BACKGROUND: Interventions to resolve thermal discomfort as a common complaint in amputees are usually chosen based on the residual limb skin temperature while wearing prosthesis; whereas, less attention has been paid to residual limb skin temperature while outside of the prosthesis. The objective of this study was to explore the localized and regional skin temperature over the transtibial residual limb (TRL) while outside of the prosthesis.
METHODOLOGY: Eight unilateral transtibial adults with traumatic amputation were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Participants sat to remove their p

UV-radiation is a major risk factor for non-melanoma skin cancer causing specific mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor gene and other genetic aberrations. We here propose that elevated temperature, as found in sunburn areas, may contribute to skin carcinogenesis as well. Continuous exposure of immortal human HaCaT skin keratinocytes (possessing UV-type p53 mutations) to 40 degrees C reproducibly resulted in tumorigenic conversion and tumorigenicity was stably maintained after recultivation of the tumors. Growth at 40 degrees C was correlated with the appearance of PARP, an enzyme activated by

BACKGROUND: Skin temperature changes during mood episodes and can be continuously monitored through wearable devices, potentially serving as a digital biomarker. We aimed to describe differences in skin temperature among bipolar disorder affective episodes and after symptomatic remission.
METHODS: We collected skin temperature through E4 wearable devices from a sample of 104 bipolar disorder patients in depressive, manic, or euthymic states, and 35 healthy controls. Participants in manic and depressive states were monitored for 48 h during acute episodes and after clinical remission, while eu

Objective.Exertional heat illness (EHI) remains a challenge for those that exercise in hot and humid environments. Physiological status monitoring is an attractive method for assessing EHI risk and a critical component of recommended layered risk management approaches. While there is consensus that some combination of core body temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate, and hydration provide an indication of heat strain, a field-feasible metric that correlates to EHI incidence has not been identified.Approach.We present a comparison of five practicable heat strain indices (skin temperatur

Venous ulcers affect approximately 2.5 million adults with chronic venous disease (CVD). Venous ulcers are a significant health problem with a reoccurrence rate as high as 72%. There is a critical need for a prediction/prevention model of venous ulcers that includes objective methods to assess the skin. Among individuals affected by CVD, skin temperature is elevated in the lower extremities. This case study of a patient with CVD highlights the potential predictive usefulness and feasibility of measuring skin temperature with an infrared dermal thermometer as part of the standard of care for ve

Tail-flick (TF) response latencies were measured in pentobarbitone-anaesthetized rats and variations with time, body and tail temperatures and 5 tail stimuli positions analysed with a mixed model analysis of variance. Variation with time was not significant. Highly significant differences (P < 0.001) were found between tail-flick latencies (TFLs) for tail temperatures and stimulus position. The most proximal tail position showed significantly different relationships for TFL with time and body temperature from other positions. The method described allows multiple TFLs to be measured in 1 animal

Bicyclic monoterpene diols (BMTd) stimulate nitric oxide synthesis in melanoma and neuronal cells, representing cell types arising from embryonic neural crest tissue. This study shows that an equimolar mixture of the BMTd's 2,3-cis/exo-pinanediol and 2,3-cis/exo-camphanediol stimulates nitric oxide synthesis in epithelial cells of the skin, specifically normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK) and normal human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC). A 1 mM mixture increased nitric oxide 3-fold in HMVEC in the first 24 h after treatment, and a 2 mM mixture produced an equivalent increase in

Continuous recordings of core body temperature (CBT) are a well-established approach in describing circadian rhythms. Given the discomfort of invasive CBT measurement techniques, the use of skin temperature recordings has been proposed as a surrogate. More recently, we proposed a heat-flux approach (the so-called Double Sensor) for monitoring CBT. Studies investigating the reliability of the heat-flux approach over a 24-hour period, as well as comparisons with skin temperature recordings, are however lacking. The first aim of the study was therefore to compare rectal, skin, and heat-flux tempe

