BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Shivering after spinal anesthesia is a common complication and can occur in as many as 40%-70% of patients after regional anesthesia. This shivering, apart from its physiological and hemodynamic effects, has been described as even worse than surgical pain. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of prophylactic use of intravenous (IV) ketamine, dexmedetomidine, and tramadol for prevention of shivering after spinal anesthesia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I and II patients subjected to sp

"Shivers" is a progressive equine movement disorder of unknown etiology. Clinically, horses with shivers show difficulty walking backward, assume hyperflexed limb postures, and have hind limb tremors during backward movement that resembles shivering. At least initially, forward movements are normal. Given that neither the neurophysiologic nor the pathologic mechanisms of the disease is known, nor has a neuroanatomic locus been identified, we undertook a detailed neuroanatomic and neuropathologic analysis of the complete sensorimotor system in horses with shivers and clinically normal control h

Severe hypothermia and an ascending impairment of shivering are previously undescribed clinical signs in hyperacute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in the Lewis rat. These occurred in hyperacute EAE induced by inoculation with guinea pig spinal cord homogenate and heat-killed Bordetella pertussis. Hypothermia was first detected on day 6-7 post-inoculation, within 12-24 h of the onset of neurological signs, and became more severe as the disease progressed. Rectal temperatures less than or equal to 30 degrees C were common at ambient temperatures of 19-22 degrees C. Shivering was a

A 22-year-old muscular karate player was diagnosed to have a tracheal tumor with a diameter of 2.8 cm that existed 2 cm under the glottis and occupied 60% of his trachea. He was scheduled for trachea resection and construction surgery. After awake-fiber intubation, anesthesia was maintained by continuous infusion of propofol and remifentanil, together with thoracic epidural anesthesia (T4-5). After 431 minutes of surgery, 50 mm of trachea was rejected. To prevent him from extending his neck, the surgeon placed stay-sutures between the patient's chin and chest wall. Twenty minutes after the ter

BACKGROUND: Temperature gradients that normally exist between body areas may be altered as a result of heat generated by shivering.
METHODS AND POPULATION: Two core thermal gradients between pulmonary artery and urinary bladder were compared with shivering in 37 coronary artery bypass graft patients. Pulmonary artery and urinary temperature were measured every 15 minutes, and shivering was evaluated electromyographically.
RESULTS: Shivering developed in 28 patients (76%). With shivering the pulmonary artery/urinary bladder temperature ratio was less than 1 but in the nonshivering group was g

Therapeutic hypothermia or targeted temperature management has been used after cardiac arrest to improve neurological outcomes and mortality. However, a side effect of temperature modulation is a centrally mediated shivering response. The Columbia Anti-Shivering Protocol sets up a systematic method of intravenous (IV) and oral medication escalation to suppress this response and preserve the benefits of this therapy. We present the case of a 59-year-old male who began shivering after therapeutic hypothermia for cardiac arrest, leading to a persistent rise in core temperature despite adequate se

1. Four naïve subjects clothed in protective suits were immersed up to the neck in water on twenty-two occasions, the minimum skin temperature was 20 degrees C and the average skin temperature 26 degrees C. Subjects at first rested, initially demonstrating an increase in thermal muscular tone which did not lead to perceptible limb movements. Later, while resting, visible shivering with small unco-ordinated limb movements supervened. The subjects then exercised while still immersed by stationary cycling. 2. Steady-state minute oxygen consumption (VO2) and minute ventilation (VE) were measured o

PURPOSE: About 55% of patients undergoing a Cesarean delivery under spinal or epidural anesthesia will experience shivering, which may interfere with the monitoring of vital signs. Recent studies have shown that dexmedetomidine could potentially help to alleviate shivering associated with anesthesia. We investigated whether dexmedetomidine, an alpha 2-adrenergic agonist, reduces the duration of shivering associated with neuraxial anesthesia during Cesarean delivery.
METHODS: Eighty parturients undergoing Cesarean delivery under neuraxial anesthesia and experiencing shivering were enlisted in

BACKGROUND: Postspinal shivering is a frequent complication of spinal anesthesia (SA) and is particularly relevant in urological procedures, where perioperative heat loss can be exacerbated by irrigation fluids. Modifying the temperature of the intrathecal local anesthetic may affect thermoregulatory responses and the properties of the blockade.
METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial was conducted in 96 patients (ASA I-II, aged 18-60 years) undergoing elective urological procedures under SA. Participants received intrathecal hyperbaric bupivacaine 0.5% (15 mg) c

Obesity (lipotoxicity) results from a chronic imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. It is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM, glucotoxicity) and considered a major risk factor for the development of metabolic complications. Their convergence constitutes "diabesity", representing a major challenge for public health worldwide. Limited treatment efficacy highlights the need for novel, multi-targeted therapies. Non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), mediated by brown and beige adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, has emerged as a promising therapy due to its capacity to

BACKGROUND: The frequency of shivering regarding regional anesthesia is 55%. Newer effective and tolerable options for postspinal anesthesia shivering (PSAS) prophylaxis are necessary to improve patients' quality of care. This research assessed the impact of preemptive mirtazapine versus preemptive dexamethasone to decrease frequency and severity of PSAS in gynecological procedures.
METHODS: 300 patients booked for gynecological procedures under spinal anesthesia (SA) were randomly apportioned into three groups (100 each) to get one preemptive dose of 30 mg mirtazapine tablet (M group), 8 mg

Nesfatin-1 has originally been established as a bioactive peptide interacting with key hypothalamic nuclei and neural circuitries in control of feeding behavior, while its effect on energy expenditure has only recently been investigated. Hence, the aim of this study was to examine whether centrally acting nesfatin-1 can induce β3-adrenergic stimulation, which is a prerequisite for the activation of thermogenic genes and heat release from interscapular brown adipose tissue, key physiological features that underlie increased energy expenditure. This question was addressed in non-fasted mice ster

Per-operative shivering following spinal anaesthesia is a common problem in the operation theatre. Adequate management of shivering during operation is one of the goals of anesthesiologists for the benefit of the patient. Because there are many unpleasant and harmful effects caused by shivering in many patients especially respiratory and cardiac disease patients. For this reason aggressive and optimal treatment of per-operative shivering is essential to reduce the morbidity of the patients. Our observations were that occurrence of shivering was more in younger patients than older patients, thi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Paracetamol (PCM) has an anti-shivering effect and may also exacerbate intraoperative hypothermia. This study compares the incidence of shivering as the primary outcome and the incidence of perioperative hypothermia (<36°C) and the time to the analgesic requirement as secondary outcomes when PCM was administered after induction of anaesthesia or towards the end of surgery.
METHODS: In this randomised study, 225 adult patients of either gender undergoing elective surgical procedures under general anaesthesia with an expected duration of surgery of 1-4 h were studied. They
