Recurrent inverted papilloma coexisted with skull base lymphoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma is an uncommon neoplasm in the nasal cavity. It is a histologically benign tumor, but has a high recurrence and local invasion rate. In addition, nasal or skull base lymphoma is another rare neoplasm. The coexistence of these two tumors in one case makes the diagnosis and related treatment difficult. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of an immunocompetent patient, who had a history of inverted papilloma 20 years ago. The patient presented with an infiltrated mass lesion in the nasal cavity with extension to the frontal base. The repeated biopsies revealed inverted

Chondroblastoma-like chondroma of soft tissue: report of the first case in the base of skull.

Chondroblastoma-like chondroma (CLC) of soft tissue is a rare benign neoplasm that usually involves the soft tissues of the hand. This report describes the first case of CLC of soft tissue arising in the base of the skull. A 33-year-old man was seen with a slow growing mass in the right parotid region of his face. The noncontrast computed tomographic scans showed an 8.5-cm mass with calcifications involving the right masticator space and extending through the bone into the middle cranial fossa. The radiologic differential diagnosis included osteosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and gia

Primary intracranial myxoma of the lateral skull base: a rare entity in clinical practice.

Myxomas are rare benign tumors arising from mesenchymal tissues throughout the body. These tumors are usually seen in the atrium of the heart and the jawbone. Involvement of the skull base with intracranial extension is extremely rare, and only a few cases of primary intracranial myxomas have been described in the literature. A rare case of primary myxoma of the temporal bone is presented in this article. The patient underwent a skull base surgery with a pre-diagnosis of possible chondrosarcoma. The tumor pathology revealed a diagnosis of myxoma with bone and meningeal involvement. Despite the

Skull Metastasis of Gastric Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor Successfully Managed by Surgery.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare, but are the most common mesenchymal neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. The most common sites of metastasis are liver and peritoneum, while bone metastasis is rare. We report on a patient with skull metastasis after seven years of treatment with imatinib for metastatic GIST. She underwent metastasectomy consisting of craniectomy with excision of the mass, and cranioplasty and continued treatment with imatinib and sunitinib, without evidence of cranial recurrence. She died of pneumonia sepsis one year after metastasectomy. Skull metastasis o

Multiple myeloma with oral manifestations as maxillary ulceroproliferative lesion: A case report.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the most common malignant neoplasm of bone and can manifest with different clinical features in oral cavity. MM lesions in skull and jaws have characteristic punched out lesions but are often confused with meningioma when they occur in skull as solitary lesions. We report a case of MM that reported in oral cavity for which prompt diagnosis was done, but there were symptoms that persisted for years and a skull lesion that was diagnosed and treated as meningioma before MM was diagnosed from the oral lesions. This is the first case where the patient has been actually trea

Delayed presentation of bamboo foreign body in brainstem, with novel skull base foramen.

We describe the extremely unusual case of a childhood injury to the skull base presenting after many years, as a foreign body with chronic granulomatous infection of the brainstem, mimicking neoplasm. TB had an inconsequential penetrating injury to the left cheek, from a bamboo spike aged 15. After 4 years, he developed worsening left sided weakness, imaging at this time was normal. After a car accident aged 40, the weakness worsened further and imaging demonstrated a foreign body entering the skull base. At its tip, it had caused a chronic granulomatous reaction within the brainstem. Surgical

Temporomandibular joint, skull base and mandibular ramus functional reconstruction with homologous bank tissue and free flap: a case report with 30 months follow-up.

Big craniofacial resections for highly invasive malignant neoplasm, including skull base and maxillary bones, always represent a difficult chance for the reconstructive surgeon. In these cases it is not easy to restore anatomy and function simultaneously even adopting complex microsurgical techniques. In maxillofacial and oral surgery, simple bone homotransplantation for small bone segments reconstruction has been developing as popular technique and tissue banks offer not only bone segments but also many different tissues including complex body parts. In this paper we present, a case report of

Frontotemporal orbitozygomatico-alar approachfor skull surgery.

