BACKGROUND: The morbidity associated with skin diseases makes them an important public health problem. Very scanty literature is found on the problem which is either disease-based, community based or a specified population group-based. Objective of this study was to assess the pattern of skin diseases in patients and to determine their relation with demographic characteristics.
METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted at Dermatology Out-patient Department of Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro, Pakistan for the period from 10th January to 10th February 2008. Four hundred and eleven pat

The Korean list of occupational skin diseases was amended in July 2013. The past list was constructed according to the causative agent and the target organ, and the items of that list had not been reviewed for a long period. The revised list was reconstructed to include diseases classified by the International Classification of Diseases (10th version). Therefore, the items of compensable occupational skin diseases in the amended list in Korea comprise contact dermatitis; chemical burns; Stevens-Johnson syndrome; tar-related skin diseases; infectious skin diseases; skin injury-induced celluliti

BACKGROUND: Infectious disease outbreak is one of the most concerning issues in the aftermath of floods. However, knowledge gaps exist in the risk, burden, and trend of infectious disease hospitalisation associated with floods. Therefore, we aimed to quantify the risks, burden, and temporal changes of infectious disease hospitalisations associated with flood exposure during 2000-19.
METHODS: In this multicountry, time-series study, hospitalisation data for all communities in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, and Thailand from Jan 1, 2000, to Dec 31, 2019, were collected from loca

During complete inspection of skin a variety of penile skin alterations may be found. Not all dermatological findings have clinical relevance. Pearly papules and heterotopic sebaceous glands are physiological variations. Most penile melanotic macules, angiokeratoma, fibroma and angioma have not to be treated. However, other more severe diseases such as malignant skin lesions (erythroplasia of Queyrat), infectious disease (human papillomavirus-induced penile warts) or systemic skin diseases (psoriasis) may be detected. Since patients are alarmed by genital skin lesions and their sexuality may b

Acute bacterial skin and soft tissue infections represent a common clinical problem, and accurate diagnosis is crucial for initiating appropriate therapy. However, conditions such as cellulitis and erysipelas can be clinically mimicked by a variety of non-infectious conditions, including eczematous, venous, lymphatic, and autoimmune diseases. This review summarizes the key differences in clinical presentation, patient history, and laboratory findings that help distinguish true infections from their non-infectious mimickers. Special attention is given to conditions such as microbial eczema, her

Few skin diseases specifically or exclusively affect older horses and donkeys. Hypertrichosis (hirsutism) associated with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction is probably the most recognized and best understood exception and is the most common age-related skin condition in equids. Many other conditions are known to be more serious in older horses. Horses affected with immune-compromising conditions can be more severely affected by infectious diseases of the skin or heavy and pathologically significant parasitism. Neoplasia of the skin is probably more prevalent and worse in older horses, alth

BACKGROUND: More than 90% of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients will develop at least one type of skin disorder during the course of the disease. The prevalence and severity of skin disease commonly seen in HIV-infected patients has decreased in the era of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Few studies in Ethiopia have shown the magnitude of skin problems among adult patients on cART. The aim of this study is to describe the pattern of skin disease among adult patients who are on cART.
METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study at ALERT Hospital from April 2018 to

Abstract Skin is subject to frequent friction injury. Friction affects different structures of the skin, including keratinocytes, melanocytes, fibroblasts, and follicular units. Friction can also stimulate cytokine production. Friction is sensed by the mechanoreceptors, resulting in signal transduction to the nucleus, activating transcription factors and mechanoresponsive genes. Numerous friction-aggravated diseases have been identified, including inflammatory, depositional, follicular, genetic, infectious, and vesiculobullous disorders. Friction, as a potential modifiable aggravator, should b

Skin is larger than any other organ in humans. Like other organs, various bacterial, viral, and inflammatory diseases, as well as cancer, affect the skin. Skin diseases like acne, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis often reduce the quality of life seriously. Therefore, effective treatment of skin disorders is important despite them not being life-threatening. Conventional medicines for skin diseases include corticosteroids and antimicrobial drugs, which are effective in treating many inflammatory and infectious skin diseases; however, there are growing concerns about the side effects of these th

Children with disabilities may be particularly susceptible to skin disorders, therefore the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of skin disease among such children in Mansoura, Egypt. A total of 636 students with disabilities (76 blind, 446 deaf-mute and 114 mentally retarded) and 720 sex and age matched students (control) who did not have these disabilities were given a thorough dermatological examination. We found 89.5% of blind students, 99.3% of deaf students and 100% of mentally retarded students had 1 or more skin diseases (both infectious and non-infectious) in comparison t

Background The skin is the largest organ of the body with many different functions. All age groups are affected by skin diseases, which are widespread in underdeveloped nations. From a straightforward vesicular non-neoplastic lesion to a catastrophic neoplastic lesion, skin disorders exhibit a wide variety of geographic patterns. To make an accurate diagnosis, identify etiological agents, and assist a dermatologist or clinician in selecting the best course of treatment, a skin biopsy must undergo histopathological analysis. The present study was conducted to investigate the histological diagno

BACKGROUND: HIV positive patients can suffer many complications due to infectious diseases. A sever drug reaction to some of the drugs involved in the treatment can overlap the symptoms of the infections, making the diagnosis very difficult. We present the case of a 28-year-old-man, HIV positive, with secondary syphilis, who developed a Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) caused by one of the many drugs he received. The SJS was overlapped with a possible Jarisch Herxheimer Reaction, which complicated the diagnosis of the skin reaction.
OBJECTIVE: In HIV+ patients, the overlapping of severe drug re

Atopic dermatitis is a common chronic pruritic inflammatory skin disorder, characterized by an abnormal skin barrier, immune dysfunction, and an altered skin microbiome. Atopic dermatitis may be seen in conjunction with a variety of other skin disorders due to the complex pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, involving genetic and environmental factors that are associated with immune dysfunction, barrier defects, and altered skin microbiomes. Skin disorders associated with atopic dermatitis include diseases sharing similar genetic origins like ichthyosis vulgaris, infectious diseases such as impe

Internationally adopted children often present diseases contracted in the country of origin. Skin diseases are common in new arrivals, and diagnosis may prove challenging for GPs or even dermatologists if they are inexperienced in the extensive geographic and ethnic diversity of international adoptees. To analyse the frequency and characteristics of skin diseases in international adoptees. In total, 142 adoptees were evaluated for a cross-sectional cohort study. The most frequent diseases observed at arrival were dermatological conditions. Of the adoptees, 70% presented at least one skin disea

Primary care physicians will likely see a wide variety of occupational skin diseases in their practices, including allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, a variety of infectious diseases, and skin cancers. The ideal role of a medical practitioner involved in occupational dermatology is not only to diagnose and treat patients, but also to determine the cause of the occupational skin disease and to make recommendations for its prevention. Making the diagnosis and offering treatment, determining the cause, and recommending measures can be difficult undertakin
