Skiing and snowboarding injuries. When schussing is a pain.

Downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding are growing rapidly in popularity. With the ever-increasing number of participants, physicians must be prepared to deal with the injuries specific to these sports. More important, physicians need to use epidemiologic data to advise patients of methods to minimize the risk of injury as they participate in these healthy and vigorous winter sports.

Promoter hypomethylation of SKI in autoimmune pancreatitis.

The relationship between methylation abnormality and autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP)-a representative IgG4-related disease-has not yet been elucidated. We identified SKI might have a significant methylation abnormality in AIP through methylation array analysis using the Illumina Infinium Human Methylation 450K BeadChip array, and investigated the relationship of SKI with AIP clinicopathological features. The methylation rate of SKI was assessed by quantitative SYBR green methylation-specific PCR, and the degree of SKI expression in tissue specimens was assessed by immunohistochemistry in 10 AIP

Dimple on the shoulder after a ski injury.

CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: A 74-year-old woman was brought to the ski clinic shortly after a fall on her left shoulder while skiing. She did not remember the exact fall mechanism. She felt a popping sensation in her left shoulder and was unable to move her left arm due to severe pain. Her medical and social histories were unremarkable. On physical examination, she had a deformity in her left shoulder (figure 1). Her neurovascular examination was intact.emermed;34/11/740/F1F1F1Figure 1Photograph of the left shoulder on arrival showing an anterior 'dimple'. QUESTION: What is the most likely diagnos

[Performance development in the Engadin ski marathon].

All competitions of the Engadin Ski marathon were analyzed in order to pursue the development of the participants' performances over time. Of special interest was the influence of the recently introduced free skating technique on the finish times. Statistical computations are based on quantiles (x0.1, x0.25, x0.5, x0.75, x0.9). Since the first competition in 1969, there is a continuous increase of performance. The introduction of the fast freestyle-technique didn't lead to a visible improvement of the performances. Probably, other variables like growing importance of leisure-time sport-leading

Epoxy-dermatitis in a ski-stick factory.

In a Finnish ski-stick factory with 293 employees, several persons had skin symptoms compatible with contact allergy. Epoxy resin proved to be the only potential allergen in the working environment. The results of the study point to the important rôle of ski-stick saw dust as the source of sensitizing, partly cured epoxy resin. The study also showed that not only hardeners, but also epoxy resin can cause immediate type of allergy.

Modeling of the human leg in ski injuries.

This study establishes that the human lower extremity-ski system has a fundamental frequency of approximately 1 Hz. The fundamental mode dominates the system response when loading times are short compared to the first natural frequency. Consequently, the use of a single degree of freedom approximation and the use of impulse criteria can provide important insights into the problem of skiing injuries. Specifically, the sport of snow skiing develops forces with frequency content in the static, transition, and impulse regions of the leg-ski response spectrum. Therefore, ski release bindings must b

Occurrence and trends in ski injuries in Norway.

OBJECTIVES: To provide an overview of ski injuries in Norway and to describe the changes between 1990 and 1996. METHODS: All ski injuries (7966) treated at four hospitals providing health care to a defined population of about 11% of the Norwegian population were registered prospectively from 1990 to 1996. For this study, 6462 injuries sustained in cross country skiing, downhill skiing, telemark skiing, and snowboarding were selected for further analysis. RESULTS: The relative distribution of ski injuries by type of skiing changed significantly from 1990 to 1996 (p<0.001). Injuries from snowb

Kinematics of cross-country ski racing.

This study investigated the evolution of skiing velocity, cycle length, and cycle rate in elite and subelite skiers during cross-country ski races. Senior male cross-country skiers engaged respectively in a 30-km skating race (N = 34) or a 50-km classical race (N = 27) were videotaped as they skied two different sections of 30 m, a 7 degrees uphill, and a flat section. In the skating race, most skiers used the offset technique on uphill and the 2-skate on flat, while the preferred techniques during the classical race were the diagonal stride for uphill and double-poling on flat. Results demons

Paediatric injuries on an artificial ski slope.

