Shear-wave elastography - virtual touch tissue quantification of fetal placentas with a single umbilical artery.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the elasticities of fetal placentas with a single umbilical artery using the Virtual Touch Tissue Quantification (VTTQ) technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnant women with fetuses with a single umbilical artery (SUA) and pregnant women with fetuses having three vessel cord (3VC) at 18-22 weeks of gestation were enrolled in the research. The placentas were evaluated and divided into three equal parts as the inner 1/3 of the placenta (fetal edge), the outer 1/3 of the placenta (maternal edge) and the central 1/3 of the placenta (central part). Fetal growth restriction and a single umbilical artery are independent predictors of hypospadias during pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the association between hypospadias and small fetuses, as well as the pathological implications of fetal growth restriction (FGR). Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between hypospadias and small fetuses using a database of fetal ultrasound and obstetric events. METHODS: A cohort of male singleton infants delivered after 22 weeks of gestation at Keio University Hospital between 2013 and 2019 was retrospectively reviewed. FGR was defined according to the Delphi criteria. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the significant predic

Prevalence of single umbilical artery, clinical outcomes and its risk factors: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Single umbilical artery (SUA) is found in 0.5-6% of all pregnancies worldwide. Although the association of SUA with some congenital malformations is mainly accepted, its effect on pregnancy/neonatal outcomes is still controversial. OBJECTIVE: This is the first study aimed to approximate the SUA prevalence in southern part of Iran. SUA epidemiologic features accompanied by some of its effects on pregnancy/neonatal outcomes are investigated as well. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data from two referral centers in Southern Iran were analyzed. In total, 1,469 p

Perinatal Outcomes of Small for Gestational Age Neonates Born With an Isolated Single Umbilical Artery.

Objective: To investigate pregnancy outcomes of small for gestational age (SGA) neonates born with isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) compared to SGA neonates without iSUA. Study Design: This was a population-based retrospective cohort analysis. The study group was defined as a singleton SGA neonate born with iSUA, while an SGA neonate without iSUA comprised the comparison group. We evaluated adverse perinatal outcomes in all SGA neonates born at the Soroka University Medical Center between the years 1998-2013. Multiple gestations, fetuses with known congenital malformations or chromosoma

Impact of isolated single umbilical artery on pregnancy outcome and delivery in full-term births.

AIM: To identify whether an isolated single umbilical artery (ISUA) impacts pregnancy outcome and delivery mode in single and full-term births. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out on 93,592 pregnant women (singleton pregnancy; full-term birth; no known fetal chromosomal and structural anomalies) who gave birth between January 2011 and January 2012 in 39 hospitals within China. Pregnancy outcomes and modes of delivery were compared between research (313 cases with ISUAs) and comparison groups (1,252 cases with three-vessel cords in a 1:4 ratio randomly matched by parity). RESULTS:

Single aberrant umbilical artery in a fetus with severe caudal defects: sirenomelia or caudal dysgenesis.

We describe a 1,000-g twin fetus with absent kidneys and ureters, anal atresia and minimal evidence of external genitalia, and hypoplastic lower limbs with absent feet. A postmortem arteriogram showed a large single umbilical artery in direct continuation with the abdominal aorta, a unique anomaly almost always related to sirenomelia. We discuss the possible diagnosis of this case as sirenomelia or caudal dysgenesis, and the controversy as to whether they are two related or separate entities.

Hypercoiling and Single Umbilical Artery Associated With Fetal Placental Malperfusion and Growth Restriction: A Case Report.

Hypercoiling of the umbilical cord can lead to fetal growth restriction and stillbirth because the cord is vulnerable to blood flow disturbances caused by external forces. A single umbilical artery (SUA) is a relatively common abnormality; however, isolated SUA is associated with fetal growth restriction and stillbirth. We report a case of fetal growth restriction with both SUA and hypercoiling. A 27-year-old primigravida was evaluated at 37 weeks of gestation. Prenatal ultrasonography revealed a small-for-gestational-age fetus with a single umbilical artery and a hypercoiled umbilical cord. C

Prenatal diagnosis of single umbilical artery complicated by intrauterine growth retardation and preterm labor: Case report.

Fetuses with single umbilical artery (SUA) at great risk of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) and prematurity. A 24-years-old woman, 28 weeks' gestation, presented to the Ahmadi hospital, Kuwait, with history of preterm premature rupture of fetal membranes (PPROM). After exclusion of the PPROM, the ultrasound scan of the studied woman showed; asymmetrical IUGR with SUA. The diagnosis of SUA confirmed by the color flow Doppler. She delivered spontaneously at 36 weeks+2, and a cut section in the umbilical cord done to confirm the diagnosis of SUA. The congen

Congenital heart disease and adverse perinatal outcome in fetuses with confirmed isolated single functioning umbilical artery.

