Cytological and isoenzyme analysis of the Bucay and Quevedo cytotypes of the Onchocerciasis vector Simulium exiguum (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Ecuador.

Four cytotypes of Simulium exiguum occur in Ecuador, where this morphospecies is the primary vector of onchocerciasis. In this paper, we give the first full description of the banding pattern of the larval polytene chromosomes of the Quevedo cytotype and assess its degree of genetic separation from the Bucay cytotype. Both cytotypes differ from the chromosomal standard sequence (of the Cayapa cytotype) by the fixed inversions IIL-5 and IIL-6. The Quevedo cytotype additionally differs from the standard and Bucay cytotypes by possessing a differentiated X chromosome, which is indicated by the in

Temporary small-scale colonization of the Beffa form of the Simulium damnosum theobald complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Africa.

Two populations of the Beffa form of Simulium damnosum s.l. were colonized on a small scale for the first time in Africa. The colonies survived for three and five generations, respectively. Information gained led to improvements in adult handling techniques which proved adequate for colony maintenance despite the small numbers reared. Nevertheless, large scale rearings are required to avoid inbreeding and to produce sufficient numbers for experimental purposes.

Studies on the biology of Simuliidae (Diptera) at the Santiago onchocerciasis focus in Ecuador, with special reference to the vectors and disease transmission.

A survey showed the presence of seven simuliid species in the onchocerciasis focus in Ecuador Simulium exiguum and S. quadrivittatum were the two most common anthropophilic species and were shown to be both experimental and natural vectors of Onchocerca volvulus. S. antillarum only occasionally bit man. Observations were made on the biology of the two vector species and it was evident that S. exiguum was the primary vector of onchocerciasis in the rainy season. The relevance of these findings to the epidemiology and control of onchocerciasis in Ecuador are discussed.

Morphology and Polytene Chromosomes of a New Species of Simulium (Trichodagmia) (Diptera: Simuliidae) from the Espinhaço Mountains of Brazil.

The species richness of black flies in the Simulium (Trichodagmia) orbitale (Diptera: Simuliidae) species group is greatest in southern Brazil, where 9 of 19 species are found. A new species in the S. orbitale group was collected during a survey of black flies in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, in the Espinhaço Mountains, an area rich in endemic taxa. The new species is morphologically similar to Simulium guianense Wise (Diptera: Simuliidae), the main vector of the causal agent of onchocerciasis in Brazil and Venezuela. It can be identified in the male by the unpatterned scutum and slightly concav

Confirmation and identification of parasitic stages of obligate endobionts (Harpellales) in blackflies (Simuliidae) by means of rRNA sequence data.

Over the last 35y, the life cycle of endosymbiotic gut fungi (Harpellales) has been expanded to include cyst stages associated with the developing ovaries. Ovarian cysts (chlamydospore stages) have been identified after germination and production of asexual trichospores in vitro, but germination is not always successful, and spores exhibit morphological variation. Sequence data (for partial 18S and 28S rRNA genes) were generated for these putative stages of Harpellales using ungerminated cysts from adult blackflies and germinated cysts associated with field-collected blackfly egg masses. A new species of black fly in the Simulium (Simulium) melanopus species-group (Diptera: Simuliidae) from Sumatra, Indonesia.

During revisionary work on black flies in Sumatra, Indonesia, the species formerly identified as Simulium (Simulium) bishopi Takaoka and Davies, which was originally described from Peninsular Malaysia and assigned to the S. melanopus species-group, was reevaluated by morphologically reexamining two females, one male, and their pupal exuviae and cocoons. The results reveal that this new species is distinguished from S. (S.) bishopi in the male by the smaller number of upper-eye (large) facets in 15 vertical columns and 16 horizontal rows, ventral plate constricted basally when viewed caudally,

Seasonal and diurnal biting activities and zoonotic filarial infections of two Simulium species (Diptera: Simuliidae) in northern Thailand.

Seasonal and daily biting activity patterns, and natural filarial infections of adult black flies attracted to human bait were investigated at Ban Pang Faen, a rural area in Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand. Collections were carried out twice a month from 0600 to 18-00 hours from January 2005 to February 2006. Among ten Simulium species collected, S. nodosum and S. asakoae were predominant occupying 57.3% and 37.2% of the total 16,553 females, respectively. These two predominant species showed different patterns in seasonal abundance: majority of S. nodosum (86.7%) were collected in ho

Development of Onchocerca volvulus (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) in the West African black fly Simulium yahense (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Liberia.

