The impact of diver-induced stress on the ventilation patterns of Mediterranean seahorses: A field-based approach.

Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.) are among the most popular marine species for wildlife tourism, being highly sought by divers and underwater photographers. Due to their unique morphology and behaviour, seahorses are particularly vulnerable to the visual and acoustic disturbances caused by underwater photographers, who often use flash photography to compensate for the seahorses' cryptic appearance. The present study utilises Opercular Beat Rate (OBR) as a non-invasive method to evaluate the stress induced by underwater tourism activities on Mediterranean seahorses, specifically the long-snouted Hi

Reproductive toxicity and molecular mechanisms of benzo[a]pyrene exposure on ovary, testis, and brood pouch of sex-role-reversed seahorses (Hippocampus erectus).

As a flagship taxa for marine ecosystems, seahorses possess a unique reproductive strategy of "male pregnancy". They are severely threatened by marine petroleum-based pollution but the molecular mechanism involved remains unclear. We evaluated the toxic effects and mechanisms of sub-acute exposure to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), at three environmental related dosages (0.5, 5, and 50 μg/L) on the reproductive organs of sex-role-reversed lined seahorses (Hippocampus erectus). BaP induced ovary, testis and brood pouch tissue damage in a concentrati

Phylogenetic analysis of Ellipsomyxa species (Myxosporea) and description of Ellipsomyxa gordeyi n. sp. from the gall bladder of mullets (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) in Nha Trang Bay of the East Sea, Vietnam.

The coastal waters of Vietnam are home to a wide diversity of fishes, but the parasite diversity of these potential hosts is much less well characterized. To begin addressing this knowledge gap, we carried out surveys of myxozoan parasites in fishes collected from Nha Trang Bay in Vietnam's East Sea in 2018-2019. Mugilid fishes were collected in March-April 2018, January-February 2019, and November-December 2019, and examined for myxozoans. Myxospores consistent with those of the genus Ellipsomyxa were found in the gall bladder of four mullet species, and we thoroughly characterized those from

Mullus barbatus L. and Mullus surmuletus L. from western Mediterranean waters (SE Spain) are infected by Hysterothylacium fabri, but not by zoonotic nematodes. Possible impact on fish hosts.

In order to know whether there is a risk of anisakiasis (or anisakidosis) by consumption of fish of the genus Mullus from the western Mediterranean Sea, which are appreciated for their quality, an epidemiological survey was carried out to evaluate the occurrence of zoonotic or potentially zoonotic nematodes in M. barbatus and M. surmuletus. Although the presence of the third larval stage (L3) of anisakids (Anisakis and Contracaecum) has been previously described in these fish, the results showed the absence of anisakids and the presence, never in muscle, of L3 and L4 of raphidascaridids of the

Seahorse Male Pregnancy as a Model System to Study Pregnancy, Immune Adaptations, and Environmental Effects.

Seahorses, together with sea dragons and pipefishes, belong to the Syngnathidae family of teleost fishes. Seahorses and other Syngnathidae species have a very peculiar feature: male pregnancy. Among different species, there is a gradation of paternal involvement in carrying for the offspring, from a simple attachment of the eggs to the skin surface, through various degrees of egg coverage by skin flaps, to the internal pregnancy within a brood pouch, which resembles mammalian uterus with the placenta. Because of the gradation of parental involvement and similarities to mammalian pregnancy, sea

The cutaneous stress response system in three-spined stickleback and European flounder exposed to oxidative stress: Different mode of action.

In fish, the skin is directly exposed to multiple environmental stressors and provides the first line of defense against harmful external factors. It turned out that cortisol and melatonin (Mel) are involved in fish cutaneous stress response system (CSRS) similar to mammalian. This study investigates the mode of action of CSRS in two teleost species of different biology and skin characteristics, the three-spined stickleback and the European flounder, after exposure to oxidative stress induced by a potassium dichromate solution. The cutaneous stress response system presents different ways of ac

Regulatory mechanism of LncRNAs in gonadal differentiation of hermaphroditic fish, Monopterus albus.