Mobilisation of the zygoma has been reported to offer excellent exposure of the cranial base with minimal brain retraction. This study describes our operative technique and presents our experiences of 22 patients. Fifteen patients had a skull base neoplasm and 7 had a complex cerebral aneurysm. To facilitate access to these lesions, two separate bone flaps were created: (1) A free frontotemporal bone flap; and (2) en bloc removal of the superior and lateral orbital rims with the attached zygomatic arch. Because the latter bone flap includes both the orbital roof and the posterolateral wall of

Factors affecting survival of patients with tumors of the anterior skull base.

Fifty-four patients with primary neoplasms of the anterior skull base were treated by craniofacial resection with curative intent. The most common tumor was esthesioneuroblastoma (24), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (10). The overall 2-year and 5-year survivals were 75% and 49%, respectively. High-grade tumors, grades 3 and 4, had a poorer prognosis. Tumor size, dural involvement, sphenoid sinus involvement, age, and sex had no significant influence on survival when examined by multivariate survival analysis. Sixteen complications were noted in the postoperative period. Cerebrospinal flui

Incidental Detection of Plasma Cell Neoplasm on 18F-Choline PET/CT Imaging.

F-Fluorocholine is a relatively new, extremely versatile radiotracer for detecting proliferative or mitogenic activity. Its diagnostic potential has been explored in cancers of the prostate, liver, esophagus, breast, brain, and lung, as well as lymphoma, sarcoma, melanoma, and parathyroid adenomas. The authors present a case where fluorocholine PET/CT performed for characterizing a space-occupying lesion in the brain revealed intensely tracer-avid skull lesions with intracranial soft tissue component and multiple other skeletal lesions. Metastatic disease of the brain: extra-axial metastases (skull, dura, leptomeningeal) and tumour spread.

Extra-axial intracranial metastases may arise through several situations. Hematogenous spread to the meninges is the most frequent cause. Direct extension from contiguous extra-cranial neoplasms, secondary invasion of the meninges by calvarium and skull base metastases, and migration along perineural or perivascular structures are less common. Leptomeningeal invasion gives rise to tumour cell dissemination by the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), eventually leading to neoplastic coating of brain surfaces. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is complementary to CSF examinations and can b

Molecular genetics of paragangliomas of the skull base and head and neck region: implications for medical and surgical management.

Paragangliomas are rare, slow-growing tumors that frequently arise in the head and neck, with the carotid bodies and temporal bone of the skull base being the most common sites. These neoplasms are histologically similar to pheochromocytomas that form in the adrenal medulla and are divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic subtypes based on functionality. Skull base and head and neck region paragangliomas (SHN-PGs) are almost always derived from parasympathetic tissue and rarely secrete catecholamines. However, they can cause significant morbidity by mass effect on various cranial nerves an

Giant cell tumour and central giant cell reparative granuloma of the skull: do these represent ends of a spectrum? A case report and literature review.

Giant cell tumour (GCT) of bone is an uncommon primary bone neoplasm typically occurring at the epiphyses of long bones in young adults. They are osteolytic neoplasms with approximate local recurrence rates of 25%, and 2% of patients develop pulmonary metastases. These tumours appear very rarely in the skull, with those few reported cases arising predominantly in the sphenoid and occasionally the temporal bones. They demonstrate benign histological features, but are locally aggressive and surgical excision is the treatment of choice. It is widely believed that giant cell tumours should be dist

Rare Presentation of Giant Cell Tumor in the Internal Auditory Canal: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign but locally aggressive bone tumor that usually involves the end of long bones. It is a relatively common neoplasm in patients, constituting 5 to 10% of all benign bone tumors. Approximately 2% of GCTs occur in the craniofacial skeleton with a predilection for the ethmoid, sphenoid, and temporal bones. The skull base location is unique and not commonly described. Hearing loss, headache, tinnitus, and subcutaneous masses are the most commonly reported symptoms in GCTs of the skull base. In this case report we present the first description of a GCT within the in

Transpalatal endoscopic endonasal resection of a giant epignathus skull base teratoma in a newborn. Case report.

Teratomas are neoplasms composed of tissues from all three germ layers with varying degrees of differentiation. They are most commonly found in the sacrococcygeal and gonadal regions and rarely occur in the head and neck region. A teratoma is termed "epignathus" when it arises from the skull base or hard palate and is located in the oral cavity. The authors describe a case of a giant epignathus teratoma originating in the skull base of a neonate, extending bilaterally via two pedicles throughout the hard palate and protruding through the oral cavity. The tumor was completely resected using a t
