Everything that happens during wakefulness impacts sleep, and vice versa. Human behavior responds to the environment. With the advent of industrialization, various harmful systems have emerged that affect sleep quality, including artificial light, electronic devices, noise, inadequate eating habits, rotating work shifts, stress, sedentary behavior, multitasking, and information overload. Paradoxically, we owe some advances in sleep medicine to the use of electrical energy and digitization. This article analyzes these topics and addresses sleep in societies currently considered preindustrialize

Sleep disturbance can negatively affect physical and psychological health. Hypnotherapy may be effective for improving sleep with fewer side effects than other treatments. The purpose of this systematic review is to comprehensively identify studies and evidence regarding hypnotherapy for sleep disturbances. Four databases were searched to identify studies examining the use of hypnotherapy for sleep in adult populations. The search yielded 416 articles, of which 44 were included. Qualitative data analysis revealed that 47.7% of the studies showed positive results regarding the impact of hypnoth

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a common cause of infertility. Understanding predictors and outcomes of OSA in women with infertility may guide treatment.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was performed to assess OSA in women presenting to an infertility clinic using validated sleep questionnaires to assess sleep and fertility outcomes. An Infertile-C group (controls with male or tubal factors) and an Infertile-S group (unknown/other infertile causes) were analyzed to assess OSA risk and other sleep disorders (e.g., res

Sleep became a subject of scientific research in the second half of the 19th century. Since sleep, unlike other physiological functions, cannot be attributed to a specific organ, there was no distinct method available to study sleep until then. With the development of physiology and psychology, and a rapidly increasing knowledge of the structure and functioning of the nervous system, certain aspects of sleep became accessible to objective study. A first step was to measure responsiveness to external stimuli systematically, during sleep, allowing a first representation of the course of sleep (S

Sufficient and refreshing sleep is important for good health, physical and cognitive functioning as well as quality of life. An assessment of sleep quality and sleep disorders is therefore mandatory in geriatric patients. Despite a variety of clinical assessment tools for screening and diagnosing sleep disorders, only some of them have been validated in older subjects and nearly none in geriatric patients or in individuals with dementia. Therefore, the aim of this review is to present a concise overview of assessment tools for sleep disorders that are widely used in sleep medicine and to brief

The Dutch College of General Practitioners' (NHG) guideline 'Sleep problems and sleeping pills' provides recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of the most prevalent sleep problems and for the management of chronic users of sleeping pills. The preferred approach for sleeplessness is not to prescribe medication but to give information and behavioural advice. Practice assistants of the Dutch Association of Mental Health and Addiction Care are also expected to be able to undertake this management. The GP may consider prescribing sleeping pills for a short period only in cases of severe i

OBJECTIVE: The evolution of sleep-disordered breathing and sleeping patterns in a group of high-risk infants was studied throughout the first year of life.
METHODOLOGY: Eleven infants with documented sleep apnoea underwent overnight polysomnographic studies at monthly intervals to 6 months, then at 9 and 12 months of age.
RESULTS: All infants had central apnoea and obstructive events recorded on their initial sleep studies. The sleep-disordered breathing in these infants was associated with disturbed sleeping patterns. The amount of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep recorded in each study was i

Wakefulness and sleep are antagonistic states competing for the domain of brain activity. Non-REM sleep and REM sleep are different states of being, sustained by activity in brainstem nuclei, hypothalamus, basal forebrain, and thalamus. Such complex phenomenology is subject to many alterations grouped in the new International Classification of Sleep Disorders. The insomnias are the result of interacting psychosocial, psychophysiologic, neurodevelopmental, and medical factors. Proper perspective of each factor provides the clinical strategies to approach medically the symptom-complex of insomni

