Captopril-induced bilateral parotid and submandibular sialadenitis.

Two cases of sialadenitis following treatment with captopril are described. In case 1, an upper chest and facial erythema and dryness of the mouth accompanied the swelling of the salivary glands. In case 2, a conjunctival erythema accompanied the sialadenitis. None of the patients had previously used captopril, and, in both cases, the swelling occurred within the first hour after the drug intake; the patients had a complete recovery within a few hours after captopril was withdrawn. It is possible that the reported effect was caused by a type-B idiosyncratic adverse drug reaction.

Masseter Muscle Size in Chronic Parotid Sialadenitis.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between masseter muscle thickness and parotid duct obstruction resulting in recurrent sialadenitis is not well defined. This study aims to evaluate masseter muscle size in patients with chronic sialadenitis of the parotid and compared to patients without parotid sialadenitis. METHODS: Data was collected retrospectively from patients with symptomatic chronic sialadenitis of the parotid or submandibular glands. Measurements of the masseter and lateral pterygoid muscles were performed on CT or MRI imaging by two investigators who were blinded to the symptomatic gland

Sialadenitis Secondary to Bilateral Hypertrophic Torus Mandibularis.

In this case report, we detail a rare instance of sialadenitis secondary to bilateral hypertrophic torus mandibularis (TM) in a 70-year-old Caucasian male who presented with neck swelling, dysphagia, and weight loss. Radiographic evaluations revealed enlarged TM obstructing Wharton's duct, further complicated by a sialolith. The patient's treatment regimen included antibiotics, oral steroids, and sialogogues, accompanied by surgical removal of the hypertrophic TM and sialoendoscopy, which resulted in significant symptomatic relief and the resolution of sialadenitis. This case emphasizes the im

Acute Transient Sialadenitis After a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

Transient acute sialadenitis after anesthesia, also known as "anesthesia mumps," is a rare phenomenon reported after surgery, typically associated with extensive surgeries. It is a complication that is usually self-resolving but, in rare cases, may lead to airway obstruction. The most common associated causes include dehydration, components of anesthesia, duct obstruction due to positioning, and external compression, among others. Here, we present the case of bilateral parotitis after an elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a 76-year-old male.

Postoperative Acute Submandibular Sialadenitis: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Acute postoperative sialadenitis is a rare complication usually after surgery involving extreme head and neck rotation, such as posterior fossa surgery. It is characterized by the development of swelling in the submandibular region, usually contralateral to the surgical side, either immediately or within hours post-operatively. We report a case of a 43-year-old woman who developed sialadenitis leading to upper airway obstruction in the postoperative period. Further, she developed bilateral neck and face swelling. Dexmedetomidine used as an infusion throughout the surgery could be a

[Updated S2k AWMF guideline on obstructive sialadenitis].

The update of this guideline was an important step to define standards for the use of sialendoscopy and other emerging minimally invasive techniques for the therapy of sialolithiasis and other obstructive salivary gland diseases. The current actualization was necessary to adapt the diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms to the current scientific knowledge. In this article they are presented in a shortened version with a focus on conservative therapeutic measures which are especially relevant for daily practice.

Noninvasive treatment for chronic sialadenitis: Case report.

This reporter expresses a patient with a history of tender neck swelling. After clinical and graphical examinations, the patient was diagnosed with submandibular sialolithiasis. Instead of invasive removal of the gland, a more conservative treatment was used. Eventually, after a 1-year-long follow-up, the patient's conditions were found to be acceptable.

Xanthomatous sialadenitis: Autoimmune- or treatment-induced lesions?

Xanthomatous sialadenitis (XS) is rarely reported. Here we report XS in a case of HLA-B27-positive ankylosing spondylitis showing also anti-MAG-positive polyneuropathy with IgM-kappa dysimmunoglobulinemia/paraproteinemia, lung small cell carcinoma and buccal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The lesions were identified in submandibular and labial minor salivary glands of a neck dissection specimen (made during a buccal 1.7 cm large SCC resection procedure). The oral SCC was resected at 8 months after the diagnosis of the lung small cell carcinoma (with skull dome metastases, revealed by a superio

Ultrasonographic Features of Immunoglobulin G4-Related Sialadenitis.