Skiing on artificial ski slopes is enjoyed by a large number of children, but the rate and types of injuries amongst young skiers is unknown. During a 1 year prospective study the rate of injury was one per 394 h skied. One hundred and twelve children sustained 116 injuries, including 52 fractures. The ratio of upper to lower limb injuries was 4.5 to 1, with the thumb being the most commonly injured site. Although most injuries resulted from simple falls, five of the 12 patients with the most severe injuries (requiring admission), had injured themselves by crashing into the barrier at the bott

Bottom temperatures of skating skis on snow.

Thermocouples provide information about ski and skier performances and snow conditions. V1 skating superimposed a strong, cyclic signal on the general heating due to friction. The power spectra of these cycles gave information about the skier's technique. The greatest temperature response at the base of a skating ski was just behind the foot, where the ski is heavily loaded. The longitudinal profiles showed generally increasing temperatures along the length of the ski. Harder, more durable waxes are needed behind the foot, where most of the weight is carried, but the gliding temperatures are h

Hand injuries on artificial ski slope.

50 consecutive patients with injuries due to skiing on an artificial ski slope were seen in our emergency department over a 16-month period; 76% of these involved the hand or wrist. 52.5% of hand lesions were fractures and only one-third of the first ray injuries were sprains of the ulnar aspect of the MP joint. These data significantly differ from those known for skiing on snow.

[Pulmonary damage caused by ski waxing].

It is well known that inhalation of pyrolysis products of perfluorinated hydrocarbons (e.g. Teflon) may result in polymer-fume fever and even pulmonary oedema. A new type of ski wax has recently been introduced, a powder consisting of low-molecular perfluorinated hydrocarbons. We report a case history of a man who developed an attack of polymer-fume fever and pulmonary oedema after smoking cigarettes contaminated with this ski wax. Inhalation of vapour from ski waxes melted at low temperatures may also be harmful to the lungs.

The effect of swinging the arms on muscle activation and production of leg force during ski skating at different skiing speeds.

The study investigated the effects of arm swing during leg push-off in V2-alternate/G4 skating on neuromuscular activation and force production by the leg muscles. Nine skilled cross-country skiers performed V2-alternate skating without poles at moderate, high, and maximal speeds, both with free (SWING) and restricted arm swing (NOSWING). Maximal speed was 5% greater in SWING (P<0.01), while neuromuscular activation and produced forces did not differ between techniques. At both moderate and high speed the maximal (2% and 5%, respectively) and average (both 5%) vertical force and associated imp

Treadmill roller ski test predicts biathlon roller ski race results of elite U.S. biathlon women.

This study evaluated ski-specific laboratory testing and the relationship of test parameters to biathlon race performance. Since the ski skating technique used exclusively during biathlon racing requires a large upper body contribution, treadmill roller ski test parameters may provide relevant information for ski-specific training and ski performance. Seven top U.S. female biathlon skiers performed lactate threshold and VO2 peak tests running (TR) and roller skiing (skating technique, RS) on a motor driven treadmill. In addition, a constant workload (14 km.h(-1), 6% grade) roller ski test to e

Muscle Activity and Morphology in Slalom Skiing by a Single-Leg Amputee Ski Racer: A Case Study of a Paralympic Athlete.

The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of skiing by a single-leg amputee ski racer from the viewpoints of muscle activity, morphology, and the relationship between both elements through comparisons with those of a non-disabled ski racer. One elite athlete, classified as LW2 (left thigh amputation), and one non-disabled athlete, as a control, participated in this study. The cross-sectional area of thigh muscles was measured through magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, muscle activities and joint and segment kinematics during slalom skiing were measured using electromyogra

Biomechanical determinants of oxygen extraction during cross-country skiing.

To determine the relationship of muscle activation, force production, and cycle characteristics to O(2) extraction during high- and lower-intensity double poling (DP), nine well-trained male cross-country skiers performed DP on a treadmill for 3 min at 90% VO(2peak) followed by 6 min at 70%. During the final minute at each workload, arterial, femoral, and subclavian venous blood were collected for determination of partial pressure of O(2), partial pressure of CO(2), pH, and lactate. Electromyography (EMG) was recorded from six upper and lower body muscles, leg and pole forces were measured, an
