Female condom introduction and sexually transmitted infection prevalence: results of a community intervention trial in Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the impact on sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence of a female condom introduction and risk-reduction program at Kenyan agricultural sites. DESIGN: We conducted a cluster-randomized trial to determine whether a replicable, community-level intervention would reduce STI prevalence. METHODS: Six matched pairs of tea, coffee and flower plantations were identified. The six intervention sites received an information/motivation program with free distribution of female and male condoms, and six control sites received only male condoms and related information. Partici

The evaluation of the Woman's Condom marketing approach: What value did peer-led interpersonal communication add to the promotion of a new female condom in urban Lusaka?

During a mass media campaign accompanying the launch of the Maximum Diva Woman's Condom (WC) in Lusaka, Zambia, a cluster-randomized evaluation was implemented to measure the added impact of a peer-led interpersonal communication (IPC) intervention on the awareness and uptake of the new female condom (FC). The WC and mass media campaign were introduced simultaneously in 40 urban wards in April 2016; half of the wards were randomly assigned to the treatment (IPC intervention) with cross-sectional surveys conducted before (n = 2,364) and one year after (n = 2,430) the start of the intervention.

Women, economic hardship and the path of survival: HIV/AIDS risk behavior among women receiving HIV/AIDS treatment in Uganda.

The results are presented from a 2005 survey of 377 women in four HIV/AIDS treatment programs in Uganda. The aim of the study was to explore women's economic hardships and the association with four sexual risk behaviors: whether a woman was sexually active in the last 12 months, whether a condom was used during the last sex act, whether she reported having had a sexual partner in the last six months who she suspected had multiple partners and report of forced, coercive or survival sex in the last six months. Few women were sexually active (34%), likely due to the high proportion of widows (49%

Anal use of the female condom: does uncertainty justify provider inaction?

Despite limited safety data and the absence of efficacy data, several studies have reported that the female condom is being used for anal sex by men who have sex with men. We describe providers' awareness of female condom use during anal sex among their clients and their experiences in counseling clients. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 78 health-care providers recruited from various health-care delivery systems in New York City: a family planning agency, a sexually transmitted infection agency, a hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology clinic, and two community-based AIDS servic

Pregnancy in HIV clinical trials in Sub Saharan Africa: failure of consent or contraception?

OBJECTIVE: Higher than expected pregnancy rates have been observed in HIV related clinical trials in Sub-Saharan Africa. We designed a qualitative study to explore the factors contributing to high pregnancy rates among participants in two HIV clinical trials in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Female and male participants enrolled in one of two clinical HIV trials in south-west Uganda were approached. The trials were a phase III microbicide efficacy trial among HIV negative women using vaginal gel (MDP); and a trial of primary prevention prophylaxis for invasive cryptococcal disease using flucona

Safety of a condom uterine balloon tamponade (ESM-UBT) device for uncontrolled primary postpartum hemorrhage among facilities in Kenya and Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. While evidence on uterine balloon tamponade efficacy for severe hemorrhage is encouraging, little is known about safety of this intervention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of an ultra-low-cost uterine balloon tamponade package (named ESM-UBT) for facility-based management of uncontrolled postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in Kenya and Sierra Leone. METHODS: Data were collected on complications/adverse events in all women who had an ESM-UBT device placed among 92

Female condom use in the rural sex industry in China: analysis of users and non-users at post-intervention surveys.

Changes in sexual attitudes and behaviors and resurgence of the sex industry in China have increased concerns about HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STI) epidemics. Little attention has been paid to the significant and growing sex industry in rural China. Promotion of barrier protection in this context is most effective to prevent STIs and pregnancy. The female condom (FC) is a barrier method that gives women more autonomy in its application, and has other advantages, but has been little promoted and tested in high risk contexts in China. The China/US Women's Health Project was de

Short-term acceptability of the female condom among staff and patients at a New York City Hospital.

An acceptability study of the female condom undertaken at New York's Harlem Hospital between August 1993 and February 1994 enrolled 52 women aged 18-57, 41 of whom (79%) used the female condom at least once. Of these, one-half used the female condom at least three times and 40% used it once; on average, women used it 2.4 times. Two-thirds of users liked the female condom either very much or somewhat, 20% were neutral and 15% stated that they did not like it. One-half of the women reported that their partner liked the device, while 17% said he felt neutral about it and approximately one-quarter

Predictive factors associated with sexual activity and consistent condom use during travel abroad: a cross-sectional survey of young Canadian adults.

BACKGROUND: For young adults seeking new experiences, international travel provides opportunities for casual sexual encounters. The aim of this study was to identify the predictive factors associated with travel-associated sex and consistent condom use in a non-random sample of single and partnered young travelers. METHODS: Sexually-active Canadians, aged 18-25 years, who traveled abroad in 2016, were purposively recruited to participate in an online survey. Two binomial logistic regressions were performed to examine the demographic, sexual health and lifestyle factors associated with (1) hav

Predictors of female condom utilisation among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in Rakai district, Uganda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The female condom serves as a dual protective device, preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, unintended pregnancies and other sexually transmitted infections (STIS). When it comes to sexual protection and contraception, the female condom is an essential tool for women's empowerment. Females are more susceptible than males to acquiring STIs due to their biological makeup. Females are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse following substance use. The uptake of female condoms has been a significant challenge in Uganda, and their uptake remains low. Limited research exists on the subject

[Understanding and reaching young clandestine sex workers in Burkina Faso to improve response to HIV].

In 1998, researchers in Burkina Faso enrolled 300 women more or less involved in commercial sex work in an open cohort to determine whether adequate management of their sexually transmitted infections and exposure to well-designed, well-delivered, and plentiful communication for behaviour change (CBC) might reduce their vulnerability to HIV. In 2000, they observed that the non-professional sex workers (occasional or clandestine sex workers) were more difficult to reach, to mobilize and to keep involved in the project's different activities. This group was also infected at the same or higher ra

The acceptability of the female condom: perspectives of family planning providers in New York City, South Africa, and Nigeria.

This article seeks to fill the gap in female condom acceptability research by examining family planning (FP) providers' attitudes and experiences regarding the female condom in three countries (South Africa, the US, and Nigeria) to highlight providers' potential integral role in the introduction of the female condom. The case studies used data drawn from three independent projects, each of which was designed to study or to change FP providers' attitudes and practices in relation to the female condom. The case study for New York City used data from semistructured interviews with providers in on
