Effect of sulfur fertilization on chemical composition, ensiling characteristics, and utilization by lambs of sorghum silage.

Effects of S fertilization, 0 or 138 kg of S/ha, as (NH4)2SO4 on chemical composition, ensiling characteristics, and utilization of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) silage by wether lambs was investigated. Pioneer 947' sorghum forage was ensiled at the soft dough growth stage. Sulfur fertilization increased (P < .01) concentrations of S, N, K, Mn, and water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and decreased (P < .05) concentrations of Fe, Cu, Al, and acetic acid after ensiling. Sulfur-fertilized sorghum silage (N:S = 12) and non-S fertilized silage (N:S = 15) were fed alone and supplemented with urea to ac

Rapid quantitative assessment of the distribution of Listeria in silage implicated in a suspected outbreak of listeriosis in calves.

A silage clamp was sampled for the presence of Listeria species. Even though covered by a heavy duty black plastic sheet the top few centimetres of silage were heavily contaminated with Listeria species. In the areas nearest the edges of the sheet the pathogenic species Listeria monocytogenes was found in numbers in excess of 12,000 organisms/g silage. Using the methods of isolation described, pathogenic species of Listeria could be differentiated from non-pathogenic species in three to four days.

Characterization and probiotic potential of thermotolerant lactic acid bacteria from silage for ensiling crop residues.

Paddy straw, though abundantly available in India, is often burnt in fields, despite its potential as valuable feed resource for livestock. Ensiling provides a practical solution for its utilization, but challenges like low moisture, high fibre content, and unfavourable climatic conditions limit its effectiveness. In recent times, microbial-based approaches, particularly involving lactic acid bacteria (LAB), have shown promise in improving silage quality. However, suitable thermotolerant LAB strains that can perform under Indian field conditions remain unexplored. To address this, 45 Gram-posi

Nicosulfuron-driven antibiotic resistance in corn silage: Effect and its mitigation by zinc oxide nanoparticles.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) present in animal feed represent a significant threat to human health via the food chain, and pesticide application in crop production may further accelerate the ARGs dissemination. Corn silage, a primary forage for herbivorous livestock, has been shown to harbor diverse ARGs; however, the impact of pesticide-induced stress and potential mitigation strategies on ARG proliferation remains poorly understood. This study investigated the mechanistic link between nicosulfuron exposure and ARG dynamics in corn silage, as well as the mitigating effects of zinc oxide

Whole-plant flint corn silage inclusion in total mixed rations for pre- and postweaning dairy calves.

Assuming that acetic acid plays a minor role in the development of ruminal epithelium of preweaning dairy calves, the fiber supply for growing calves has been neglected. More research has been done on including starch and nonfibrous carbohydrates in solid feed for preweaning calves. Accordingly, the fiber requirement of these calves is not well known, as diet recommendations vary greatly. Hence, elucidating the effects of including fiber from long particle sizes in the diet may be essential for helping calves overcome the transition challenge during weaning. Forty-five Holstein calves were use

Silage intake, rumination and pseudo-rumination activity in sheep studied by radiography and jaw movement recordings.

1. The eating and ruminating activity of four rams given long-chopped silage ad lib. in two daily meals was studied by jaw movement recordings. The events of rumination and pseudo-rumination were observed by fluoroscopy and by cineradiography. 2. The rate of eating was highest at the beginning of the main meal and then declined gradually. 3. The silage intake level was low. 4. The swallowed silage did not accumulate at the cardiac region but was forced into the dorsal sac of the rumen by the contractions of the reticulum and cranial sac of the rumen. For regurgitation the solid particles had t
