Event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to explore the effects of iconicity and structural visual alignment between a picture-prime and a sign-target in a picture-sign matching task in American Sign Language (ASL). Half the targets were iconic signs and were presented after a) a matching visually-aligned picture (e.g., the shape and location of the hands in the sign COW align with the depiction of a cow with visible horns), b) a matching visually-nonaligned picture (e.g., the cow's horns were not clearly shown), and c) a non-matching picture (e.g., a picture of a swing instead of a cow). Sign language exhibits significant semantic sparsity across both spatial and temporal dimensions. Spatially, task-relevant motion is often concentrated in regions such as the hands and face, while the expansive static background is generally less informative. Temporally, the gesture stream is interspersed with considerable redundant information, such as pauses or slow transitions, meaning key semantics are condensed into a few sparse moments on the temporal axis. However, existing methods typically employ a dense modeling paradigm, failing to fully exploit this inherent property. To this end,

Sign language recognition (SLR) for low-resource languages like Bangla suffers from signer variability, viewpoint variations, and limited annotated datasets. In this paper, we present BdSLW401, a large-scale, multi-view, word-level Bangla Sign Language (BdSL) dataset with 401 signs and 102,176 video samples from 18 signers in front and lateral views. To improve transformer-based SLR, we introduce Relative Quantization Encoding (RQE), a structured embedding approach anchoring landmarks to physiological reference points and quantizes motion trajectories. RQE improves attention allocation by decr

Language can be processed with varying levels of attentional involvement; consequently, the interplay between the language and attentional systems in the brain has been extensively studied in spoken languages. However, in signed languages (SLs), this interplay is less well understood. Here, we use Constructed Action (CA) - a meaning-making strategy based on enactment - as a window into the attentional mechanisms recruited in signed language comprehension. We explored the attentional processing of CA by identifying the sequence of processes involved and in which stage CA and its types might be

BACKGROUND: Although awake surgery is the gold standard for resecting brain tumors in eloquent regions, patients with hearing impairment require special consideration during intraoperative tasks.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of awake surgery using sign language in a 45-year-old right-handed native male patient with hearing impairment and a neoplastic lesion in the left frontal lobe, pars triangularis (suspected to be a low-grade glioma). The patient primarily communicated through sign language and writing but was able to speak at a sufficiently audible level through childhood training.

Mouth activity forms a key component of all sign languages. This can be divided into mouthings, which originate from words in the ambient spoken language, and mouth gestures, which do not. This study examines the relationship between the distribution of mouthings co-occurring with verb signs in British Sign Language (BSL) and various linguistic and social factors, using the BSL Corpus. We find considerable variation between participants and a lack of homogeneity in mouth actions with particular signs. This accords with previous theories that mouthings constitute code-blending between spoken an

With the knowledge that deaf children benefit from early exposure to signed language, questions are raised about the role of specific types of language input that are beneficial in early childhood classrooms. This quasi-experimental study explores the effects of ASL rhyme, rhythm, and handshape awareness activities on 4- to 6-year-old deaf children's ASL phonological awareness. Deaf children received three-week structured activities and four-week teacher-choice activities that targeted handshape awareness. Results yielded evidence that interventions as brief as 12 minutes daily for up to 2 mon

Although in Canada, hearing screening and early intervention are presented as a health need, we question whether young deaf and hard of hearing children's access to language is adequately supported by public health and children's services. The Ontario Infant Hearing Program has the stated mandate of supporting the language development of deaf and hard of hearing infants and young children. However, this program presents parents with early intervention service options involving either spoken or signed language, but not both together. This policy effectively restricts access to sign language lea

Language is often processed in perceptually challenging conditions. Although the neural correlates of speech processing in such conditions have been well studied, this is not the case for sign language. Thus, it is unknown whether the neural mechanisms involved in this process are comparable across language modalities. One reason for the lack of studies in sign language might be attributed to the difficulties in adapting perceptual manipulations from the context of speech to sign language. In the present study, we aim to address the gap in the literature by investigating whether the neural cor

