The physician who cares for adolescents has the responsibility of helping parenting teens to find needed support so that they will be able to overcome this significant hurdle. Attention from public agencies has focused on increasing condom use as one approach to adolescent pregnancy prevention. The major advantage of using condoms is that they also prevent t

Sexually transmitted diseases among randomly selected attenders at an antenatal clinic in The Gambia.

One hundred randomly selected women attending a free government antenatal clinic in the town of Bakau, The Gambia, were examined. Vaginal swabs were taken for microscopical examination for Trichomonas vaginalis and for culture on Sabouraud's medium. Cervical swabs were taken for culture of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis and, in 50 cases, Herpesvirus hominis; in addition, urethral swabs were taken for culture of N gonorrhoeae. Serum samples were tested for antibodies to Treponema pallidum by the Venereal Diseases Research Laboratory (VDRL) test and T pallidum haemagglutination

The evolution of sexual dichromatism in a large radiation of landfowl: Re-examining female-biased selection in Wallace's model.

Sexual dichromatism is generally thought to arise from sexual selection favouring elaborately coloured males, as proposed in Darwin's model. Wallace offers an expanded perspective, emphasising that the evolution of cryptic and dim female colouration to evade nest predation significantly contributed to the origin of sexual dichromatism. However, previous studies on the evolutionary forces of sexual dichromatism examining Darwin's and Wallace's models have produced mixed results. Here, we re-examined Wallace's model of female-biased selection using the largest and most ecologically diverse famil

Phylogenetic Relationships of Immune Function and Oxidative Physiology With Sexual Selection and Parental Effort in Male and Female Birds.

Sexual differences in physiology are widely regarded as potential proximate mechanisms that underlie sex differences in mortality, life history and disease risk of vertebrates. However, little is known about the causes of sex-specific variation in physiology. Sexual selection and parental workload are two key components suggested to play a role. Theory predicts that, within males, species with stronger male sexual selection (greater sexual dichromatism and more frequent social polygyny) and higher male parental effort should have lower immune capacity and stronger oxidative imbalance. Within f

Sexual selection theory meets disease vector control: Testing harmonic convergence as a "good genes" signal in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Aedes aegypti is a medically important, globally distributed vector of the viruses that cause dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika. Although reproduction and mate choice are key components of vector population dynamics and control, our understanding of the mechanisms of sexual selection in mosquitoes remains poor. In "good genes" models of sexual selection, females use male cues as an indicator of both mate and offspring genetic quality. Recent studies in Ae. aegypti provide evidence that male wingbeats may signal aspects of offspring quality and performance dur

Multiple paternity and postcopulatory sexual selection in a hermaphrodite: what influences sperm precedence in the garden snail Helix aspersa?

Sperm competition has been studied in many gonochoric animals but little is known about its occurrence in simultaneous hermaphrodites, especially in land snails. The reproductive behaviour of the land snail Helix aspersa involves several features, like multiple mating, long-term sperm storage and dart-shooting behaviour, which may promote sperm competition. Cryptic female choice may also occur through a spermatheca subdivided into tubules, which potentially allows compartmentalized sperm storage of successive mates. In order to determine the outcome of postcopulatory sexual selection in this s

Personality-based typology of adolescent male sexual offenders: differences in recidivism rates, victim-selection characteristics, and personal victimization histories.

California Psychological Inventory scores from 112 adolescent male sexual offenders aged 12-19 (M = 15.59, SD = 1.46) were examined. A cluster analysis of factor-derived scores revealed four personality-based subgroups: Antisocial/Impulsive, Unusual/Isolated, Overcontrolled/Reserved, and Confident/Aggressive. Significant differences were observed between groups regarding history of physical abuse, parental marital status, residence of the offenders, and whether or not offenders received criminal charges for their index sexual assaults. Subgroup membership was unrelated to victim age, victim ge

Sexual selection and maintenance of sex: evidence from comparisons of rates of genomic accumulation of mutations and divergence of sex-related genes in sexual and hermaphroditic species of Caenorhabditis.

Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the persistence of dioecy despite the reproductive advantages conferred to hermaphrodites, including greater efficiency at purging deleterious mutations in the former. Dioecy can benefit from both mutation purging and accelerated evolution by bringing together beneficial mutations in the same individual via recombination and shuffling of genotypes. In addition, mathematical treatment has shown that sexual selection is also capable of mitigating the cost of maintaining separate sexes by increasing the overall fitness of sexual populations, and ge

Balancing non-discriminatory donor selection and blood safety in the Netherlands: Evaluation of an individual risk assessment of sexual behavior.

BACKGROUND: To better balance the safety of the blood supply and the inclusion of men who have sex with men (MSM), further improvements are needed to the risk management strategy employed in the Netherlands to reduce transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs). A gender-neutral individual risk assessment could provide a solution by determining donor eligibility based on sexual behaviors known to increase the risk of TTIs. Our objective is to estimate the proportion of blood donors that would be deferred by such an assessment, as well as their discomfort answering such questions. STUDY DESIGN

Differences in the Selection Bottleneck between Modes of Sexual Transmission Influence the Genetic Composition of the HIV-1 Founder Virus.

Due to the stringent population bottleneck that occurs during sexual HIV-1 transmission, systemic infection is typically established by a limited number of founder viruses. Elucidation of the precise forces influencing the selection of founder viruses may reveal key vulnerabilities that could aid in the development of a vaccine or other clinical interventions. Here, we utilize deep sequencing data and apply a genetic distance-based method to investigate whether the mode of sexual transmission shapes the nascent founder viral genome. Analysis of 74 acute and early HIV-1 infected subjects reveal

Cessation of Gene Flow Associated With the Reduction of a Sexually Selected Phenotype in the Island Stag Beetle.

Whether gene flow acts as a creative or constraining force on local adaptation is a fundamental question in evolutionary biology, yet its role in the evolution of sexually selected traits remains poorly understood. Here we combine whole-genome and functional analyses to investigate how geological isolation is associated with the evolution of sexually selected traits. We focused on the stag beetle genus Prosopocoilus of the Izu Islands, Japan. In the mainland population (MLP), males possess sexually selected enlarged mandibles. In contrast, across the Izu Islands, relative mandible size decreas

Selection of DNA Aptamers Against Neisseria gonorrhoeae Causing Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI).

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. Gonorrhoea is a very serious infection because if untreated, it can lead to significant ramifications to reproductive, maternal, & newborn health and increase transmission of HIV. Infections are very often asymptomatic and symptoms when present manifest differently in men and women. The cornerstone of gonorrhoea control is to assure rapid diagnosis and prompt treatment of patients to prevent the onward spread of infection. The resource-rich settings are utilizing nucleic acid amplific

Evidence for a sexually selected function of the attachment system in bedbugs Cimex lectularius (Heteroptera, Cimicidae).

Attachment to surfaces is a major aspect of an animal's interaction with the environment. Consequently, shaping of the attachment system in relation to weight load and substrate is considered to have occurred mainly by natural selection. However, sexual selection may also be important because many animals attach to their partner during mating. The two hypotheses generate opposing predictions in species where males are smaller than females. Natural selection predicts that attachment ability will scale positively with load, and hence body size, and so will be larger in females than males. Sexual

Choose to test: self-selected testing for sexually transmitted infections within an online service.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the outcomes of user-led, choice of test within an online sexual health service. METHODS: We analysed routinely collected data from a free, online sexual health service in Essex, UK that enabled users to select their tests. The service website provided information on all sexually transmitted infections, recommended a testing package based on sexuality and ethnicity, and invited users to modify this if they chose. Data on orders were analysed for the 6 months before (May-October 2016) and after (October-April 2017) implementation. RESULTS: We compared 7550 orders from 6

The estimated direct medical cost of selected sexually transmitted infections in the United States, 2008.

BACKGROUND: Millions of cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur in the United States each year, resulting in substantial medical costs to the nation. Previous estimates of the total direct cost of STIs are quite dated. We present updated direct medical cost estimates of STIs in the United States. METHODS: We assembled recent (i.e., 2002-2011) cost estimates to determine the lifetime cost per case of 8 major STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human papillomavirus, genital herpes simplex virus type 2, trichomoniasis and syphilis).
