Expressions of shame in investigative interviews with Australian Aboriginal children.

This study inspected a sample of 70 interview transcripts with Australian Aboriginal children to gain a sense of how frequently verbal shame responses were occurring in investigative interviews regarding alleged sexual abuse. Transcripts were examined to determine how children articulated shame, how interviewers reacted to these responses, and how shame related to children's accounts. Examination of frequencies revealed that verbal shame responses occurred in just over one-quarter of the interviews. One-way analyses of variance indicated that children who expressed shame within the interview s

The impact of shame and self-judgment on psychopathology in infertile patients.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about psychological processes of infertile couples pursuing medical treatment in comparison with fertile couples and adoption candidates who also suffer from infertility but are not seeking medical help. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of these individuals in terms of psychological processes (such as external shame, internal shame and self-judgment) and their association with psychopathology, also attending to gender differences. METHODS: One hundred control couples without known fertility problems [fertile group (FG)], 100 couples with an i

An exploration of the main sources of shame in an eating-disordered population.

OBJECTIVES: Shame has received increased attention over recent years and has been shown to be a feature of many forms of psychopathology, including eating disorders. The current study contributes to this field by exploring relationships between shame and a variety of factors hypothesized to contribute to shame in a sample of 52 females with eating disorders. DESIGN: A cross-sectional questionnaire design was used. METHODS: Participants were 52 women with eating disorders. They completed six questionnaires: The Experience of Shame Scale, the Parental Bonding Inventory, the Social Isolation Su

The necessity of combined therapy in the treatment of shame: a case report.

Abstract In some situations, combined psychotherapy may not be merely a choice, but a necessity for successful treatment. I present a case report of a hospitalized Vietnam veteran who had sexually abused one of his daughters. In individual therapy, the patient learned to speak about himself, his significant guilt, and his shame, in a trusting environment. After a year of outpatient individual work, I felt that the addition of group psychotherapy would help this withdrawn man to connect to a social milieu. Although anxious about self-disclosure and confidentiality, he joined a heterogeneous vet

Bodily shame as a mediator between abusive experiences and depression.

The role of bodily shame as a mediator between sexual or physical abuse and depression was investigated in a community sample of 101 women who had been followed for 8 years. In general, childhood and adult abuse were related to the occurrence of depression in the study period but when both were considered together, only adult abuse showed an independent association. However, childhood and adult abuse were both independently related to chronic or recurrent depression. Bodily shame was related to childhood abuse, and this association could not be accounted for by bodily dissatisfaction or low se

Pride Before a Fall: Shame, Diagnostic Crossover, and Eating Disorders.

This paper discusses the findings of qualitative research that examined the accounts of five "mostly recovered" ex-patients who had experienced transition between two or more eating disorder diagnoses. This study found that, in the minds of participants, the different diagnostic labels were associated with various good or bad character traits. This contributed to the belief in a diagnostic hierarchy, whereby individuals diagnosed with anorexia nervosa were viewed as morally better than those diagnosed with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder. Consequently, diagnostic crossover from a "bet

Avoiding shame: young LGBT people, homophobia and self-destructive behaviours.

This paper reports on findings from qualitative research conducted in the UK that sought to explore the connections between sexual identities and self-destructive behaviours in young people. International evidence demonstrates that there are elevated rates of suicide and alcohol abuse amongst lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. Rarely included in this body of research are investigations into young LGBT people's views and experiences of self-destructive behaviours. Data from interviews and focus groups with young LGBT participants suggest a strong link between homophobia and se

Moral distress, shame, and professional identity in older adult care.

BackgroundMoral distress is an increasingly recognized ethical concern in healthcare, particularly in older adult care, where it is associated with negative consequences for nurses, patients, and healthcare organizations. Although widely studied, its emotional dimensions, particularly the role of shame, remain insufficiently understood.AimTo explore nurses' experiences of moral distress, shame, and professional identity in older adult care, as well as their perspectives on support and development opportunities that can alleviate moral distress and its consequences.Research designQualitative ex

Never good enough--part 1: Shame or borderline personality disorder?

This paper takes a deconstructive approach to the historical, clinical, and social context of the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This is undertaken by providing an overview of pertinent literature, an examination of the diagnostic criteria, a discussion of the development of the shame affect, a discussion of women's narratives and a reinterpretation of the symptoms of BPD as an overwhelming shame response. An argument is developed that shame is an integral but neglected feature in the experiences of mental distress that are characteristic of BPD. This discussion is support

The effect of mindfulness-based counseling on shame in women with human papillomavirus.