To examine the association between isolated single umbilical artery (SUA) and congenital heart disease/adverse perinatal outcome in an Australian tertiary centre. The study population was comprised of fetuses diagnosed with SUA at the mid-trimester scan between May 2003 and March 2009 during detailed ultrasound examination at The Royal Women's Hospital Melbourne, Australia. Colour Doppler was used to visualise the umbilical arteries adjacent to the fetal bladder and in a section of a free loop of cord. The diagnosis of SUA was confirmed on histopathology examination of the placenta and umbilic

The effects of isolated single umbilical artery on first and second trimester aneuploidy screening test parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Reliability of first and second trimester screening tests largely depends on accurate estimation of maternal serum marker values. Reduced reliability could lead redundant invasive tests or misdiagnosis. Adjustments of serum marker values for confounding factors like insulin-dependent diabetes, maternal weight or maternal rhesus status are essential. We aimed to investigate whether isolated single umbilical artery alters first and second trimester test parameters or not. METHODS: Routine detailed obstetric ultrasonographies performed were retrospectively screened for this study. Amo

Fetal bilateral renal agenesis, phocomelia, and single umbilical artery associated with cocaine abuse in early pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Maternal cocaine abuse in pregnancy is associated with complications such as intrauterine growth retardation, abruptio placentae, and preterm delivery. CASE: We report what is, to our knowledge, the first published observation of fetal bilateral renal agenesis associated with a vascular disruption syndrome comprising upper limb reduction defect and a single umbilical artery following maternal cocaine abuse in early pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: This constellation in a fetus aborted at 18 weeks extends the spectrum of complications possibly associated with cocaine abuse in pregnancy.

Postnatal development of fetuses with a single umbilical artery: differences between malformed and non-malformed infants.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a single umbilical artery (SUA) is a fetal soft marker of congenital abnormalities. Among the most common related malformations, there are cardiological, nephrourological and digestive anomalies, most of which are considered to have a vascular etiology. There is an association between increased incidence of intrauterine growth retardation and adverse perinatal indicators, but whether this association is due to related anomalies or isolated SUA (iSUA) is controvisal. METHODS: We reviewed 96 cases of iSUA and non-isolated SUA (niSUA), diagnosed in a period of two yea

Diagnosis of single umbilical artery and risk of foetal congenital malformations by prenatal ultrasound: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Single umbilical artery (SUA) is strongly associated with foetal structural abnormalities; however, the exact pattern of this association has not been described. We aimed to investigate the occurrence of malformations in singleton pregnancies with SUA in China and to study the association between the absent side of the umbilical artery and foetal malformations. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of singleton pregnancies for which routine first-trimester anatomical screening was performed at 11+ 0-13+ 6 gestational weeks and, if the pregnancy continued, a second-trimester scan

Is echocardiography necessary for all single umbilical artery fetuses? A retrospective study in a selected Chinese population.

AIM: Previous evidence on the relationship between single umbilical artery (SUA) and congenital heart disease (CHD) is controversial. We thus conducted a retrospective study to explore the potential risk factors associated with CHD in SUA fetuses, and verify if all these SUA fetuses should be referred for detail fetal echocardiography. METHODS: We reviewed medical records of SUA fetuses referred to Xinhua Hospital for fetal echocardiography between September 2009 and February 2014. All the pregnancies were divided into two groups of CHD and non-CHD according to the results of fetal echocardio

Case Report: Pre- and postnatal management of an allantoic cyst with patent urachus and single umbilical artery.

Patent urachus is a rare congenital abnormality. Since its first description by Cabriolus in 1550, few cases have been reported. A 26-year-old Vietnamese primigravida presented at 20 weeks of gestation for evaluation of a cystic mass in the umbilical cord, which was first discovered at week 13 of pregnancy by ultrasound scan. The cystic mass originated from the root of the umbilical cord, connected to the urinary bladder, and no intestinal contents were enclosed within. Doppler ultrasound assessment showed that the single umbilical artery existed within the normal range. The progression of the

Prenatal diagnosis of monosomy 10q25 associated with single umbilical artery and sex reversal: report of a case.

The association of rare chromosomal rearrangements involving a specific 10q breakpoint with a single umbilical artery (SUA) and sex reversal has never been reported. This report describes the case of a fetus with prenatal ultrasound features of severe intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), congenital heart disease, and SUA. Fetal blood study revealed de novo deletion of 10q25 and a 46,XY karyotype, while ultrasound demonstrated female genitalia. Based on these findings, sex reversal was diagnosed. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification revealed the presence of the sex-determining regio
