BACKGROUND: Biological materials such as glass ionomer cement (GIC), calcium hydroxide cement (Ca(OH)₂) and tricalcium silicate cement (TCS) have been effective in the indirect pulp treatment (IPT) of advanced carious lesions in molars. GIC has been in use for a long time as a biomimetic material with the added advantage of fluoride release for the treatment of the same.
OBJECTIVES: Our study compared the success of GIC vs Ca(OH)₂ and TCS in IPT of molars in primary and permanent teeth in 4-18-year-old children.
SEARCH: Two researchers, SN and AMJ, independently searched the literature using

Calcium phosphate cement (CPC), a popular injectable bone defect repairing material, has deficiencies in stimulating osteogenesis and angiogenesis. To overcome the weaknesses of CPC, zinc-doped calcium silicate (Zn-CS) which can release bioactive silicon (Si) and zinc (Zn) ions was introduced to CPC. The physicochemical and biological properties of CPC and its composites were evaluated. Firstly, the most effective addition content of calcium silicate (CaSiO3, CS) in promoting the in vitro osteogenesis was first sorted out. On this basis, the most effective Zn doping content in CS for improving

BACKGROUND: Pulp capping is a vital dental procedure used to preserve the vitality of teeth affected by deep caries lesions without irreversible pulpitis. The use of modern bioceramic materials has enhanced the predictability of vital pulp therapy.
AIM: This study aimed to assess the clinical success of two calcium silicate-based cements (NeoPUTTY and e-MTA Putty) as pulp capping materials for indirect pulp capping in carious primary teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Indirect pulp therapy (IPT) was performed on 52 deciduous molars in 26 patients presenting with deep carious lesions. The teeth we

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to histologically examine the tissue reaction of three different calcium silicate cements in the closure of perforations in rat incisor teeth. Material and Methods. An experimental lateral root perforation with pulp exposure was performed in 32 lower incisors of 16 male Wistar albino rats. They were randomly assigned into three test groups (each including eight teeth) that were filled either by Biodentine (BD) or MicroMega mineral trioxide aggregate (MM-MTA) or EndoSequence root repair material putty (ESRRM putty), besides eight unperforated incisors from t

INTRODUCTION: This study assessed the fracture resistance (FR) of teeth with simulated perforating internal resorption cavities repaired with different calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs) and backfilling materials.
METHODS: Ninety-six mandibular premolar teeth were used. Twelve of the teeth were assigned as negative control group. Remaining roots were instrumented with rotary files, and standardized internal resorption cavities were prepared on the middle half of roots with burs. Twelve of the samples were not further interfered and were assigned as a positive control group. The apical 4 mm

BACKGROUND: In recent times, bioceramic calcium silicates have gained attention due to high success rates with pulpotomy in primary teeth.
AIMS: To evaluate and compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of three different bioceramic calcium silicate cements in vital deciduous teeth treated with pulpotomies over a period of 24 months.
DESIGN: Children aged 4-9 years, with deep dentinal caries (ICDAS 4-6) in primary molars, having no history of spontaneous pain or signs of non-vitality were included in the study. Following clinical and radiographic evaluation 117 primary molars diagnosed

METHODS: Two hundred forty specimens were divided into 12 groups and prepared using combinations of HCSCs (mineral trioxide aggregate [MTA], Biodentine, NeoPutty, MTA vital pulp therapy [MTAvpt]) and 3 intermediate layer materials (self-adhesive flowable composite [SAFC], resin-modified glass ionomer [RMGI], and flowable composite [FC]). SBS was measured using a universal testing machine, and fail

CONTEXT: Ultrafast Protooth is a calcium silicate cement with a rapid initial setting time of 2 minutes. Its fluoride release, apatite-forming capability and favourable biocompatibility make it a potential candidate for vital pulp therapy.
AIM: This case series evaluates the coronal pulpotomy outcomes using Ultrafast Protooth in permanent molars having closed apices diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After anaesthetisation, the tooth was isolated and disinfected, and caries were excavated. Vitality was re-assessed intra-operatively based on the bleeding

INTRODUCTION: This in vitro study evaluated the volumetric stability and interfacial adaptation of tricalcium silicate-based cements with different consistencies (sealer and putty) applied using the Lid technique for retrograde filling in apical surgery.
METHODS: Thirty bovine incisors were prepared, obturated, and apically resected to create standardized 3 mm retrograde cavities. Specimens were randomly allocated to three groups (n = 10): BioRoot Flow + BioRoot RCS, EndoSequence BC Sealer + EndoSequence RRM, and Bio-C Sealer + Bio-C Repair. Flowable sealers were injected into the retrocaviti

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the potential mineralising effects of calcium silicate-based dentine replacement material (Biodentine™) in comparison with glass-ionomer cement (GIC) (Fuji IX™) on different human dentine substrates using a multimodal non-invasive optical assessment.
METHODS: Cements were applied on artificially demineralised or naturally carious dentine and stored for 4 weeks in phosphate-rich media +/- tetracycline used for mineralisation labelling. Interfacial dentine was examined from the same sample and location before and after aging using two-photon fluorescence microscopy, f

INTRODUCTION: Effective repair of perforating internal resorption (PIR) requires adequate defect filling; however, the influence of defect location on the filling ability of hydraulic calcium silicate cements (HCSCs) remains unclear. This micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) study evaluated Bio-C Repair (BCR), Biodentine (BD), and white MTA-Angelus (WMTA) in three dimensional-printed tooth replicas with PIR defects in different root thirds. The null hypothesis was that material performance would not differ according to defect location.
METHODS: A maxillary central incisor was instrumented to

Although biocompatible calcium silicate cements (CSCs) and calcium aluminate cements (CACs) may induce local and systemic adverse effects. This study aimed to evaluate the subchronic and chronic effects of experimental CAC and CSC mixtures on rat liver, kidney, brain, and spleen tissue. Two experimental mixtures, CAC with added ZrO2 (ECCA + ZrO2) and CSC with added ZrO2 (ECCS + ZrO2), and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), were implanted intraalveolary in 36 male Wistar rats. Histomorphometry was conducted after 30 and 180 days on liver, kidney, brain, and spleen. Consistent results were observ

BACKGROUND: Traumatic tooth avulsion requires an urgent intervention to replant the tooth. Prolonged post-injury dry extra-oral conditions worsen the prognosis and increase the risk of root resorption. Fluoride has the potential to delay replacement resorption. Calcium silicate cements (CSC) are used to seal the root canal system and to stimulate periapical regeneration in immature open apex teeth (apexification). This report suggests the application of a novel fast-setting CSC with fluoride for apexification in an attempt to hinder root resorption.
CASE REPORT: A delayed replantation of an a

Vital pulp therapy aims to preserve the vitality of dental pulp exposed due to caries, trauma, or restorative procedures. The aim of the present review was to evaluate the clinical, radiographic, and histological outcomes of different calcium silicate-based cements used in vital pulp therapy for both primary and permanent teeth. The review included 40 randomized controlled trials from a search across PubMed, LILACS, and the Cochrane Collaboration, as well as manual searches and author inquiries according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. A critical assessment of studies was conduct
