Symptoms and signs in 12 patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome have been presented. The most common symptoms were snoring , increased motor activity during sleep and excessive daytime somnolence. The factors predisposing to OSA syndrome were obesity and anatomic abnormalities of the upper airway structure. In some cases the signs of OSA syndrome included hypertension, right heart failure, chronic alveolar hypoventilation and polycythemia. Polysomnography showed sleep fragmentation and the prevalence of light sleep stages. Obstructive sleep apneas repeated 73 +/- 23 times

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a complex disorder characterized by a sleep-related collapse of the upper airway. The most likely candidate for the common pathway linking various abnormalities casually associated with OSAS (such as adenotonsillar hypertrophy, obesity, retro- or micrognathia, acromegaly, or more subtle structural anomalies) is an abnormally small upper airway lumen. Symptoms of OSAS that appear during sleep include snoring, abnormal motor activity, disturbed nocturnal sleep, a sensation of choking, heartburn, nocturia, nocturnal enuresis, and heavy sweating. In selected patients with obstructive sleep apnea, the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty procedure may be performed to remove excessive tissue in the oropharyngeal airway. This may improve the symptoms of sleep apnea as well as snoring. Tracheostomy may be indicated in patients with obstructive sleep apnea with associated severe medical problems.

Central nervous system disorders may cause obstructive sleep apnea, but this sleep-related breathing disorder is rarely associated with a structural abnormality of the medulla. We present a patient with obstructive apnea resulting from autopsy-proven syringobulbia-myelia.

Both muscular hypotonia and anatomic abnormalities have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The upper airways of 25 patients with OSAS were evaluated to determine potential sites of obstruction. Significant airway compromise was found in all patients with some patients having multiple sites of airway narrowing.

Two sons and their father had severe hypersomnolence and obstructive sleep apnea. A third son, although asymptomatic, was shown to have upper-airway obstruction during sleep. Electromyographic recordings of genioglossus activity in the two symptomatic sons revealed loss of tonic activity in early stages of sleep at times when sleep apnea occurred. The asymptomatic son showed loss of tonic activity during rapid-eye-movement sleep, the sleep period when upper-airway obstruction occurred. Two sudden deaths occurred in this family. A 30-year-old brother died at home while asleep, and a child of th

Obesity is a risk factor for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. Excess adipose tissue surrounding the pharynx reduces the upper airway's cross-sectional area and increases the likelihood of airway collapse. Evaluation typically includes a comprehensive physical examination and polysomnography, with additional assessments including drug-induced sleep endoscopy select circumstances. Because obstruction often occurs at multiple airway levels, surgical treatment, including adenotonsillectomy, is associated with lower cure rates in children with obesity. Multidisciplinary management that addresses

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) have a bidirectional relationship. OSA serves as an independent risk factor for stroke, and a prior meta-analysis has demonstrated a 2.24-fold increased risk for stroke development. Conversely, the prevalence of OSA after stroke is remarkably high (50-70%, significantly impairing both functional and survival outcomes). Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is effective in improving neurological symptoms during the acute phase of stroke, although evidence for stroke prevention remains limited. However, OSA is often ove

BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors, is associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is a major contributor to cardiac, cerebrovascular, and metabolic disorders as well as to premature death.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was done for 1 year in 103 patients of MetS diagnosed by the International Diabetes Federation criteria. All patients were subjected to the STOP-Bang questionnaire, and they were classified into low, intermediate, and high risks depending on the score. Patients falling in intermediate-high risk (score

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is very prevalent in sarcoidosis patients. Sarcoidosis of the upper respiratory tract may affect upper airway patency and increase the risk of OSA. Weight gain due to steroid use, upper airway myopathy due to steroids and sarcoidosis itself, and interstitial lung disease with decreased upper airway patency are other reasons for the higher OSA prevalence seen in sarcoidosis. Several clinical manifestations such as fatigue, hypersomnolence, cognitive deficits, and pulmonary hypertension are common to both OSA and sarcoidosis. Therefore, early screening and treatment

