Humpback whales increase singing rate in response to seismic air guns.

Seismic air guns, widely used in offshore resource exploration, are a major source of anthropogenic noise in marine environments. For some cetaceans, these impulsive sounds can disrupt acoustic communication critical for breeding and social interactions. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce long, highly structured songs as part of their reproductive display, often within areas overlapping seismic activity. This study investigated whether air gun noise alters the organisation and rate of humpback whale song. Four temporal parameters; inter-call interval, phrase duration, theme

Adaptation and Validation of the Hindi Singing Voice Handicap Index-10.

OBJECTIVE: To adapt the original singing voice handicap index-10 (SVHI-10) into Hindi and validate it among singers without voice problems and those with dysphonia. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analytic study design. METHOD: The Hindi translation of the original SVHI-10 was conducted following standardized guidelines. The study included 75 singers, comprising two groups: singers without voice problems (NS) (n = 50) and dysphonic singers (DS) (n = 25). Psychometric evaluation of the Hindi SVHI-10 was performed, including assessments of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, criterion

Dementia-Associated Compulsive Singing (DACS): Presentation of Unpublished Clinical Cases Miniseries.

Dementia-associated compulsive singing (DACS) is a neurotransmettitorial-based behavioral disturbance, characterized by an unabating melodic expression, occurring in patients that suffer from evolved dementia. Previously described only as a "punding" aspect of the dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) in the Parkinson's disease (PD), compulsive singing has now been described, for the first time, in four non-PD patients effectively treated with Haloperidol or Quetiapine. Unlike the DDS-associated conditions, in our cases DACS is not pharmacologically induced, being that all patients were L-dopa

CPPS and Voice-Source Parameters: Objective Analysis of the Singing Voice.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years cepstral analysis and specific cepstrum-based measures such as smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) has become increasingly researched and utilized in attempts to determine the extent of overall dysphonia in voice signals. Yet, few studies have extensively examined how specific voice-source parameters affect CPPS values. OBJECTIVE: Using a range of synthesized tones, this exploratory study sought to systematically analyze the effect of fundamental frequency (fo), vibrato extent, source-spectrum tilt, and the amplitude of the voice-source fundamental on CPPS v

Hypernasality in singing among children with cleft palate: a preliminary study.

The aim of this study was to document differences in hypernasality during speaking and singing among children with cleft palate and to compare nasality score ratings of trained and untrained listeners. Twenty subjects with cleft palate aged between 7 and 12 years participated in this study. Audio recordings were made of the children reading a passage and singing a common local song, both in the Malay language. The degree of hypernasality was judged through perceptual assessment. Three trained listeners (a speech therapist, a classical singer, and a linguistic expert - all academicians) and two

Experiences of Persons With Parkinson's Disease Engaged in Group Therapeutic Singing.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that leads to altered neural control of movement, including the control of voice, respiration, and swallowing. There is a prevalent need to provide therapy for voice, respiration, and swallowing difficulties because current pharmacological and surgical treatments do not effectively treat these impairments. Previous research has demonstrated that singing may be a treatment option to target voice, respiratory, and swallowing impairments, as well as quality of life. However, participants' perspectives related to reas

Respiratory and Acoustical Differences Between Belt and Neutral Style of Singing.

OBJECTIVES: Belt is a style of singing commonly used in nonclassical genres. Its respiratory, phonatory, and resonatory characteristics are unclear. DESIGN: Basic research. METHODS: Six female singers, professionally performing in the belt styles since many years, sang an excerpt of a song in belt and nonbelt/neutral style, two times with the lyrics and two times replacing the lyrics with /pae/ syllables. On separate channels, recordings were made of audio, oral pressure, and rib cage and abdominal wall movements, as picked up by respiratory inductive plethysmography. Lung volume and breathi

Song sharing and singing strategies in the winter wren Troglodytes troglodytes.

The winter wren is a common forest bird living in groups of few adjacent neighbours during the breeding season. Inside each group, males vocally interact in the context of both territorial holding and sexual competition, forming a complex communication network. To study this network, we first analysed song type and syllable repertoires within and between distinct groups. We found a limited number of song types highly stereotyped in length, syntax and syllable composition, frequently shared among neighbours. Between groups, song type and syllable repertoires sharing decreased with increasing di

An Old Myth: Prediction of the Correct Singing Voice Classification. True or not?

OBJECTIVE: Predicting the correct singing voice classification based on laryngoscopy is an old myth. The aim of this study was to evaluate if a professional phoniatrician/laryngologist can predict the correct singing voice classification only from laryngoscopy and to analyze different anatomical parameters between professional sopranos and altos to determine whether a multivariate analysis of anatomical parameters can predict the singing register. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study METHODS: We included 49 professional female singers (25 sopranos, 24 altos). Laryngoscopic images were shown to pro

The Impact of Tonsillectomy on the Adult Singing Voice: Acoustic and Aerodynamic Measures.

OBJECTIVE: Singers undergoing tonsillectomy are understandably concerned about possible sequelae to their voice. The surgical risks of laryngeal damage from intubation and upper airway scarring are valid reasons for singers to carefully consider their options for treatment of tonsil-related symptoms. No prior studies have statistically assessed objective voice outcomes in a group of adult singers undergoing tonsillectomy. This study determined the impact of tonsillectomy on the adult singing voice by determining if there were statistically significant changes in preoperative versus postoperati

Singing therapy can be effective for a patient with severe nonfluent aphasia.

Patients with severe aphasia are rarely treated using speech therapy. We used music therapy to continue to treat a 79-year-old patient with chronic severe aphasia. Interventions 1, 2, and 3 were to practice singing a song that the patient knew, to practice singing a song with a therapist, and to practice saying a greeting using a song with lyrics, respectively. In addition, practice of uttering names of body parts was initiated using touch and rhythm. After intervention 1, the patient could sing spontaneously and repeat lyrics. After intervention 2, she could sing with the therapist, and sing

Are real-time displays of benefit in the singing studio? An exploratory study.

This article reports on an exploratory research project to evaluate the usefulness or otherwise of real-time visual feedback in the singing studio. The primary purpose of the work was not to optimize the technology for this application, but to work alongside teachers and students to study the impact of real-time visual feedback technology use on the students' learning experiences. An action research methodology was used to explore the benefit of real-time displays over an extended period. The experimental phase of the work was guided by a Liaison Panel of teachers and academics in the areas of

Acoustic analyses on German vowels in read speech, recited speech, and singing.

On the continuum of hyper- and hypoarticulation, speech production is adjusted based on the environment and the listener to ensure intelligibility with minimal articulatory effort. The current study examines 13 German vowels produced by 16 professional female singers in read speech, recited speech, and singing. Stimuli consisted of ten original extracts from German classical art songs. The vowels' first two formants were analyzed, comparing across the three conditions. Furthermore, Euclidean distances were calculated for all vowels. Results generally indicate more hyperarticulation in recited

Group therapeutic singing improves clinical motor scores in persons with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports suggest that group therapeutic singing (GTS) may have a positive effect on motor symptoms in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a single session of GTS on clinical motor symptoms. METHODS: Clinical motor symptom assessment was completed immediately before and after 1 hour of GTS in 18 participants. RESULTS: A significant decrease in average scores for gait and posture and tremor, but not speech and facial expression or bradykinesia was revealed. CONCLUSION: These results support the notion that GTS is a beneficial adjuv
