Immunotoxicity of 180 day exposure to polydimethylsiloxane (silicone) fluid, gel and elastomer and polyurethane disks in female B6C3F1 mice.

Millions of people have been exposed to silicones which are present in consumer goods such as cosmetics and toiletries, processed foods and household products. In addition, silicones have been used extensively in medical practice as a lubricant in tubing and syringes, and as implantable devices. A silicone widely used in medical practice is polydimethylsiloxane. This study was undertaken to determine the immunotoxicologic potential of long term exposure to the principal constituents of breast implants: silicone fluid, silicone gel and silicone elastomer. An alternative covering for devices con

Silicon in human breast tissue surrounding silicone gel prostheses. A scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray investigation of normal, fibrocystic and peri-prosthetic breast tissue.

Implanted silicone breast prostheses leak silicone gel through the intact membrane. In order to determine the exact location and to achieve a semiquantitative estimation of the amount of silicone in the surrounding tissue, a method involving scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) was used. By this method we were able to demonstrate the presence of the element silicon (Si) (main component of silicone, a polymer with a general formula e.g. (CH3[Si(CH3)2O]n Si(CH3)3 along the inner border of vacuoles corresponding to the light microscopic localization o

Clinical Management After Rupture of Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants in a Surgically Treated Cohort: A Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: Breast implant rupture is clinically significant complication that is often asymptomatic making diagnosis challenging. The primary objective of this study was to describe the clinical presentation, preoperative imaging findings, and operative findings in this surgically selected cohort. A secondary objective was to assess the apparent concordance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound findings with intraoperative rupture status in this surgically selected cohort. Additional exploratory analyses examined symptom categories, implant age, and implant placement in relation t

Enhanced Scar Reduction Using Topical Application of Captopril-containing Silicone Gel in a Rabbit Model of Hypertrophic Scars.

Antihypertensive medications, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and calcium channel blockers, have been explored for their potential in treating pathological scars. We compared the scar-reducing effects of topical silicone and captopril (an ACE inhibitor) gel used alone and in combination. Eight New Zealand White rabbits with a total of 80 wounds on both ears were used. The animals were assigned to the control, vehicle, silicone, and captopril 50 mg/g and 50 mg/g captopril-containing silicone groups (n = 16 per group). Treatment began on day 28 post-scarring. The scar el

Evaluating efficacy and safety of the topical silicone gel containing onion extract in the treatment of post-cesarean surgical scars.

BACKGROUND: Cesarean section scars are post-surgical problems in women. Many active ingredients have been found to diminish scar formation. Clinical investigations on the onion extract have gained more attention due to its properties, such as improvement of scar appearance and texture. However, published studies evaluating the usefulness of the onion extract in the treatment of scars are controversial. METHODS: The three-month study period followed a prospective, randomized, and double-blinded design. Each enrolled subject's post-cesarean completely sealed wounds were divided into two halves

Silicone gel breast implant rupture presenting as a fluctuant back mass after latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction.

The authors describe a patient who presented with acute onset of a lower back fluctuant mass 12 years after breast reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap and silicone gel implant. Aspiration and subsequent surgical exploration revealed this mass to be free-flowing silicone gel within a cavity that was confluent with the breast implant capsule through an axillary tunnel. Excision of the back cavity, explantation with subtotal capsulectomy, and implant replacement resolved the problem. Although distant migration of extracapsular silicone gel from the breast to the axilla, a

Autoimmune connective tissue disease and connective tissue disease-like illnesses after silicone gel augmentation mammoplasty.

Since first reported in 1982, published anecdotal reports have appeared with increasing frequency of patients in whom autoimmune connective tissue diseases developed after mammary augmentation with silicone gel-filled elastomer envelope-type prostheses. Although scleroderma has been reported most often, other diagnoses have included systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and mixed connective tissue disease. Other patients have ill-defined connective tissue-like illnesses often referred to as "human adjuvant disease." The occurrence of dermatomyositis and polymy

Silicon dioxide, sodium selenite and citric acid vaginal gel, HPV infection, and cervical preinvasive disease: a narrative review.

Cervical cancer continues to be a major public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It is mainly caused by persistent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Screening has been the most effective strategy to reduce mortality, but over the last 2 decades, vaccination has emerged as an important adjunct, helping to decrease incidence and mortality. Given the natural history of HPV infection, most low-grade lesions will spontaneously resolve over time; therefore, observation is the preferred approach for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. Some authors have

Silicone elastomer gel impregnated with 20(S)-protopanaxadiol-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers for ordered diabetic ulcer recovery.

Inefficient diabetic ulcer healing and scar formation remain a challenge worldwide, owing to a series of disordered and dynamic biological events that occur during the process of healing. A functional wound dressing that is capable of promoting ordered diabetic wound recovery is eagerly anticipated. In this study, we designed a silicone elastomer with embedded 20(S)-protopanaxadiol-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (PPD-NS) to achieve ordered recovery in scarless diabetic ulcer healing. The nanostructured lipid carriers were prepared through an emulsion evaporation-solidification method and

Intense pulsed light vs silicone gel sheet in the management of hypertrophic scars: an interventional comparative trial in the Indian population.

Introduction: Hypertrophic scars are abnormal scars that are a source of great functional, psychological and financial burden to the patient. Currently available treatment modalities are either very cumbersome to use or have not provided very satisfactory results. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy for the management of hypertrophic scars has been recently introduced. However, most of the studies available are from the Western population. In this trial, we aim to study the effect of IPL on the South Indian population with darker skin and compare it with an existing treatment modality (silicone

Comparative effect of topical silicone gel and topical tretinoin cream for the prevention of hypertrophic scar and keloid formation and the improvement of scars.

BACKGROUND: Numerous modalities have been used to treat keloids and hypertrophic scars; however, optimal treatment has not yet been established. Therefore, prevention is the mainstay. Recently, silicone gel and tretinoin cream have been shown to be useful for the prevention of hypertrophic scars and keloids. However, there has been no comparative study of the two topical agents thus far. OBJECTIVE: To determine and compare the effectiveness of silicone gel and tretinoin cream for the prevention of hypertrophic scars and keloids resulting from postoperative wounds and for scar improvement.
