Smell and taste in children with simple obesity.

In 30 children, aged 10-16 years and suffering from simple obesity, significantly lowered odour detection thresholds were noted. The thresholds were lower than the average for a given age group in around 20% of obese children in cases of odours stimulating olfactory nerve and in around 57% in cases of substances stimulating olfactory and trigeminal nerves. Odour identification thresholds were similarly affected, with identification of olfactory nerve plus trigeminal nerve stimulating odours affected more than twice as frequently. In 77% cases also the electrogustometric thresholds were found b

Disturbances of taste and smell induced by drugs.

We reviewed the current literature (1980-1990, 1991-1996) concerning drugs associated with anosmia, hyposmia, dysgeusia, parageusia, and ageusia, and the impact of these adverse effects. Case reports of patients with sudden and delayed onset of one of these disorders with evidence for implication of a drug were included. Disturbances of taste and smell among the elderly and chronically ill, including those with thermal injury, decreases interest in eating and secondarily impairs healing of wounds. Mechanisms involved with these sensory disturbances include deposition of silver sulfate in nerve

[Clinical application of the smell identification test].

Clinical application of the standardized "scratch and sniff" olfactory test in Japanese is described. Over 300 subjects participated in three experiments. In experiment 1, 29 odorants used in the smell identification test were rated as to their experiences. The ratios of the experiences in each combination of odorants were compared. In experiment 2, the test was applied to normal subjects. Average test scores decreased as a function of age, with the greatest decline occurring between the sixth and tenth decades of life. In experiment 3, the test was shown to differentiate between subjects with

Assessment of patients with taste and smell disorders.

The evaluation of patients with taste and smell complaints is difficult without standardized quantitative methods of assessment. This paper summarizes recent developments in the evaluation of chemosensory patients. Evaluation must begin with a careful medical history, since certain questions can help in establishing an etiology. Several recent advances have been made in the development of standardized tests for the assessment of taste and olfactory function. Smell can be evaluated with a combination of butanol threshold and odor identification (University of Connecticut test battery) and with

[Classification and definition of smell and taste disorders].

The smell and taste disorders are defined in terms due to two principles - the type and site of lesion. The quantitative dysosmias (anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia) correspond to the quantitative dysgeusias (ageusia, hypogeusia, hypergeusia) and the qualitative dysosmias (parosmia, pseudo-osmia, phantosmia, agnosmia) correspond to the qualitative dysgeusias (parageusia, pseudogeusia, phantogeusia, agnogeusia). Due to the site of lesion we can differentiate between respiratory, epithelial, combined, neural, and central dysosmias as well as epithelial, neural, and central dysgeusias. Typical examp

Can we smell without an olfactory bulb?

BACKGROUND: Lack of an olfactory bulb (OB) is typically associated with anosmia. METHODS: We present a patient with subnormal olfactory function in whom the OB could not be detected with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). RESULTS: Olfactory function was evaluated on two occasions. Orthonasal olfactory function was assessed with the "Sniffin' Sticks" test providing a score equivalent to hyposmia. Retronasal olfactory function was studied with "smell powders" indicating a decreased, but not absence of, olfactory function. Importantly, chemosensory event-related potentials were clearly present i

Taste and Smell Disturbance Resulting From Midodrine.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of dysgeusia and dysosmia following midodrine initiation. METHODS/CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old male started midodrine 5 mg tablets 3 times a day for orthostatic hypotension. Two weeks after starting, he began complaining of dysgeusia and dysosmia. He also reported less of an appetite at this time but did not realize it was due to symptoms. He reported his symptoms as tolerable and chose to continue the medicine. At follow-up contact 7 days later, the symptoms were still present but diminishing. MAIN RESULTS/DISCUSSION: Midodrine is used for symptoms of orthostatic

[Smell and Taste Dysfunctions owing to COVID-19].