BACKGROUND: Monopterus albus is a hermaphroditic fish with sex reversal from ovaries to testes via the ovotestes in the process of gonadal development, but the molecular mechanism of the sex reversal was unknown. METHODS: We produced transcriptomes containing mRNAs and lncRNAs in the crucial stages of the gonad, including the ovary, ovotestis and testis. The expression of the crucial lncRNAs and their target genes was detected using qRT‒PCR and in situ hybridization. The methylation level and activity of the lncRNA promoter were analysed by applying bisulfite sequencing PCR and dual-luciferas

Stickleback mass occurrence driven by spatially uneven parasite pressure? Insights into infection dynamics, host mortality, and epizootic variability.

Since 2012, a massive invasion of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) has taken place into the pelagic area of Lake Constance. This species, which had previously been restricted to the littoral zone, is now the dominant pelagic fish and the previously dominant whitefish (Coregonus wartmanni) has suffered severe reductions in growth and recruitment. In this study, in total, 2871 sticklebacks were collected via monthly sessions over a 4-year period in pelagic and benthic areas of Lake Constance and examined for signs of infection with Schistocephalus solidus, a parasite known t

No strong associations between temperature and the host-parasite interaction in wild stickleback.

As climate change progresses, thermal stress is expected to alter the way that host organisms respond to infections by pathogens and parasites, with consequences for the fitness and therefore population processes of both host and parasite. The authors used a correlational natural experiment to examine how temperature differences shape the impact of the cestode parasite Schistocephalus solidus on its host, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Previous laboratory work has found that high temperatures benefit S. solidus while being detrimental to the stickleback. The present stu

Circular RNA expression profiles and CircSnd1-miR-135b/c-foxl2 axis analysis in gonadal differentiation of protogynous hermaphroditic ricefield eel Monopterus albus.

BACKGROUND: The expression and biological functions of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in reproductive organs have been extensively reported. However, it is still unclear whether circRNAs are involved in sex change. To this end, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed in gonads at 5 sexual stages (ovary, early intersexual stage gonad, middle intersexual stage gonad, late intersexual stage gonad, and testis) of ricefield eel, and the expression profiles and potential functions of circRNAs were studied. RESULTS: Seven hundred twenty-one circRNAs were identified, and the expression levels of 10 circRNAs

Effects of chronic exposure to environmental levels of tributyltin on the lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) liver: Analysis of bioaccumulation, antioxidant defense, and immune gene expression.

Tributyltin (TBT), an organotin compound frequently detected in the coastal environments, poses a threat to aquatic organisms. The lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) is a vulnerable species found in nearshore water habitats. The mechanisms by which this fish responds to TBT exposure are not yet fully understood. Histological, biochemical, and transcriptional analyses were conducted, and the results showed that 60 days of exposure to 50 and 500 ng/L TBT caused significant tin accumulation and liver damage to seahorses. Antioxidant defenses and immune responses to TBT exposure in the livers of

Bioaccumulation and reproductive toxicity of bisphenol A in male-pregnant seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) at environmentally relevant concentrations.

Seahorses, with brood pouch in adult males, are a bioindicator species that exhibit specialized reproductive strategy of "male pregnancy". Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the most pervasive endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), is hazardous for reproductive, immune, and neurological systems. However, no evidence of BPA toxicity to the male-pregnant animals is available. Herein, the reproductive toxicity of BPA was evaluated in lined seahorses (Hippocampus erectus) following exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations (10, 100, and 1000 μg/L) through physiological, histological, and transcri

Restoration of the genus Parasaccocoelium Zhukov, 1971 (Digenea: Haploporidae) and a description of two new species from mugilid fish in the Far East of Russia.

