PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review replicated and highlight novel studies of sleep in children and adults with episodic and chronic migraine.
RECENT FINDINGS: Attack-related sleep symptoms are most common in the prodrome and may represent early activation of the hypothalamus rather than migraine triggers. Interictally, patients with migraine report poor sleep quality and high rates of insomnia symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia in adults and adolescents with chronic migraine and comorbid insomnia results in significant improvement on their headache burden. Thus far, objective studi

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients commonly suffer from nightmares. Still, the prevalence of this issue does not match the little clinical attention it usually receives. Nightmares impact sleep and daily functioning and may play a role in BPD symptomatology, including suicidality. Since BPD has been linked with high rates of suicide, the potential connection with suicidality is crucial to address.
AIMS: To create an up-to-date review of current knowledge on nightmares in BPD and to explore the links between nightmares, insomnia, and suicidality or self-harm in BPD pati

Characterising sleep in young people (aged 15-25 years) with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features is crucial given the association between BPD features and sleep disturbance, negative consequences of poor sleep, and normative developmental sleep changes that occur in this age group. The present study aimed to characterise the sleep profile of young people with BPD to determine whether this profile is non-normative and specific to BPD. Participants were 96 young people (40 with BPD features, 38 healthy individuals, and 18 young people seeking help for mental health difficulties withou

Sleep disorders and nightmares are core symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The relationship seems to be bidirectional, and persistent disturbed sleep may influence the course of the disorder. With regard to sleep quality, insomnia and nocturnal anxiety symptoms, as well as nightmares and stressful dreams, are the most prominent sleep symptoms. Polysomnographic measurements reveal alterations of the sleep architecture and fragmentation of rapid eye movement sleep. In addition, sleep disorders, such as sleep-related breathing disorders and parasomnias are frequent comorbid condit

This review analyzes publications that present data on sleep disorders in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). The analysis is based on domestic and foreign publications that are freely available over the past 30 years. Sleep disorders, the most significant of which are sleep-related respiratory disorders, are one of the factors that cause quality of life decreasing and mortality in patients with neuromuscular diseases. The issues of prevalence of breathing disorders during sleep, relationship of these disorders with clinical and immunological characteristics of disease, demographic indicator

There has been a great development in sleep medicine during the past 20-25 years and the International Classification of Sleep Disorders now lists about 90 relatively well-defined conditions related to sleep. Several of them are severely underdiagnosed. This review considers frequent and/or disabling sleep disorders, in particular disorders for which treatment is available.

The prison environment can be stressful for imprisoned persons. Prison health services primarily offer medication to help individuals cope with stress and other related symptoms, such as restlessness, anxiety or insomnia. Mind-body relaxation techniques can be complementary or an alternative to medication to manage stress or anxiety. We conducted an exploratory study in a post-trial facility using a mixed method approach drawing on the principles of participatory action research to assess the perceived benefits of a mind-body relaxation intervention led by nurses.

OBJECTIVE: Headache and insomnia are both very common and burdensome complaints worldwide. Numerous articles have been written on the relation between them, but the number of scientific articles is limited. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current scientific literature and analyze it in light of the nature of the headache-insomnia relation.
METHODS: An extensive literature search was conducted using the terms, headache, migraine, insomnia, sleep, sleep deprivation, and sleep loss, on the search engines PubMed, ScienceDirect, Medline, and Google Scholar. A total of twelve researc

Nighttime eating is categorized as either night eating syndrome (NES) or the sleep-related eating disorder (SRED). Both diseases are often connected with an increase of the body mass, obesity, and with psychiatric disturbances. NES is characterized by evening hyperphagia, abnormally increased food intake after the evening meal, nocturnal awakings with ingestions, morning anorexia, and insomnia. Patients suffering from NES are aware of their nocturnal ingestions. It is suggested that NES is an abnormality in the circadian rhythm of meal timing that occurs in people with normal circadian rhythm

OBJECTIVES: Sleep quality is crucial for the health and well-being of older adults, and social support has been consistently shown to be related to sleep quality. However, there is a need for research to understand the mechanisms through which these two factors are linked. The purpose of this review is to synthesize scientific literature on the relationship between social support and sleep quality in older adults.
METHODS: Using an integrative review method, this review was conducted for a period from January 2012 to November 2022 using a combination of keywords related to social support and

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent, but its rates of diagnosis and treatment are low. As a heterogeneous condition, it is associated with delayed diagnosis and/or suboptimal treatment. We aimed to determine distinct SDB clusters and examine their association with medical care-seeking behaviour and sleep habits in a community-dwelling population in South China. Participants were enrolled in the 'Guangdong Sleep Health Study'. Five distinct community sites were investigated. Participant information was collected, and overnight sleep monitoring was performed. UNLABELLED: Functional neurological disorders are characterized by neurologic symptoms not consistent with a primary neurologic pathology. Although neurological disorders are commonly associated with poor sleep, alpha intrusion of slow-wave sleep is not described in cases of functional neurological disorder. We describe a case demonstrating an alpha-delta sleep pattern in a patient presenting with a functional neurological disorder and no perception of sleep. Although alpha-delta sleep is more commonly associated with fibromyalgia, this pattern may be a potential biomarker for the physiology o

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Fatal insomnia (FI) is a rare prion disease severely affecting sleep architecture. Breathing during sleep has not been systematically assessed. Our aim was to characterize the sleep architecture, respiratory patterns, and neuropathologic findings in FI.
METHODS: Eleven consecutive FI patients (ten familial, one sporadic) were examined with video-polysomnography (vPSG) between 2002 and 2017. Wake/sleep stages and respiration were evaluated using a modified scoring system. Postmortem neuropathology was assessed in seven patients.
RESULTS: Median age at onset was 48 years and

The present review aimed to 1) identify what sleep disturbances co-occur alongside psychotic-like, dissociative and hypomanic experiences; 2) assess the strength of potential associations between the severity of sleep disturbances and of the experiences studied; and 3) appraise evidence for a causal link. MedLine and PsycInfo were searched and 44 studies were deemed eligible. Results showed that insomnia was associated with all individual psychotic-like, dissociative and hypomanic experiences reviewed (effect size range: small-to-large). Parasomnias were associated with all psychotic-like expe

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder in the geriatric population, affecting 30-48% of communitydwelling older adults and higher proportions in residential care settings. Its management is complicated by age-related pharmacokinetic changes, polypharmacy, and disproportionate risks associated with traditionally prescribed hypnotic agents. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesise contemporary evidence to address two key clinical questions: (1) what pharmacological agents are effective and safe for treating insomnia in older adults; and (2) what non-pharmacologica

This chapter provides an exhaustive review of the neural substrates associated with insomnia and hyperarousal, considering the chronic disturbance of sleep from the complex perspective of a reciprocal biopsychosocial model. It focuses on several critical abnormalities observed on the structure and function of neuroanatomy, especially the hypersensitive reaction of the amygdala and insular cortex along with reduced reactivity of the prefrontal cortex that results in the development of emotional dysregulation and a continuous feeling of danger. At the circuitry level, it is possible to observe a