PURPOSE: Poor sleep health, a composite measure of key sleep characteristics, may relate to increased depressive symptoms among individuals treated for obstructive sleep apnea. The current investigation examined the association between sleep health and depressive symptomatology.
METHODS: In a pilot sample of 13 symptomatic OSA military Veterans with adequate CPAP adherence (mean age = 54.8, 76.9% male, 100% White), empirically validated cutoffs were applied to actigraphy-derived sleep variables: duration, efficiency, timing, and regularity.
RESULTS: Participants with zero optimal sleep score

Sleep changes throughout the lifespan, with particularly salient alterations occurring during the first few years of life, as well as during the transition from childhood to adolescence. Such changes are partly the result of brain maturation; complex changes in the organisation of the circadian system; as well as changes in daily routine, environmental demands and responsibilities. Despite the automaticity of sleep, given that it is governed by a host of complex mechanisms, there are times when sleep becomes disturbed. Sleep disturbances in childhood are common and may stem from behavioural di

BACKGROUND: Anesthetics, analgesics, and surgery may profoundly affect sleep architecture and aggravate sleep-related breathing disturbances. The authors hypothesized that patients with preoperative polysomnographic evidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) would experience greater changes in these parameters than patients without OSA.
METHODS: After obtaining approvals from the Institutional Review Boards, consented patients underwent portable polysomnography preoperatively and on postoperative nights (N) 1, 3, 5, and 7 at home or in hospital. The primary and secondary outcome measurements w

Although 2 or more sleep onset rapid eye movement (REM) periods (2omSOREMPs) on a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) raise the possibility of narcolepsy, patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) also can have 2omSOREMPs, which may then cause diagnostic uncertainty. To explore what features among OSA patients predict 2omSOREMPs on an MSLT that follows nocturnal polysomnography, we reviewed data from 1,145 consecutively studied patients suspected or confirmed to have OSA rather than narcolepsy. Overall, 4.7% of the subjects had 2omSOREMPs. Variables that were independently predictive of 2omSO

In the period preceding sleep, humans and other animals display a stereotyped repertoire of behaviors-including hygiene-related activities and preparing a place to sleep. Evidence suggests that this pre-sleep phase actively contributes to sleep initiation and quality. Nonetheless, individuals can sometimes fall asleep without preparation, even under undesirable circumstances. These abrupt transitions into sleep can have severe consequences, particularly in high-risk environments. Although progress has been made in identifying neuronal populations controlling sleep-wake states and mechanisms re

Sleep disorders are common in people with Parkinson's disease. These disorders, which increase in frequency throughout the course of the neurodegenerative disease and impair quality of life, include insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, circadian disorders, obstructive sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder. The causes of these sleep disorders are complex and multifactorial, including the degeneration of the neural structures that modulate sleep, the detrimental effect of some medications on sleep, the parkinsonian symptoms that interfere

Because of the rapid increase in the volume and costs of polysomnography and other sleep medicine diagnostic services, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently commissioned the Office of Inspector General (OIG) to review claims submitted for these services. The OIG found numerous cases of inappropriate payment for submitted claims and recommended significant changes in the CMS auditing process for polysomnography claims review. Additionally, a local Medicare Administrative Contractor released the most specific rules and regulations to date regarding billing and payment for s

The study of genetics is providing new and exciting insights into the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Both normal sleep and several types of sleep disturbances have been found to have significant genetic influences, as have traits of normal sleep, such as those evident in EEG patterns and the circadian sleep-wake cycle. The circadian sleep-wake cycle is based on a complex feedback loop of genetic transcription over a 24-h cycle. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) have familial aggregation, and several genes have a strong association with

The number of imported Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) cases in non-endemic countries has increased over the last years. The objective of this analysis is to describe the clinical presentation of HAT in Caucasian travelers. Literature was screened (MEDLINE, Pubmed) using the terms "Human African Trypanosomiasis", "travelers" and "expatriates"; all European languages except Slavic ones were included. Publications without clinical description of patients were only included in the epidemiological analysis. Forty-five reports on Caucasians with T.b. rhodesiense and 15 with T.b. gambiense infec