This study evaluated the impact of mindfulness-based counseling on shame in women with Human Papillomavirus (HPV), addressing the gap in standardized mental health support and the often-overlooked emotional distress in HPV care. This randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2024 at Ayatollah Mousavi Hospital in Zanjan, Iran. Participants were recruited during routine visits and randomly assigned to intervention or control groups (70 per group) using block randomization. The intervention group received standard care plus eight weekly 90-minute mindfulness-based group counseling sessions (on

Shame and loneliness in social anxiety disorder: A comparison with panic disorder.

Shame and loneliness are two important emotions that have been suggested to play a maintaining role in social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, it is not clear whether emotional processes involving these emotions are predominantly experienced in SAD or shared with other anxiety disorders. In the present study we examined the temporal relationship between shame and loneliness on one hand and anxiety on the other among individuals with SAD and among individuals with panic disorder (PD). We used a daily diary design in which participants reported their emotional experiences every evening for 21 co

Outcomes and moderators of shame in residential treatment for eating disorders in females.

Shame is a painful, self-conscious emotion that is implicated in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders. However, there is a dearth of research examining shame outcomes in clinically acute eating disorder samples. The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcomes and moderators of internal shame in female (adolescent and adult) residential patients diagnosed with a range of eating disorders. Participants (N = 176) were attending residential eating disorder treatment for eating disorders and were assessed for internal shame, self-esteem, eating disorder diagnosis, duration of

Judgment, shame, and coercion: the criminal legal system and reproductive autonomy.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has called attention to limitations to reproductive autonomy in both women who are socially disadvantaged and in those who have had contact with the criminal legal (CL) system. However, it is unclear whether CL system contact influences contraceptive use patterns and how these processes unfold. We utilize a mixed-methods approach to investigate whether history of arrest is associated with receipt of contraceptive counseling, use of long-term contraception, sterilization, and subsequent desire for reversal of sterilization. We further consider how agents i

Disclosure of Sexual Victimization: Effects of Invalidation and Shame on Re-Disclosure.

Research on disclosure of sexual victimization has consistently demonstrated that the act of disclosure and the disclosure recipient have a synergistic effect in facilitating either positive or negative post-assault outcomes. While negative judgments such as victim blame have been argued to serve a silencing function, experimental investigations of this claim are lacking. The current study investigated whether invalidating feedback in response to self-disclosure of a personally distressing event produced feelings of shame, and whether shame influenced subsequent decisions around re-disclosure.

Sensitivity to punishment and emotional eating: The mediating role of shame and rumination.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between sensitivity to punishment (SP) and emotional eating has been previously examined. However, effective variables in this relationship have yet to be recognized. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between SP and emotional eating via facets of shame and rumination. DESIGN: Serial Mediation model was proposed. METHOD: Female university students in Iran (n = 174) completed Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward Questionnaire-Revised and Clarified (SPSRQ-RC), Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ), Experience of Shame Scale (ESS)

The association between OCD and Shame: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to rumination and self-criticism over unwanted obsessions and repetitive rituals, shame is a common emotion experienced by individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Shame is also theorized to have relevance to unacceptable thoughts in OCD. However, empirical research looking at the relationship between OCD and shame is still emerging and findings have been mixed. OBJECTIVES: Our review systematically examines the association of shame with OCD and unacceptable thoughts. METHODS: The last updated search was conducted across five databases between 27 and 29 February

Experiences of shame and guilt in anorexia and bulimia nervosa: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Emotional states may play an important role in the development and maintenance of anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). This systematic review aimed to examine the evidence regarding the relationship that shame and guilt have with two eating disorders, AN and BN. METHODS: Four major databases (Pubmed, PsychINFO, Web of Science, Medline) were searched (up until April 2018) for studies measuring guilt or shame in clinically diagnosed AN and BN groups. Included papers were evaluated for risk of bias. RESULTS: Twenty-four papers met the inclusion criteria. Several methodological is

Shame and Gender Differences in Paths to Youth Suicide: Parents' Perspective.

Risk factors, suicidal behavior, and help-seeking patterns differ between young women and men. We constructed a generic conceptual model of the processes underlying youth suicide, grounded in 78 interviews with parents in 52 consecutive cases of suicide (19 women, 33 men) identified at forensic medical autopsy and compared by sex. We found different forms of shame hidden behind gender-specific masks, as well as gender differences in their paths to suicide. Several interacting factors formed negative feedback loops. Finding no way out, the young persons looked for an "emergency exit." Signs and