Major communication barriers are often encountered among deaf and/or speech-impaired people, which is particularly serious during emergencies. This study proposes a novel vision-based sign-to-voice conversion that recognizes hand gestures through a convolutional neural network incorporated with advanced preprocessing and transformer-based classification. A custom gesture dataset was created by capturing labeled images and video frames under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, and hand orientations for proper training. Skin filtering, background subtraction, noise removal, and extractio

BACKGROUND: Individuals with hearing impairments may face hindrances in health care assistance, which may significantly impact the prognosis and the incidence of complications and iatrogenic events. Therefore, the development of automatic communication systems to assist the interaction between this population and health care workers is paramount.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically review the evidence on communication systems using human-computer interaction techniques developed for deaf people who communicate through sign language that are already in use or proposed for use in healt

Children's ability to share attention with another social partner (joint attention) plays an important role in language development. However, our understanding of the role of joint attention comes mainly from children learning spoken languages, which gives a very narrow, speech-centric impression of the role of joint attention. This study broadens the scope by examining how deaf children learning a sign language achieve joint attention with their caregivers during natural social interaction, and how caregivers provide word learning opportunities. We analyzed naturalistic play sessions of 54 ca

Sign language is an essential means of communication for individuals with hearing disabilities. However, there is a significant shortage of sign language interpreters in some languages, especially in Saudi Arabia. This shortage results in a large proportion of the hearing-impaired population being deprived of services, especially in public places. This paper aims to address this gap in accessibility by leveraging technology to develop systems capable of recognizing Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) using deep learning techniques. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model to capture the spatio-tempora

An empirical estimate of how many deaf and hard-of-hearing persons use sign language in the USA was obtained a half-century ago, but no study has measured how many people sign regardless of deafness. This study estimated the number of deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing adult signers. Concatenation of the 2010-2018 National Health Interview Surveys was required to provide sufficient sample size. Unadjusted and age-by-sex-adjusted sign language use prevalence across the range of hearing acuity was estimated. Adult sign language use was substantial (2.80%), with its rate of use greater for women

Research involving the general population of people who use a spoken language to communicate has demonstrated that older adults experience cognitive and physical changes associated with aging. Notwithstanding the differences in the cognitive processes involved in sign and spoken languages, it is possible that aging can also affect cognitive processing in deaf signers. This research aims to explore the impact of aging on spatial abilities among sign language users. Results showed that younger signers were more accurate than older signers on all spatial tasks. Therefore, the age-related impact o

Face masks can impact processing a narrative in sign language, affecting several metacognitive dimensions of understanding (i.e., perceived effort, confidence and feeling of understanding). However, to what extent this is modulated by sign language proficiency remains an open question. Thirty deaf adults were administered a narrative in Italian Sign Language (LIS), signed in three different visual conditions: no mask, transparent mask, opaque mask. In addition, they completed a Sentence Reproduction Task in LIS (LIS-SRT) to measure their sign language proficiency. Results showed that some of t

We investigated how the progressive function of the metaphor, the model world of signs, language and culture, link the cell's immunological knowledge with a perceivable concept of the body. Using ethnomethodologically oriented, partly interpretative text analysis, we examined the lymphocyte stimulation test, word clusters in immunology and other medical specialties, the linguistic presentation of the body in German, American and the internet, the presentation of the "self" of the cell in biology and immunology, and protocols of oncological out-patient interviews and chatrooms. Iconic mappings between words and their meanings are far more prevalent than once estimated and seem to support children's acquisition of new words, spoken or signed. We asked whether iconicity's prevalence in sign language overshadows two other factors known to support the acquisition of spoken vocabulary: neighborhood density (the number of lexical items phonologically similar to the target) and lexical frequency. Using mixed-effects logistic regressions, we reanalyzed 58 parental reports of native-signing deaf children's productive acquisition of 332 signs in American Sign Language (ASL; An

Purpose This case study describes the language evaluation and treatment of a 5-year-old boy, Lucas, who is Deaf, uses American Sign Language (ASL), and presented with a language disorder despite native access to ASL and no additional diagnosis that would explain the language difficulties. Method Lucas participated in an evaluation where his nonverbal IQ, fine motor, and receptive/expressive language skills were assessed. Language assessment included both formal and informal evaluation procedures. Language intervention was delivered across 7 weeks through focused stimulation. Results Evaluation
