Use of underwater contactless ultrasonography to elucidate the internal anatomy and reproductive activity of manta and devil rays (family: Mobulidae).

The ability to visualise the internal anatomical structures of fish provides important information on their reproductive status and body condition and has made important contributions to many areas of fish biology. Obtaining information on the internal anatomy of fish has traditionally required euthanasia and dissection. Although ultrasonography is now increasingly used to study internal fish anatomy without the need for euthanasia, traditional techniques still require restraint and contact with the animal, both of which are known to cause stress. This has prompted the development of waterproo

The combined cartilage growth - calcification patterns in the wing-fins of Rajidae (Chondrichthyes): A divergent model from endochondral ossification of tetrapods.

The relationship between cartilage growth - mineralization patterns were studied in adult Rajidae with X-ray morphology/morphometry, undecalcified resin-embedded, heat-deproteinated histology and scanning electron microscopy. Morphometry of the wing-fins, nine central rays of the youngest and oldest specimens documented a significant decrement of radials mean length between inner, middle and outer zones, but without a regular progression along the ray. This suggests that single radial length growth is regulated in such a way to align inter-radial joints parallel to the wing metapterygia curvat

Polypocephalus barsami sp. nov., a New Species of Polypocephalidae Meggitt, 1924 (Lecanicephalidea) from the Persian Gulf.

INTRODUCTION: Although many batoid species, known as final hosts of lecanicephalidean cestodes, exist in the Persian Gulf, no knowledge regarding this cestode order is available for this region. This study is the first one focusing on this order in the Persian Gulf. METHODS: A total of 11 cowtail stingrays, Pastinachus sephen (Forsskål), were collected from the north eastern Persian Gulf. Isolated cestodes were fixed in 10% seawater-buffered formalin and stored in 70% ethanol. For morphological examinations, worms were stained using acetic carmine; a subset was prepared for SEM. RESULTS: A n

Local differences in calretinin immunoreactivity in the optic tectum of the ocellated dragonet.

The optic tectum of the ocellated dragonet (Synchiropus ocellatus) was studied with immunohistochemistry. Antibodies raised against the calcium binding protein calretinin (CR) revealed a lamination similar to that already reported for other ray finned fish. Most immunoreactive fibers could be observed in those layers receiving retinal afferents and most immunoreactive cells occur in the stratum periventriculare. However, there are marked differences in the presence of other calretinin-positive cell types and immunoreactive lamina between the dorsomedial and ventrolateral parts of the tectum. S

Histodytes microocellatus gen. et sp. nov. (Dracunculoidea: Guyanemidae), a parasite of Raja microocellata on the European Atlantic coast (north-western Spain).

We describe a new genus, Histodytes, within the family Guyanemidae (Nematoda: Spirurida: Camallanina: Dracunculoidea). The type species, Histodytes microocellatus n. sp., is found in the gill, heart, kidney, spleen and gonad tissues of Raja microocellata from the continental shelf off the estuary of Muros y Noia (north-western Iberian Peninsula). Histodytes differs morphologically from the three other genera described to date in this family ( Guyanema, Travassosnema, Pseudodelphys) because the vulva is situated a long way back from the oesophageal-intestinal union, and the anterior uterine bra

Consolidation improves the learning of new meanings for known words but not necessarily their integration into semantic memory.

Consolidation is essential to the integration of novel words into the mental lexicon; however, its role in learning new meanings for known words remains unclear. This old-form-new-meaning learning is very common, as when one learns that "skate" is also a type of fish in addition to its familiar roller- or ice-skating meaning. To address consolidation effects for new meanings, we compared the behavioral and ERP measures on new and original meanings tested 24 hours after learning with words tested immediately after learning. Semantic judgments of both new and original meanings benefitted from th

Identification and characterization of a novel papillomavirus in thornback skate (Raja clavata).

Papillomaviruses are non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses capable of infecting a wide range of vertebrates, from chondrichthyans to mammals. In this study, we report for the first time the identification and complete genome of a papillomavirus in the thornback skate (Raja clavata), named Raja clavata papillomavirus 1 (RclaPV1). The genomic sequence was determined using a metagenomic approach and subsequently confirmed by PCR. The RclaPV1 genome is 5,539 bp in length and displays the typical organization of papillomaviruses, encoding 4 core proteins on a single DNA strand: two early genes

Patients Allergic to Fish Tolerate Ray Based on the Low Allergenicity of Its Parvalbumin.

BACKGROUND: Clinical reactions to bony fish species are common in patients with allergy to fish and are caused by parvalbumins of the β-lineage. Cartilaginous fish such as rays and sharks contain mainly α-parvalbumins and their allergenicity is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the allergenicity of cartilaginous fish and their α-parvalbumins in individuals allergic to bony fish. METHODS: Sensitization to cod, salmon, and ray among patients allergic to cod, salmon, or both (n = 18) was explored by prick-to-prick testing. Clinical reactivity to ray was assessed in 11 patients by f

A new genus and species of fish blood fluke, Achorovermis testisinuosus gen. et sp. n. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae), infecting critically endangered smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata (Rhinopristiformes: Pristidae) in the Gulf of Mexico.

Achorovermis testisinuosus gen. et sp. n. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) infects the heart of the smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata Latham (Rhinopristiformes: Pristidae), in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Specimens of the new genus, along with the other blood flukes that infect batoids are similar by having an inverse U-shaped intestine and a curving testis as well as by lacking tegumental spines. The new genus differs from all of the other blood flukes infecting batoids by having an elongate body (>50 × longer than wide), a testis having >100 curves, and an ovary wholly anterior to the uterus. The First Report and Description of a New Species of Rhinebothrium from a Dasyatid Stingray from the Brazilian Northeastern Coast with a Review of the Distribution of the Genus throughout Endemic Marine Ecoregions.