The aim of this study was to determine the role of ultrasonography in the diagnosis and follow-up evaluation of immunoglobulin G4-related sialadenitis. In this study, 42 patients with immunoglobulin G4-related sialadenitis underwent ultrasonography of the parotid and submandibular glands, and the sonographic appearance was compared with the pathologic findings. Post-treatment ultrasonographic appearance was compared with the pre-treatment findings in 30 patients who received immunomodulatory therapy. The ultrasonographic appearance of the affected glands was divided into five patterns: superfi

Immunoprofile of kuttner tumor (chronic sclerosing sialadenitis).

In the present study, the immunoprofile of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis, also known as Kuttner tumor, was analyzed. Two cases that occurred in the submandibular gland of male patients were submitted to immunohistochemical reactions to different antibodies. Histological examinations showed a submandibular gland exhibiting various degrees of atrophy with destruction of acini, infiltration by inflammatory cells, and periductal fibrosis. Reactions to cytokeratins (CKs) showed acini and duct remnants positive to CKs 7, 8, 19, and 13. CK14 stained myoepithelial cells around preserved acini and in

Lymphoepithelial duct lesions in Sjögren-type sialadenitis.

It is not clear, whether the so-called basal cells of the salivary striated ducts are an independent cell-type distinct from myoepithelial cells, making characterization of the cell proliferation typical of the duct lesions in Sjögren-type sialadenitis/benign lymphoepithelial lesion (BLEL) difficult. An immunohistochemical investigation including different cytokeratin subtypes, alpha-actin, Ki-67 and Bcl-2 was directed at the epithelial cytoskeleton in normal parotid parenchyma (n=8), BLEL (n=12), HIV-associated lymphoepithelial cysts (n=8) and palatine tonsils (n=8). There are profound morpho

Chronic submandibular sialadenitis: ultrastructure and phosphatase histochemistry.

Eleven specimens of chronic submandibular sialadenitis were examined. A reduction in secretory material in acinar cells was seen with increasing atrophy until the acini resembled intercalary ducts. Myoepithelial cells and basement membrane were sometimes more conspicuous. Striated ducts showed a reduction of the folding of the plasma membranes in the basal part, and striated and excretory ducts showed a reduction in mitochondria. This possibly represents a functional atrophy secondary to reduced salivary flow. Very atrophic parenchyma largely consisted of simple cells. Phagosomes and apoptotic

Toll-like receptors 2 and 4, and bacterial proteins in IgG4-related sialadenitis, other types of chronic sialadenitis and sialolithiasis.

BACKGROUND: The association of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis and IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) has resulted in the more frequent identification of IgG4-positivity in submandibular gland inflammations, also uncovering IgG4 overexpression in nonspecific inflammations. These findings lead us to hypothesise that IgG4-positive sialadenitis represents a continuous inflammatory process overlapping histologically with IgG4-RD, possibly differing in aetiology. However, the antigen underlying IgG4 overexpression in IgG4-positive sialadenitis and IgG4-RD remains unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here,

Evaluation of immune microenvironment in IgG4-related sialadenitis.

IgG4-related sialadenitis is a systemic autoimmune disease that can lead to fibro-inflammatory conditions. This study aims to investigate the immune microenvironment and potential signaling pathways associated with IgG4-related sialadenitis. Datasets related to IgG4-related sialadenitis were retrieved from the GEO database. Immune cell infiltration analysis was conducted using the Cell-type Identification by Estimating Relative Subsets of RNA Transcripts (CIBERSORT) method. Differentially immune-related expressed genes (DIEG) and immune-related functional enrichment were identified. Moreover,