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by repeated episodes of upper airway blockage and collapse during sleep accompanied by awakenings with or without oxygen desaturations. During obstructive sleep apnea events, the oropharynx in the back of the throat compresses, causing arousal, oxygen desaturation, or both, leading to fragmented sleep. The hyperplastic uvula is a common clinical finding in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The various diagnostic and treatment modalities of obstructive sleep apnea are discussed in this article.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition characterized by disrupted sleep and excessive daytime fatigue. Associated cognitive and psychomotor decrements pose a threat to aviators' performance and flight safety. Additionally, the longer term health effects associated with the disease can jeopardize an aviator's career and negatively impact operational outputs. This study reviews OSA prevalence, related comorbid conditions in Army aviators, and analyzes the aeromedical dispositions of affected individuals.METHODS: The U.S. Army Aeromedical Electronic Resource Office (AERO) data

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) presents as repetitive interruptions of ventilation >10 seconds during sleep as a result of upper airway obstruction resulting in increased respiratory effort. Intermittent hypoxia causes physiologic changes resulting in increased catecholamine production, increased total peripheral resistance, tachycardia, and increased venous return, leading to increased cardiac output, hypertension, tachyarrhythmias, left ventricular hypertrophy, and heart failure. OSA causes an abnormal dip on 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Definitive diagnosis is made by polyso

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea affects a large number of children and has multiple end-organ sequelae. Although many of these have been demonstrated to be reversible, the effects on some of the organ systems, including the brain, have not shown easy reversibility. Progress in this area has been hampered by lack of a preclinical model to study the disease. Therefore, perioperative and sleep physicians are tasked with making a number of difficult decisions, including optimal surgical timing to prevent disease evolution, but also to keep the perioperative morbidity in a safe range for these pa

Sleep-disordered breathing is one of the most common sleep-associated disorders. At the same time, their prevalence tends to increase with age. One of the most common forms of respiratory failure during sleep is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA), which is characterized by repeated episodes of cessation of breathing or a significant decrease in respiratory flow while maintaining respiratory effort as a result of obstruction of the upper respiratory tract. Drugs have different effects on OSA. There are drugs that worsen OSA, drugs that do not affect OSA, and drugs that improve OSA. Benzodia

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) affects approximately 4% of men and 2% of women in the middle ages but many of these patients are not diagnosed or treated. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality are associated with sleep apnoea. This causal link has been confirmed in recent years on the basis of epidemiological, experimental and therapeutic data. The prevalence in the general population and the impact on the genesis and evolution of systemic and pulmonary arterial hypertension, of cardiac rhythm disorders, of coronary artery disease, of heart failure and of strokes should en

There are several reasons to develop a pharmacologic remedy in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); but so far, there is no generally effective drug available. Previous attempts to find a drug in OSA therapy were serendipity driven in small pilot trials. There is growing literature on phenotyping pathophysiologic mechanisms of OSA that may be exploited in strategic drug development programs. The current review addresses potential pitfalls encountered in previous studies and highlights several drug candidates under development in the field.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in children is defined as a "disorder of breathing during sleep characterized by prolonged partial upper airway obstruction [hypopnea] and/or intermittent complete obstruction (obstructive apnea) that disrupts normal ventilation during sleep and normal sleep patterns." OSAS is both prevalent and underdiagnosed in children. OSAS has harmful central nervous system, cardiovascular, and metabolic consequences, which can include an inability to concentrate in school, poor academic performance, behavioral problems, cardiovascular effects, and poor growth and d

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is present in at least 2% of women and 4% of men, and its prevalence is increasing, because a major predisposing factor for OSA is a high body mass index. Psoriasis has the most strongly substantiated link with OSA, where the relationship may be bidirectional. Dermatologic disorders may be comorbid with OSA due to several factors: (i) the heightened proinflammatory state in OSA, which can occur independent of body mass index, and may exacerbate inflammatory dermatoses; (ii) intermittent hypoxemia may promote neovascularization and tumor growth in certain cancers,
