Mental health disparities have been reported among sexual minority individuals; minority stress theory posits that such disparities are a result of stigma and discrimination. We estimated the prevalence of mental disorders across sexual orientation groups among first-year college students and whether differences across sexual orientation groups varied by gender and country-level LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) social acceptance. Using data (N = 53,175; 13 countries) from the World Mental Health Surveys International College Surveys, we performed multilevel logistic regressi

BACKGROUND: Research on child sexual abuse increasingly focuses on sexually offending females; however, there is a lack of research that focuses on the individuals being affected. Studies have suggested that the consequences for those affected by sexually offending males and females are comparable.
OBJECTIVE: The aim is to compare mental health consequences of sexual abuse perpetrated by women versus men in quantity and type.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data was anonymously retrieved from the German-wide contact point "help line sexual abuse" from 2016 to 2021. Details of abuse cases, gender o

This study provided a descriptive and quantitative comparative analysis of data from an assessment protocol for adolescents referred clinically for gender identity disorder (n = 192; 105 boys, 87 girls) or transvestic fetishism (n = 137, all boys). The protocol included information on demographics, behavior problems, and psychosexual measures. Gender identity disorder and transvestic fetishism youth had high rates of general behavior problems and poor peer relations. On the psychosexual measures, gender identity disorder patients had considerably greater cross-gender behavior and gender dyspho

Purpose: Research on opioid misuse, opioid use disorder (OUD), and overdose (i.e., opioid outcomes) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other populations within the LGBTQ umbrella (LGBTQ+) remains sparse. The purpose of this scoping review was to characterize the state of the research on opioid outcomes among LGBTQ+ populations, and identify gaps in the extant literature and areas for future research. Methods: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed, English language articles published between 2011 and 2020 that examined opioid outcomes among LGBTQ+ populations in the

Purpose: The study purpose was to (1) identify latent classes of substance use behaviors among a sample of sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults living in a predominantly rural midwestern state and (2) determine the association between SGM-related discrimination and the empirically derived substance use classes. Methods: We conducted a latent class analysis on 494 responses to a state-wide survey, followed by a multinomial logistic regression to test predictors of class membership, including distal experiences of discrimination and sociodemographic variables. Results: A three-class model fit

This essay serves as a close reading of psychiatrist Fredric Wertham's 1950s descriptions and critiques of female comics characters. I draw on archival sources as well as relevant texts in the study of gender and sexuality. Additionally, I integrate ideas from two of his close associates, folklorist Gershon Legman and psychiatrist Hilde Mosse, whose contributions to Seduction of the Innocent are woven-often invisibly-throughout that text. The character of Wonder Woman serves as a touchstone, but other provocative female figures that Wertham found objectionable in mid-twentieth-century comics a

It has been over 50 years since the Stonewall Inn Riots in June 1969, a seminal event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and other sexual and gender-diverse minorities (LGBTQI+, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and everyone else) rights movement. However, sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals still face discrimination and harassment due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. As such, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has identified SGM communities as a "health disparity population." Broadly, there

Purpose: We examined the associations between intersectional minority stress and substance use among sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents of color and the moderating role of family support on these associations. Methods: Data were from a national U.S. sample of SGM adolescents of color (N = 3423). Intersectional minority stress was assessed with the LGBT People of Color Microaggressions Scale. Results: Intersectional minority stress was associated with greater odds of recent and heavy alcohol and recent cannabis use, but not tobacco use. When examining specific domains of intersectiona

Sexual minorities face greater exposure to discrimination and rejection than heterosexuals. Given these threats, sexual minorities may engage in sexual orientation concealment in order to avoid danger. This social stigma and minority stress places sexual minorities at risk for anxiety and related disorders. Given that three fourths of anxiety disorder onset occurs before the age of 24, the current study investigated the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression in sexual minority young adults relative to their heteros