New data relating to the fauna of Haploporidae (Digenea) in mugilid fish from Primorsky Region of the south of the Russian Far East are presented. In the most recent revision of the family Haploporidae Nicoll, 1914, Parasaccocoelium Zhukov, 1971 was synonymized with Pseudohapladena Yamaguti, 1952 (Overstreet & Curran, 2005). Here, we restore the genus Parasaccocoelium. The species described by Zhukov can be distinguished from the species Pseudohapladena sensu Yamaguti, 1952 using a combination of the following features: (1) diffuse or absent eye-spot pigment; (2) subterminal or terminal oral s

Occurrence of the parasitic copepod Ergasilus labracis on Threespine Sticklebacks from the south coast of Newfoundland.

A study conducted from August to October 2013 surveyed Threespine Sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus (n = 822) for the presence of parasitic copepods in the vicinity of large sea-cage salmonid farms in Bay d'Espoir, Newfoundland. The majority of parasitic copepods surveyed were Ergasilus labracis (n = 4,684). Other parasitic copepods observed on Threespine Sticklebacks during the survey included chalimus-stage Lepeophtheirus spp. (n = 3), adult Argulus alosae (n = 2), and a single Thersitina gasterostei. This represents a new host record for E. labracis. The copepods were present on fish coll

Low-frequency alternating electric field superchilling mitigates ice crystal growth and preserves taste quality in Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus).

This study investigated the effects of low-frequency alternating electric field-assisted superchilling (ESF) on the quality of Asian swamp eels. Compared to conventional superchilling (SF), ESF treatment significantly reduced ice crystal size, decreasing the equivalent diameters and cross-sectional areas by 19.6% and 35.5%, respectively, at day 8, while maintaining more regular crystal morphology. ESF also effectively suppressed the conversion of immobilized water to free water, delayed umami loss, and mitigated bitterness development, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance and electronic

Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics of Infection and Immunity in Experimentally Founded Lake Populations of Threespine Stickleback.

AbstractHost-parasite interactions are likely to involve eco-evolutionary feedbacks. Parasites can impose strong selection on host immune traits. Evolution of these traits can suppress parasite abundance, which alters the strength of selection. Such eco-evo feedbacks can be hard to document in natural settings, where long-term interactions may have converged on relatively stable equilibria. However, when a species disperses into an unoccupied habitat, it can experience altered parasite abundance (e.g., enemy release) or encounter new parasite genotypes. These perturbations may be followed by o

Population-level immunologic variation in wild threespine stickleback (Gasterosteusaculeatus).

Wild organisms are regularly exposed to a wide range of parasites, requiring the management of an effective immune response while avoiding immunopathology. Currently, our knowledge of immunoparasitology primarily derives from controlled laboratory studies, neglecting the genetic and environmental diversity that contribute to immune phenotypes observed in wild populations. To gain insight into the immunologic variability in natural settings, we examined differences in immune gene expression of two Alaskan stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations with varying susceptibility to infection

Molecular mechanisms of Eda-mediated adaptation to freshwater in threespine stickleback.

A main goal of evolutionary biology is to understand the genetic basis of adaptive evolution. Although the genes that underlie some adaptive phenotypes are now known, the molecular pathways and regulatory mechanisms mediating the phenotypic effects of those genes often remain a black box. Unveiling this black box is necessary to fully understand the genetic basis of adaptive phenotypes, and to understand why particular genes might be used during phenotypic evolution. Here, we investigated which genes and regulatory mechanisms are mediating the phenotypic effects of the Eda haplotype, a locus r

Selection on an extreme-yet-conserved larval life-history strategy in a tapeworm.

Evolutionary stasis characterizes many phenotypes, even ones that seem suboptimal. Among tapeworms, Schistocephalus solidus and its relatives have some of the shortest developmental times in their first intermediate hosts, yet their development still seems excessively long considering they can grow faster, larger, and safer in the next hosts in their complex life cycles. I conducted 4 generations of selection on the developmental rate of S. solidus in its copepod first host, pushing a conserved-but-counterintuitive phenotype toward the limit of known tapeworm life-history strategies. Faster pa
