Anti-Aging Potential of Phytoextract Loaded-Pharmaceutical Creams for Human Skin Cell Longetivity.

The exposure to ultraviolet radiations (UVR) is the key source of skin sunburn; it may produce harmful entities, reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to aging. The skin can be treated and protected from the injurious effects of ROS by using various pharmaceutical formulations, such as cream. Cream can be loaded with antioxidants to quench ROS leading to photo-protective effects. Moreover, modern medicines depend on ethnobotanicals for protection or treatment of human diseases. This review article summarizes various in vivo antioxidant studies on herbal creams loaded with phyto-extracts. Thes

Highly sensitive spectrometric method for determination of hydroquinone in skin lightening creams: application in cosmetics.

A highly sensitive, simpler, faster and economical UV/visible spectrophotometric method has been established for the estimation of hydroquinone (HQ) in dilute organic matrices. The method is based on using ammonium meta-vanadate as an oxidizing catalyst for conversion of HQ to p-benzoquinone (BQ) in the presence of oxygen. As a result of higher absorption of UV light by BQ than by HQ, its signal has been utilized for determining HQ at the trace level. The effect of various parameters such as amount of oxidizing agent, stability time, temperature, acids and bases, solvents and interference by v

The effect of aqueous cream BP on the skin barrier in volunteers with a previous history of atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: The emollient aqueous cream BP is frequently used for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD), yet it is associated with a high rate of adverse cutaneous reactions. It contains the harsh anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulphate, a known negative environmental factor associated with the exacerbation of AD. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of aqueous cream BP on stratum corneum (SC) integrity and skin barrier function in volunteers with a predisposition to a defective skin barrier. METHODS: Thirteen volunteers with a previous history of AD (no symptoms for 6 months) applied a

Case studies assessing a new skin barrier repair cream for the treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility, epidermal barrier dysfunction and immune dysregulation. The intense pruritus associated with the disease causes an itch-scratch cycle that worsens symptoms and can cause significant discomfort for the patient. Recently, the focus of the atopic dermatitis treatment paradigm has shifted from targeting inflammation to the use of agents that normalize the skin barrier, which may reduce the current dependence on topical steroids and immunomodulators. A new barrier repair cream (Ep

Urinary mercury levels in females: influence of skin-lightening creams and dental amalgam fillings.

The influence of application of skin-lightening creams and dental amalgam fillings on the urinary mercury (Hg) level was evaluated in 225 females (ages 17 to 58 years) living in Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia. The arithmetic mean of the urinary Hg level was 6.96 +/- 20.43 micrograms 1(-1), in the range 0 to 204.8 micrograms 1(-1). The mean urinary Hg level adjusted by creatinine (Cr) was 11.22 +/- 37.23 micrograms g-1 Cr, in the range 0 to 459.37 micrograms g-1. No significant difference in urinary Hg was noted between the females regarding the use of skin-lightening creams. On the other hand

Efficacy of skin barrier creams (I). The repetitive irritation test (RIT) in the guinea pig.

An animal model for the evaluation of skin protective creams against chemical irritants is described. The irritants were applied daily for 2 weeks to shaved back skin of young guinea pigs: sodium lauryl sulphate (5% aq.; 30 min), sodium hydroxide (0.5% aq.; 2 min), and toluene (20% eth.; 2 min). The barrier cream was applied 2 h prior to and immediately after exposure to the irritant. Control animals were treated with the irritant only. The irritant reaction was scored on a 4-point scale for erythema and quantified with regard to transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by evaporimetry and skin blood

Histological assessment of skin damage by irritants: its possible use in the evaluation of a 'barrier cream'.

The histological changes induced by topical application of selected irritants are reported. The possible application of this methodology to the evaluation of the protective value of a silicone-containing barrier cream is discussed. Although this crude method only allows objectivity of the later stages of a toxic reaction, it gives useful information about the potential protective effect of a silicone-containing barrier cream.

Health and Regulatory Assessment of Hydroquinone, Mercury and Steroids in Skin-Lightening Creams Marketed in Pakistan.

People from all over the world use cosmetics to enhance their physical appearance, seeking social acceptance. Most locally produced skin-lightening creams used in developing countries are a mixture of fat and water applied to the skin surface. These Skin Lightening creams may pose a potential health risk due to their inclusion of various highly toxic active ingredients like hydroquinone, mercury, and steroids. This study quantifies the levels of these toxic substances in ten commonly used SLC brands in Pakistan and their associated health risks in samples marketed in Lahore. To determine the c

Clinical Observation of a Novel Moisturizing Cream for Reducing Neurovascular Hyper-Reactivity in Sensitive Skin.

BACKGROUND: Sensitive skin is a syndrome characterized by unpleasant sensations in response to external stimuli. Its pathogenesis is linked to impaired skin barrier function, leading to neurovascular hyper-reactivity and inflammation. While topical functional skincare products are known to repair sensitive skin, there are limited reports on products specifically targeting the reduction of neurovascular hyper-reactivity. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel cream in improving neurovascular hyper-reactivity and subjective symptoms in sensitive skin. METHODS: This randomize

The effect of 4 barrier creams on the absorption of water, benzene, and formaldehyde into excised human skin.

The effect of 4 barrier creams on the absorption of (3H)-water (14C)-benzene and (14C)-formaldehyde into excised human skin was studied. The control skin and the barrier cream treated skin were exposed to the test substance for 0.5 hr, whereupon the amount absorbed was determined. The results indicated that the experimental cream "Water barrier" reduced the absorption of water and benzene but not formaldehyde. Kerodex 71 cream slightly reduced the absorption of benzene and formaldehyde. The barrier creams Petrogard and "Solvent barrier" did not affect the absorption of any of the substances st

Evaluation of the atrophogenic potential of hydrocortisone 1% cream and pimecrolimus 1% cream in uninvolved forehead skin of patients with atopic dermatitis using optical coherence tomography.

Topical corticosteroids are widely used to treat atopic dermatitis (AD), but their anti-inflammatory mode of action can be accompanied by several unwanted side effects including skin atrophy and telangiectasia. In this 8-week, investigator-blinded, intraindividual right-left comparison study with patients with mild-to-moderate AD, hydrocortisone 1% cream (HCT) was applied twice daily for 4 weeks on one side of forehead skin without clinical signs of AD and pimecrolimus 1% cream (PIM) on the other. Evaluation of in vitro Skin Permeation of Clascoterone From Clascoterone Topical Cream, 1% (w/w).

Winlevi® (clascoterone) topical cream (1%, w/w) was approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older. The active ingredient, clascoterone, is not stable in physiological solutions and can hydrolyze to cortexolone at body temperature. Instability of clascoterone poses a significant challenge in accurately assessing the rate and extent of clascoterone permeation in vitro. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop an in vitro skin permeation test (IVPT) method, and a robust analytical method, that can minimize hydrolyzation of clascoteron