Olfactory and taste dysfunctions are characteristic symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, their frequencies and pathogeneses keep changing because of rapid mutations of the viral strains. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, a receptor for the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 in the olfactory epithelium, is involved in the development of olfactory dysfunction. In general, olfactory dysfunctions resolve in a few weeks. However, there are cases wherein the symptoms persist for several months or longer, and parosmia or phantosmia affects the patient's quality of life. It is also assume

A Case of Fishy Smell-Fish Malodor Syndrome

Abstract Introduction: Primary trimethylaminuria (TMAU), also known as fish malodor syndrome is a rare condition that is characterized by trimethylamine excess. The hallmark of this condition is a body malodor similar to decaying fish. As this metabolic disorder is uncommon, this case highlights the management options for an endocrinologist. Case presentation: A 56-year-old man was referred to the endocrine clinic for TMAU. Starting in puberty, the patient’s family and friends noted a malodor that he has never been able to detect. After several decades, the patient was diagnosed clinically by

Smell, an Underrated Early Biomarker for Brain Aging.

Olfaction is in addition to touch the most ancient of our senses, developing already in the womb it decays progressively from 65 years of age with a more pronounced impairment associated with dementia. Despite its clinical relevance and testing accessibility, smell remains an overlooked biomarker, which is rarely used by neurologists in the early screening phase. In this perspective article, we outline the reasons underlying the lack of awareness for this sense. In an attempt to put olfaction forward as an early biomarker for pathological brain aging, we draw a comparison with vision and heari

The Smell in COVID-19 Infection: Diagnostic Opportunities.

There is a high prevalence of olfaction changes, especially in the early presentation, in COVID-19 patients. The mechanisms through which the virus leads to anosmia/hyposmia is still not fully understood. However, olfaction changes could be used as an indication for testing or quarantine. Screening for infections and other diseases by recognizing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been previously conducted. Hence, if the coronavirus infection also results in VOCs excretion, physicians could "smell" the virus by using electronic noses. We conducted a literature review on olfaction changes an

Assessment of Smell Function in Syndromic Craniosynostosis Patients.

Craniosynostosis is defined as premature fusion of the cranial suture lines and is part of a syndrome in 15% to 40% of the patients. There is limited literature available regarding these children's ability to smell. Most of them will undergo numerous surgical procedures, some of which may alter their sense of smell, potentially leading to significant social as well as safety implications. Ethical approval was obtained for this pilot study. Children with syndromic craniosynostosis were recruited and underwent anterior rhinoscopy, prior to performing a smell test utilizing the Sensonic pediatric

Taste and smell dysfunction in childhood cancer survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Reduced or altered taste and smell function may occur as a side-effect of cancer therapy. This can lead to altered nutrient and energy intake. Some studies have suggested that taste and smell dysfunction can persist many years after treatment completion but this has not been previously assessed in survivors of childhood cancer. The aim of this study is to determine if taste and smell dysfunction is present in childhood cancer survivors (CCS). Food preference and Quality of Life was also assessed. METHODS: Fifty-one child cancer survivors (mean age: 19.69±7.09years), more than fi

Humans without a sense of smell breathe differently.

Olfaction may play a restricted role in human behavior, yet paradoxically, its absence in anosmia is associated with diverse deleterious outcomes, culminating in reduced life expectancy. The mammalian nose serves two purposes: olfaction and breathing. Because respiratory patterns are impacted by odors, we hypothesized that nasal respiratory airflow may be altered in anosmia. We apply a wearable device that precisely logs nasal airflow for 24-hour-long sessions in participants with isolated congenital anosmia and controls. We observe significantly altered patterns of respiratory nasal airflow i

Intranasal insulin for COVID-19-related smell loss.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative (hyposmia and anosmia) and qualitative (phantosmia and parosmia) olfactory disorders are common consequences of COVID-19 infection found in more than 38% of patients even months after resolution of acute disease. SARS-CoV-2 has tropism for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the respiratory system, suggesting that it is the mechanism of damage to the olfactory neuroepithelium and of involvement at the central nervous system. The olfactory bulb is the organ with the highest insulin uptake in the central nervous system. Insulin increases the production of Growth Fa