The Metamorphoses Greek myth includes a story about a woman raised as a male falling in love with another woman, and being transformed into a man prior to a wedding ceremony and staying with her. It is therefore considered that people who desire to live as though they have the opposite gender have existed since ancient times. People who express a sense of discomfort with their anatomical sex and related roles have been reported in the medical literature since the middle of the 19th century. However, homosexual, fetishism, gender identity disorder, and associated conditions were mixed together

Child sexual abuse has been identified as a potential risk factor for developing a psychotic disorder. However, little is known about the prevalence of psychotic disorders in youth who were sexually abused during adolescence and young adulthood. Gender differences also remain unclear. This study used administrative databases from a Child Protection Agency and a public health care system. It aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychotic disorders in sexually abused youth between the first substantiated report of sexual abuse and the beginning of adulthood. A second objective was to assess ge

Sexuality and sexual health are essential for the overall well-being of all individuals. In neurology, research traditionally focused on disorders of sexual function associated with syndromes that present with specific lesions of the spinal cord and brain. In neuropsychiatric tic disorders, however, early research addressed sexuality and sexual behaviors in a wider context and beyond the strict diagnostic categories of sexual dysfunction, including gender identity and sexual orientation. Although these studies provided important insights in the behavioral structure of adults with primary tic d

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that tailored programming for sexual and gender minority (SGM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) people, compared to non-tailored programming, is effective for reducing the disproportionate health burden SGM people experience relative to the general population. However, the availability of SGM-tailored programming is often over-reported and inconsistent across behavioral health (i.e., substance use and mental health) facilities in the United States (U.S.).
METHODS: Using panel analysis, the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N

BACKGROUND: Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use are among the most prevalent and important health disparities affecting sexual and gender minority (SGM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) populations. Although numerous government agencies and health experts have called for substance use intervention studies to address these disparities, such studies continue to be relatively rare.
METHOD: We conducted a scoping review of prevention and drug treatment intervention studies for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use that were conducted with SGM adults. We searched three databases to ident

This article is organised into sections that explore three key themes. The first is overarching and cuts across the literature, where within recent bisexuality research there has been increased inclusion of those whose identities are defined by attraction to multiple genders (e.g., pansexual, queer, and others). This has sometimes been in the form of an amalgamated bisexual+ category, but recent attention has also been given to definitions of bisexuality and pansexuality and how bisexual and pansexual identities might compare. The second theme explores mental health including substance use/abu

This article describes the case of a young man diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder mixed type. The patient expressed dissatisfaction with his gender and showed a desire to change it for two years. He has applied to psychiatrists twice for permission to change his gender, having received preliminary diagnoses of «Gender dysphoria» and «Transsexualism». After treatment, which includes ECT, psychotic symptoms has disappeared, sexual identification has fully restored, and criticism of behavior and experiences has formed.

Wicked Bodies is a toolkit for addressing eating disorder in LGBTQIA2S+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, Two-Spirit, and other sexual and gender minority) communities, an increasing prevalent issue that can have serious consequences on the health and well-being for LGBTQIA2S+ people. The toolkit consists of a series of short films and a discussion guidebook that provide a template that can be used for engaging with LGBTQIA2S+ youth through a lens of compassion and cultural humility. Wicked Bodies does this by presenting the lived experiences of a diverse range of

The paper presents the case study of a mental health collective run by queer people in Mumbai that aims to promote mental health literacy and help-seeking behavior that are anchored in the psy disciplines although the founders are not psy professionals themselves. The study analyses the delicate balance between valorizing personal experience and trusting psy authority that is evident in the functioning of the collective and in the founders' own negotiations of their psychiatric diagnoses with their queer identities and other experiences. The analysis is anchored in a broader pattern in India o

BACKGROUND: To determine gender differences in rates of sexual and physical abuse in functional movement disorders compared to controls and evaluate if the gender disparity of functional movement disorders is associated with abuse history.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective case-control study of self-reported trauma data from 696 patients (512 women) with functional movement disorders from six clinical sites compared to 141 controls (98 women) and population data. Chi-square was used to assess gender and disorder associations; logistic regression was used to model additive effects of abuse