Here we describe a new species of RhinebothriumLinton, 1890, from Hypanus guttatus (Bloch and Schneider). Rhinebothrium ramosi n. sp. can be differentiated from all 51 valid species of the genus by having 4-5 testes and uterus that extends throughout the entire length of the proglottid. Only 8 of the above species closely resemble R. ramosi in total length (Rhinebothrium bunburyense, Rhinebothrium chollaense, Rhinebothrium corbatai, Rhinebothrium dasyatidis, Rhinebothrium kruppi, Rhinebothrium lintoni, Rhinebothrium margaritense, and Rhinebothrium reydai). New genus and species of eudactylinid (Siphonostomatoida: Copepoda) from gill lamellae of ornate eagle rays, Aetomylaeus vespertilio (Myliobatidae), collected in the Beagle Gulf off northern Australia.

Janinecaira darkthread n. gen., n. sp. (Eudactylinidae, Siphonostomatoida, Copepoda) infects gills of the ornate eagle ray Aetomylaeus vespertilio (Bleeker, 1852) (Myliobatidae, Myliobatiformes) in the Beagle Gulf (Timor Sea, eastern Indian Ocean) off northern Australia. The adult female of Janinecaira darkthread n. sp. is most easily distinguished from other eudactylinids (Eudactylinidae) by its long genital complex that comprises about 86-90% of the total body length. A diagnostic key to genera of Eudactylinidae based on adult females is provided.

Valuing conservation and natural wealth: The blue economy of manta ray watching in the Maldives.

Amid declining manta ray populations globally, the well-established and growing manta ray tourism industries generate substantial economic benefits and aid protective legislation for these threatened elasmobranchs. As flagship species, manta rays are a drawcard for marine wildlife tourism and a gateway for engaging the public and communities in conservation. Healthy marine ecosystems are the key drivers of employment and economic sustainability for island nations such as the Maldives. However, there are many stakeholders competing for these shared resources, which can result in environmental d

Allometric Brain Development and Neuroecological Adaptations in Juvenile and Adult Raja polystigma.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrichthyans represent some of the earliest diverging lineages of jawed vertebrates, making them key models for studying the evolution of vertebrate brains. Despite their evolutionary significance, Mediterranean species remain understudied. This research focuses on the speckled skate (Raja polystigma), an endemic Mediterranean benthic species with distinct life history traits, such as bathymetric segregation and postnatal shifts in diet. These traits provide a unique opportunity to explore how ecological factors influence postnatal brain development and neuroecological adaptat

Growth and mechanical correlations of calcified cartilage in Batoidea: A histomorphological study using the Raja asterias model.

This study investigates the growth and calcification of the appendicular skeleton in Raja asterias (Delaroche, 1809), a member of the Batoidea, to explore the relationship between histomorphology and the mechanics of batoid locomotion within the water column. Although much prior research has focused on the "tessellated pattern" in these fishes, the variable structure of the appendicular skeleton provides fresh insights into the understudied interplay between skeletal histomorphology and the mechanical functions of Batoidea fins. The shape and initial growth of fin cartilage are influenced by t

The Lecanicephalidea represents one of 11 currently recognized elasmobranch-hosted tapeworm lineages. It is quite speciose, with nearly 100 validly recognized species to date. Yet spermatozoon features have been fully characterized for only a single species; spermatozoon characters for a second species were previously included in a data matrix used to infer phylogenetic relationships among cestode orders, but data are limited and no images were provided. Specimens of Tetragonocephalum sp. were collected from the whipray, Urogymnus asperrimus 1, from the Solomon Sea off the Solomon Islands. The

Optimization of Chondroitin Sulfate Extraction From Skate (Raja spp.) Cartilage Using Response Surface Methodology: Anti-Inflammatory and Chondroprotective Activities.

The enzymatic hydrolysis of skate cartilage utilizing Alcalase and Protamex was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The quadratic model was adequate, confirming its appropriateness for optimization. The optimal parameters for the extraction of total uronic acids were a 0.98% enzyme concentration, 264 min of hydrolysis, and a hydrolysate-to-ethanol ratio of 1:2.14. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed ∆Di-6S as the principal disaccharide. To validate the optimized extract, biological assays were performed in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages and

Hydrodynamically Derived Negative Lift Generation of the Cephalic Lobes of Foraging Benthopelagic Myliobatids to Maintain Ground Contact.

The cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) and spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) are benthopelagic myliobatids that forage on the ocean bottom. To sense prey under the bottom substrate, cownose rays deploy two depressible cephalic lobes, which are anterior modifications of the pectoral fins. Spotted eagle rays have a delta-shaped flattened rostrum from two fused cephalic lobes that is angled down in contact with the substrate when foraging. Geometry and orientation of the cephalic lobes of both rays, when in contact with the bottom, potentially indicate a passive hydrodynamic function. CT scans

The skate spiracular organ develops from a unique neurogenic placode that is distinct from lateral line placodes.

The spiracular organ is an epithelial pouch or tube lined with mechanosensory hair cells that is found embedded in the wall of the spiracle in many non-teleost jawed fishes. It is innervated via a branch of the anterior lateral line nerve and usually considered a specialised lateral line organ, despite its presumed function as a proprioceptor for jaw movement. It is homologous to the paratympanic organ: a hair cell-lined epithelial pouch embedded in the wall of the middle ear of birds, alligators and Sphenodon. A previous study showed that the chicken paratympanic organ and its afferent neuron
