SIGNIFICANCE: The slit lamp is the gold standard ophthalmic instrument for examining the anterior segment of the eye. Slit lamps require the mechanical stabilization of patients to facilitate alignment and a specialized technician to operate. The growing demand for ophthalmic care and shortages of specialists highlight the need for alternative diagnostic technologies.
AIM: We demonstrate an autonomously aligning, contactless slit lamp enabled by a vision-guided robot to acquire anterior segment images without mechanical patient stabilization.
APPROACH: We integrate three subsystems mounted t

Meibomian glands (MGs) secrete lipids (meibum) into the tear film and prevent excessive evaporation. MG dysfunction (MGD) is a major cause of evaporative dry eye. Recent studies have demonstrated that evaporative dry eye resulting from MGD is far more common than aqueous-deficient dry eye is. Meibography is the only technique that can be used to observe the structure of MGs in silhouette, by illuminating the eyelids from the skin side, and can detect the morphological abnormalities in MGs. However, conventional meibography uses a transilluminating light probe directly applied onto the eyelid a

PURPOSE: Infectious keratitis (IK) remains one of the leading causes of corneal blindness worldwide, and subtype distinguishing continues to pose significant clinical challenges. Existing deep learning (DL) approaches typically rely on a single imaging modality, which overlooks the distinct diagnostic cues present in other modalities.
METHODS: To address this limitation, we propose KeraFusionNet, a novel DL framework that simultaneously processes three imaging modalities: diffuse white light, slit beam, and cobalt blue light with fluorescein staining. The model integrates three modality-speci

Corneal ulcer is the most common symptom of corneal disease, which is one of the main causes of corneal blindness. The accurate classification of corneal ulcer has important clinical importance for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. To achieve this, we propose a deep learning method based on multi-scale information fusion and label smoothing strategy. Firstly, the proposed method utilizes the densely connected network (DenseNet121) as backbone for feature extraction. Secondly, to fully integrate the shallow local information and the deep global information and improve the classificati

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the cytokine receptor-like factor 1 (CRLF1) gene are responsible for Crisponi/Cold-induced Sweat Syndrome, an extremely rare autosomal-recessive multisystem disorder. The protein encoded is a soluble cytokine receptor, involved in the ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor (CNTFR) pathway. The ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) promotes corneal wound healing and patients with Crisponi/CISS1 syndrome suffer from recurrent keratitis. The aim of the study was to report and discuss the corneal alterations in Crisponi/CISS1 rare disease.

OBJECTIVE: A major challenge in teaching slit-lamp biomicroscopy is providing adequate depth perception and anatomical detail; the Deep Reality Viewer (DRV) addresses this by enabling stereopsis. This study evaluated the utility of DRV for slit-lamp examination (SLE) teaching and compared it with 2-dimensional monitors.
METHODS: In this single-centre prospective comparative study, 33 medical learners completed a qualitative assessment comparing DRV versus 2-dimensional (2D) monitors for SLE of the anterior segment and optic nerve head (ONH). Perceived educational value and task-specific utili

INTRODUCTION: Simulation-based training is increasingly used in medical education to improve clinical skills. The Eyesi slit lamp simulator offers a platform for training in slit lamp examination and indirect ophthalmoscopy. However, training needs to be evidence-based to ensure reliable evaluation. Therefore, this study aims to identify relevant training modules on the Eyesi slit lamp simulator for ophthalmology residents through a national Delphi study to develop a training curriculum.
METHODS: A two-round Delphi study was conducted with chief physicians, consultants, and professors involve

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a promising new technology that has the potential of diagnosing allergic conjunctival diseases (ACDs). However, its development is slowed by the absence of a tailored image database and explainable AI models. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop an explainable AI model that can not only diagnose ACDs but also present the basis for the diagnosis.
METHODS: A dataset of 4942 slit-lamp images from 10 ophthalmological institutions across Japan were used as the image database. A sequential pipeline of segmentation AI was constructed to identify

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The use of slit lamp shields has been recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology as an infection control measure during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. However, there is limited evidence regarding its efficacy to reduce viral transmission risks. We aim to provide an evidence-based approach to optimize the use of slit lamp shields during clinical examination.
RECENT FINDINGS: Respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing can travel up to 50 m/s and over a distance of 2 m, with a potential area of spread of 616 cm. Slit lamp shields confer added protection