Simulium yahense black flies infected with microfilaria of Onchocerca volvulus were kept in a defined insectary environment in Liberia, West Africa. A daily sample of infected flies was dissected for larvae developing in the thoracic muscles and examined for growth in stadial development. Microfilariae ingested by black flies transformed to the L1 larval stage without molting. Successive larval development included molting to the L2 stage and, finally, to the L3 stage, which was infective in humans. The cephalic cap, consisting of a laterally located hook and central stoma, occurs in the first

[Natural vector capacity level of Simulium damnosum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae) at the ecology station of Tai (Côte d'Ivoire)].

Several studies have been carried out on the transmission of Onchocerciasis by Simulium damnosum s.l. in the forest zone of Côte d'Ivoire. This study, carried out in 1979-1980 was devoted to determine the risk of onchocerciasis transmission inside and outside the rain forest of Taï (5 degrees 50' N-7 degrees 25' W). We present the vectorial capacity of S. sanctipauli in the region of Taï before massive flow of refugees from areas of Liberia without any control Programme. The results of micromorphological technics for determination of S. damnosum adults, showed that mainly females of S. sanctip

Estimating the gonotrophic cycle and survivorship of Simulium ochraceum (Diptera: Simuliidae) during routine vector surveillance in southern Mexico.

The gonotrophic cycle, survivorship, and daily parity rate of Simulium ochraceum were estimated from specimens collected during routine vector surveillance in southern Mexico, using a vertical (time-specific) method. Series of sequential data analysis on parity of the entomological data obtained in February 1994 showed the highest significant (P < 0.05 alpha) correlation indices (r = 0.63 and r = 0.67) for a 4-day time lag, indicating that the mean gonotrophic cycle length corresponded to 4 days. Daily survival rate was estimated to be 0.80, the survival to infective age (12 days) to be 6.9%,

Vector competence of Simulium metallicum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae) in two endemic areas of human onchocerciasis in northern Venezuela.

Experimental infections of Simulium metallicum s.l. with Onchocerca volvulus were carried out in two onchocerciasis foci, Altamira and Trincheras, in northern Venezuela, to determine vector competence. Wild-caught flies, fed on infected volunteers, were maintained in the laboratory for 13-15 days at 27 degrees C. Parasite development was complete but asynchronous and retarded. No differences in the vector competence of the two populations of S. metallicum s.l. were found. However, a less efficient development of the parasite occurred during the dry season at both localities. The distribution o

Molecular Identification of Onchocerciasis Vectors (Diptera: Simuliidae) from the Central Himalayan Landscape of India: A DNA Barcode Approach.

Background: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are a notorious group of blood-sucking insects acting as vectors of various diseases in humans and other animals, most notable being Onchocerciasis. Due to its medical and veterinary significance, accurate and quick species identification is of utmost importance in the field of black fly research. DNA barcoding is one such taxonomic tool, aiding in quick and efficient species identification using molecular methods. Despite sporadic reports of ocular and cutaneous Onchocerciasis, especially from North-East India, Indian Simuliidae has been understud

Two new cytoforms of the Simulium damnosum complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) from Malawi and Tanzania and potential onchocerciasis vectors.

During a distribution survey of Simulium damnosum s.l. around the Tukuyu onchocerciasis focus at the northern tip of Lake Malawi/Nyasa (Tanzania), we discovered two new cytoforms of the S. damnosum complex in onchocerciasis-free areas. The Nyika form is related to Simulium thyolense, a vector of onchocerciasis, and can be identified by the new inversion 3L-L on the long arm of chromosome 3. It was found breeding in five rivers in northern Malawi and neighbouring Tanzania and is assumed to be zoophilic. The Njombe form represents a member of the Sanje group of the complex and is characterized b

A mid-arm interchange as a potential reproductive isolating mechanism in the medically important Simulium neavei group (Diptera: Simuliidae).

The Simulium neavei group is medically important as a vector of human onchocerciasis and is unique among blackflies because of the attachment to freshwater crabs during parts of the larval and pupal life cycle stages. Detailed larval salivary gland polytene chromosome maps are presented for two taxa designated S. neavei Amani form A and S. neavei Amani form B, which are probably synonymous with the previously described morphospecies, S. nyasalandicum and S. woodi, respectively. Simulium neavei Amani form B differs from S. neavei Amani form A by three paracentric inversions, a large deletion an