Reactions between skin oil and ozone are a substantial source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the human body, yet factors influencing these reactions and emissions have only recently begun to be investigated. In this study, we conducted single-person chamber experiments involving three volunteers to systematically assess the influence of various factors, including temperature, relative humidity (RH), personal hygiene (bathing frequency and clothing soiling), and clothing coverage. We found that chamber air temperature and RH, within the range of 22-31 °C and 40-70% respective

The purpose of this study was to determine, in ten healthy subjects, the extent of soleus motoneuronal excitability during conditions of increased (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation [TENS]), decreased (Xylocaine [lidocaine]a anaesthesia) and normal (placebo anaesthesia) cutaneous inputs. Increased cutaneous activity was evoked using a TENS unit, with the two pairs of electrodes placed respectively over the Achilles (S2 dermatome) and tibialis anterior (L5 dermatome) tendons. Experimental and placebo topical anaesthesia were obtained after rubbing Xylocaine (5%) and Vaselineb ointment

Skin temperature is fundamental in characterising human thermoregulatory responses. Wired probes, although accurate, restrict movement and are impractical outside laboratory settings. The iButton (DS1922L; Maxim Integrated, USA) is a widely used wireless alternative but does not meet the precision recommended by ISO 9886 and permits only retrospective data retrieval. A recently developed wireless sensor, the eTemp Performance (BodyCAP, France), claims to address these limitations but has not been validated independently. Here, we compared the eTemp and iButton against a wired thermocouple refe

BACKGROUND: The continuous monitoring of body surface temperature has been proven to help detect potential fever events in hospitalized patients. However, the efficacy of using body surface temperature to detect fever in older adults remains unclear due to the relatively low and slower-to-change body surface temperature in this population.
PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate 1) the relationship between changes in body surface and routine tympanic temperatures, 2) the correlation between body surface temperature measurement frequency and detection of fever, and 3) the factors relat

Body temperature homeostasis is accurately regulated by complex feedback-driven neuronal mechanisms, which involve a multitude of thermoregulatory pathways. Thus, core temperature is constantly maintained within a narrow range. As one of the most effective regulatory systems skin temperature is dependent on skin blood flow. Skin blood flow in turn is highly dependent on sympathetic activity. Regional anaesthesia leads to blockade not only of somatosensory and motor nerve fibres but also of sympathetic fibres. As a consequence, vasoconstrictor tonic activity is abrogated and a vasodilation lead

OBJECTIVE: Measurement of skin temperature using infrared thermography has become popular in sports, and has been proposed as an indicator of exercise-induced muscle damage after exercise. However, the relationship between skin temperature and exercise-induced muscle damage is still unclear. Here we set out to investigate the relationship between skin temperature and exercise-induced muscle damage.
APPROACH: Twenty untrained participants completed a protocol of exercise for calf muscles. Before and after exercise blood samples were collected to determine creatine kinase and acetylcholinestera

UNLABELLED: Grafted skin impairs heat dissipation, but it is unknown to what extent this affects body temperature during exercise in the heat.
PURPOSE: We examined core body temperature responses during exercise in the heat in a group of individuals with a large range of grafts covering their body surface area (BSA; 0%-75%).
METHODS: Forty-three individuals (19 females) were stratified into groups based on BSA grafted: control (0% grafted, n = 9), 17%-40% (n = 19), and >40% (n = 15). Subjects exercised at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production (339 ± 70 W; 4.3 ± 0.8 W·kg) in an environmen

BACKGROUND: Skin temperature assessment is a promising modality for early detection of diabetic foot problems, but its diagnostic value has not been studied. Our aims were to investigate the diagnostic value of different cutoff skin temperature values for detecting diabetes-related foot complications such as ulceration, infection, and Charcot foot and to determine urgency of treatment in case of diagnosed infection or a red-hot swollen foot.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The plantar foot surfaces of 54 patients with diabetes visiting the outpatient foot clinic were imaged with an infrared camera. Ni
